Background: Simple Sequence Repeats or microsatellites are resourceful molecular genetic markers. There are only few reports of SSR identification and development in pineapple. Complete genome sequence of pineapple available in the public domain can be used to develop numerous novel SSRs.

Gene duplication is an important mechanism for acquiring new genes and creating genetic novelty in organisms. Many new gene functions have evolved through gene duplication and it has contributed tremendously to the evolution of developmental programmes in various organisms. Gene duplication can result from unequal crossing over, retroposition or chromosomal (or genome) duplication.

Proboscis lateralis of nose-a case report.

Lateral proboscis is a rare craniofacial malformation characterized by a rudimentary tubular, nose-like structure located off-center from the vertical midline of the face, and occur in association with a wide spectrum of other anomalies, including heminasal aplasia spectrum,mental retardation, callosal agenesis, heminasal hypoplasia, microphthalmia, and atypical clefting syndrome. Evaluation of a patient should include CT scan examination to look for growth of facial and skull bones. Reconstruction should start at an early age.

Electron donor-acceptor interaction of 3,4-dimethylaniline with 2,3-dicyano-1,4-naphthoquinone.

The electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between 2,3-dicyano-1,4-naphthoquinone (DCNQ) and 3,4-dimethylaniline (3,4-DMA) is studied in chloroform, dichloromethane and 1:1 (v/v) mixture of chloroform and dichloromethane. The rate of formation of the product was measured as a function of time using UV-vis spectrophotometer. The formation constant (K) and molar extinction coefficient (ɛ) values for the formation of EDA complex were evaluated in the temperature range of 20-35°C.

Comparative efficacy of Annona squamosa and Azadirachta indica extracts against Boophilus microplus Izatnagar isolate.

In the search of developing herbal acaricides, eight medicinal plants were screened for their efficacy against Boophilus microplus, the widely distributed tick species in India. Of the seven extracts screened, the extracts prepared from the Annona squamosa seed showed very high level of efficacy (70.8%) after 24 h of treatment.

Sustaining continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis after herniotomy.

Controversy still exists as to whether peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment can be safely continued after herniotomy. Many nephrologists withhold PD treatment for several weeks after herniotomy for fear of dialysate leakage and hernia recurrence. Here, we report on 9 patients (2 women, 7 men) in whom herniotomy was performed for umbilical (n = 3), inguinal (n = 5), or cicatricial hernia (n = 2), or for open processus vaginalis (n = 2).

Free radicals and pathogenesis during ischemia and reperfusion of the cat small intestine.

Background/aim: In spite of the interest in free radicals as mediators of ischemic damage, most information on these species in biological systems is derived from indirect measurements. Our aim was to obtain more direct information concerning sources of free radical production during ischemia and reperfusion.

Methods: We have performed simultaneous measurement of radical generation, purine metabolites, reduced glutathione, neutrophil infiltration and morphological appearance in the cat small intestine in vivo during 60 minutes of ischemia followed by 60 minutes of reperfusion.
