The authors have investigated the influence of cell density on the release of collagen type IV degrading activity by C6 astrocytoma cells in monolayer culture. The case of a patient with a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA), a low-grade glioma of adolescence, is presented. A literature review of 79 patients with PXAs is described and confirms a favorable prognosis in 80% of patients. The sex ratio in the reported cases was almost equal, and the median age at time of diagnosis was 14 years.

Soft tissue sarcomas represent a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal malignancies, and the majority of the previous scientific studies that have analyzed the occurrence of cell cycle regulators aberrations within soft tissue sarcomas have dealt with broad categories of different tumors. Heal and neck squamous cell carcinomas show frequent cytogenetic alterations involving the long arm of chromosome 13. To define the extent of 13q deletions and to identify the minimal areas of chromosome loss, 48 primary squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck were analyzed for loss of heterozygosity using 11 different polymorphic loci. About 67% of the tumors displayed loss of genetic material at 13q.

During neurulation in vertebrate embryos, epithelial cells of the neural plate undergo complex morphogenetic movements that culminate in rolling of the plate into a tube. Resolution of the determinants of this process requires an understanding of the precise movements of cells within the epithelial sheet. Limited information is current available on the molecular and immunophenogenotypic characteristics of CD30-positive anaplastic large cell (ALC) lymphomas occurring in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. To address this issue, the authors have undertaken a combined analysis of these lymphomas in a comparison with other Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated tumors in the setting of HIV infection. Twenty-one AIDS-related lymphomas, including five CD30-positive ALC and 11 small noncleaved cell (SNCC) lymphomas, and five Hodgkin's disease (HD) specimens were characterized regarding the immunophenogenotypic features, the frequency and subtype distribution of EBV (as defined by in situ hybridization [ISH], Southern blot, and a polymerase chain reaction [PCR] amplification of the EBV nuclear antigen-2 [EBNA-2] region) antigen expression (latent membrane protein-1 [LMP-1], EBNA-2, and for alterations of the tumor suppressor gene p53.

In this context, the appearance of a new neoplasm often poses a problem of differential diagnosis between recurrence and new primary tumour. In a patient with a rare subtype of glioma, pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, cytogenetic studies revealed that both homologues of chromosome 1 were involved in translocations at the same band 1q42 but with different partner chromosomes. In addition, 5 glioblastomas out of 25 gliomas karyotyped in our laboratory had lost at least one copy of band 1q42 through deletions, unbalanced rearrangements, or chromosome losses. Twenty-one gliomas that had lost at least one copy of chromosome band 1q42 were identified in the literature; all were astrocytic tumors and the majority were glioblastomas.

Mink cell focus-forming viruses (MCF) are slow-transforming retroviruses that are able to accelerate the appearance of T-cell lymphomas when injected in newborn AKR mice. Activation of proto-oncogenes by proviral insertion is thought to be the major mechanism by which these viruses exert their oncogenic potential. However, molecular phenomena not strictly virus-determined, such as mutations in cellular oncogenes/tumor suppressor genes or chromosome aberrations, have been hypothesized to contribute to the achievement of the fully neoplastic phenotype in MCF-infected mice.

p53 protein overexpression is a frequent finding in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), being detected in over 25% of the cases. Moreover, some high-grade lymphomas and a large fraction of low-grade tumors show a pattern of scattered p53 accumulation in a limited percentage of neoplastic cells. To elucidate the relationship, if any, of p53 gene expression according to smoking and drinking habits, 135 subjects with cancer of the upper aero-digestive tract were sampled from a case-control investigation conducted in Pordenone province, Northeast Italy, between 1986 and 1991. Adequate pathological material for immunohistochemical analysis was available for 83 subjects. Level of p53 expression was classified according to intensity on immunoreaction and percentage of p53-positive cells.

EP has a native molecular mass of 1000 kDa and is composed of three subunits, two isoelectric variants at 70 kDa and one at 65 kDa. Ipsilateral third nerve palsy with early pupillary enlargement is an important sign of transtentorial herniation from a supratentorial mass lesion. A case of frontal, intraparenchymal haemorrhage is reported in which the first ocular manifestation of transtentorial herniation was enlargement of the contralateral pupil. The ipsilateral pupil dilated only after complete oculomotor palsy of the contralateral eye.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is an uncommon neoplasm of the superficial soft tissue occurring in actinically damaged skin of elderly patients. Alteration of the p53 tumor-suppressor gene was studied in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) from HIV-1-infected patients. p53 protein was over-expressed in 10 out of the 45 (22%) cases analyzed, mainly clustering in the small-non-cleaved-cell (SNC) (5/19) and Ki-1+ anaplastic large-cell (ALC) (3/8) sub-types, according to previous findings on HIV-1-unrelated NHLs. p53-positive small-non-cleaved-cell lymphomas presented a diffuse or clustered pattern of p53-positive neoplastic cells consequent upon p53-gene mutations.

The present study was undertaken in order to determine whether the expression of specific surface molecules which mediate immune recognition as well as cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions is associated with the leukemic evolution of T-cell lymphomas. To this end, we have investigated the in vivo phenotypic characteristics and the in vitro natural-killer(NK)-cell susceptibility of a group of MCF-247-induced AKR/J T-cell lymphomas with different leukemic potential. We found that in the AKR/J model, the biological aggressiveness of leukemic cells is not dependent upon an escape from host immune surveillance as a consequence of an in vivo down-regulation of H2-Kk determinants or a resistance to NK lysis.

In a pilot study, two groups of patients with malignant glioma underwent sequential neuropsychological evaluations after successful tumor treatment. Group 1 included nine patients treated from 1981 to 1985; all patients received irradiation and eight underwent chemotherapy. The baseline neuropsychological assessment was performed 1 to 63 months after tumor diagnosis, with follow-up evaluations at irregular intervals over the next 3 to 7 years.

We describe a 5 year old boy with a 5.5 cm right frontal lobe brain metastasis from primary clear cell sarcoma of the kidney without evidence of tumor-associated edema or contrast enhancement on either computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. The metastasis regressed but did not disappear with chemotherapy and dexamethasone, and the residual tumor was removed surgically.
