BACKGROUND COVID-19 increases the risk of acute cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including acute coronary syndrome (ACS), acute pulmonary embolism (APE), and acute myocarditis (AMyo). The actual impact of CVDs on mortality of patients with COVID-19 remains unknown. This study aimed to determine whether CVDs influence the course of COVID-19 pneumonia and if they can be easily detected by using common tests and examinations.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with an increased risk of pulmonary embolism (PE), particularly in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia.
  • A study from two specialized centers found that the prevalence of symptomatic acute PE among these patients was 19.3% and identified a D-dimer/age ratio of 70 as a more effective diagnostic tool than the standard cut-off of 1000 ng/mL.
  • Despite the occurrence of PE, mortality rates between PE and non-PE patients were similar when treated at specialized facilities, with age being the main independent predictor of mortality.
