Dopamine neurons (DANs) are extensively studied in the context of associative learning, in both vertebrates and invertebrates. In the acquisition of male and female olfactory memory, the PAM cluster of DANs provides the reward signal, and the PPL1 cluster of DANs sends the punishment signal to the Kenyon cells (KCs) of mushroom bodies, the center for memory formation. However, thermo-genetical activation of the PPL1 DANs after memory acquisition impaired aversive memory, and that of the PAM DANs impaired appetitive memory.

A simple methylenedioxy dibromoindole alkaloid, amakusamine (), was isolated from a marine sponge of the genus , and its structure was determined from spectroscopic data, time-dependent density-functional theory calculations, and synthesis. Compound inhibited the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced formation of multinuclear osteoclasts with an IC value of 10.5 μM in RAW264 cells.

Aim: To determine the usefulness of assigning narrow-band imaging (NBI) scores for predicting tumor grade and invasion depth in colorectal tumors.

Methods: A total of 161 colorectal lesions were analyzed from 138 patients who underwent endoscopic or surgical resection after conventional colonoscopy and magnifying endoscopy with NBI. The relationships between the surface and vascular patterns of the lesions, as visualized with NBI, and the tumor grade and depth of submucosa (SM) invasion were determined histopathologically.

Serrated lesions, including hyperplastic polyps (HPs), traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs) and sessile serrated adenomas/polyps (SSA/Ps), are important contributors to colorectal carcinogenesis. The aim of the present study was to analyze the potential of conventional endoscopy and advanced endoscopic imaging techniques to delineate the characteristic features of serrated lesions with cancer. The present study was a retrospective analysis of the data of 168 patients who had undergone colonoscopy, and a total of 228 serrated lesions (77 HPs, 58 TSAs, 84 SSA/Ps, 9 SSA/P plus TSAs) have been identified in these patients.

During olfactory associative learning in Drosophila, odors activate specific subsets of intrinsic mushroom body (MB) neurons. Coincident exposure to either rewards or punishments is thought to activate extrinsic dopaminergic neurons, which modulate synaptic connections between odor-encoding MB neurons and MB output neurons to alter behaviors. Hematopoietic cell transplantation has proven beneficial for various intractable diseases, but it remains unclear how hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) home to the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, initiate hematopoietic reconstitution, and maintain life-long hematopoiesis. The use of newly elucidated molecular determinants for overall HSPC engraftment should benefit patients. Here, we report that modification of C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (Cxcr4) signaling in murine HSPCs does not significantly affect initial homing/lodging events, but leads to alteration in subsequent BM repopulation kinetics, with observations confirmed by both gain- and loss-of-function approaches.

Skeletal muscle wasting is an exacerbating factor in the prognosis of critically ill patients. Using a systemic burn injury model in mice, we have established a role of autophagy in the resulting muscle wasting that is distant from the burn trauma. We provide evidence that burn injury increases the autophagy turnover in the distal skeletal muscle by conventional postmortem tissue analyses and by a novel in vivo microscopic method using an autophagy reporter gene (tandem fluorescent LC3).

Sessile serrated adenoma (SSA) is a proposed precursor of colorectal carcinogenesis. This study aimed to analyze the potential of endoscopy to discriminate SSA from other serrated lesions, specifically traditional serrated adenoma (TSA) and hyperplastic polyp (HP). Of 145 serrated lesions, 111 sessile serrated lesions including 32 TSAs, 25 SSAs and 54 HPs were analyzed for size, color, location and morphologic features using conventional endoscopy and magnifying chromoendoscopy.
