The risk of intracranial tumors after exposure to ionizing radiation during infancy has been studied in a pooled analysis of two Swedish hemangioma cohorts (n = 28,008). The mean absorbed intracranial dose was low (7 cGy, range 0-11.5 Gy).

Dietary zinc oxide in weaned pigs--effects on performance, tissue concentrations, morphology, neutrophil functions and faecal microflora.

The uptake and distribution of zinc in tissues and the effects of 2500 ppm dietary zinc oxide on health, faecal microflora, and the functions of circulating neutrophils were evaluated in weaned pigs. One group was fed a zinc supplement diet and another group was used as a control. All pigs remained healthy throughout the study, but the supplemented animals showed better performance than the controls.

Influence of artificial light regimens on sexual maturation and boar taint in entire male pigs.

To determine if artificial light regimens could influence sexual maturation and boar-taint factors in entire male pigs, 48 weaned, winter-born crossbred males (52-64 days old) were exposed to either a natural photoperiod (January-June, 60 degrees N, Control, n= 16) or to one of two artificial photoperiods (1400 1x) in light-sealed rooms. We exposed the Spring group to an increasing artificial photoperiod (January - June, 60 degrees N, n=16) and the Autumn group to a decreasing one (July-December, 60 degrees N, n = 16). Plasma samples were collected bi-weekly until the pigs were slaughtered, after reaching 115 kg.

Humoral immune responses to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in sows and offspring following an outbreak of mycoplasmosis.

Previously healthy sows, seropositive to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, developed clinical signs of mycoplasmosis, as well as increasing amounts of antibodies to M. hyopneumoniae during an outbreak of the disease in a herd. During the early phase of the outbreak, young piglets (2 weeks) with maternal antibodies remained healthy while older seronegative piglets (4-7 weeks) developed the disease.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia serotype 2--effects on the interferon-alpha production of porcine leukocytes in vivo and in vitro.

Effects of a bacterial infection on the IFN-alpha production in vivo and in vitro were studied in eight specific pathogen free pigs experimentally infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Clinically, the experimental infection was manifested as a febrile stage which lasted approximately one week and by signs of respiratory disease. The Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) induced IFN-alpha production, assessed in whole blood cultures, was increased for the infected pigs during the febrile stage.

Relationships between selected climatic factors in fattening units and their influence on the development of respiratory diseases in swine.

The correlation between climatic parameters with one another in fattening units and the influence of environmental factors on lung lesions registered at slaughter were studied in 6 integrated herds with continuous production systems. In addition, the influence of environmental parameters on the spread of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (serotypes 2 and 3) and on the productivity was monitored in 2 specialized fattening herds with strict batch production. The outdoor temperature was positively correlated to the indoor temperature, but negatively correlated to the relative humidity and the concentration of carbon dioxide in the stables.

A large deletion disrupts the exon 3 transcription activation domain of the BRCA2 gene in a breast/ovarian cancer family.

We describe the identification of a large deletion in the BRCA2 gene as the disease-causing mutation in a Swedish breast/ovarian cancer family. The 5068-bp deletion encompassed the 3' region of exon 3, including the 3' splice site and most of intron 3, and it resulted on the mRNA level in an inframe exon 3 skipping. The junction site also included an insertion of 4 bp (CCAT).

Signs of infections and reduced immune functions at weaning of conventionally reared and specific pathogen free pigs.

The growth rate and several immune parameters were recorded to monitor the performance, health and immune status of 40 piglets in a conventional farrow to finish herd. In addition, effects of weaning on immune parameters were studied under minimal influence of infections in 20 specific pathogen free (SPF) pigs. The growth rate of the conventionally reared pigs decreased after weaning and after allocation of pigs to new premises.

The spread of porcine sarcoptic mange during the fattening period revealed by development of antibodies to Sarcoptes scabiei.

Using an indirect ELISA based on a whole body homogenate of Sarcoptes scabiei var vulpes, the development of serum antibodies to S. scabiei var suis during the fattening period was studied in two herds, purchasing fatteners and performing age segregated production systems. All the pigs in one of the herds were treated with ivermectin on the same day within a week after arrival, while no precautions were made to prevent sarcoptic mange in the other herd.

Outcome of reproduction in women irradiated for skin hemangioma in infancy.

The possible impact of early gonadal irradiation on the results of future pregnancies is unclear. This study is based on the progeny of 17,393 women who were treated with irradiation for skin hemangiomas at the age of 18 months or less. The mean ovarian dose was 6 cGy, and the maximum was 8.

Combined treatment with temporary short-term high dose rate iridium-192 brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy for irradiation of localized prostatic carcinoma.

Purpose: To evaluate the treatment outcome after radical radiotherapy of localized prostate cancer in 50 patients (38 patients with stage T1-2 and 12 patients with stage T3) after a median follow-up time of 45 months (range 18-92 months).

Methods: The treatment was given by combination of external beam radiotherapy (50 Gy) and brachytherapy (2 x 10 Gy). The brachytherapy was given using TRUS-guided percutaneously inserted temporary needles with a high dose rate remote afterloading technique with Ir-192 as the radionuclide source.

Metabolic fingerprinting and fermentative capacity of the intestinal flora of pigs during pre- and post-weaning periods.

We used the Phene Plate generalized microplates to investigate the metabolic activities of faecal flora of pigs during pre- and post-weaning periods. Weekly samples were collected from four sows and their litters (four piglets from each) during 5 months. The metabolic fingerprints obtained from faecal floras of sows and their litters in the first sampling occasion was very similar, suggesting that sows were the initial source of flora for piglets.

Intracranial tumors after radium treatment for skin hemangioma during infancy--a cohort and case-control study.

The risk of developing intracranial tumors was studied in a Swedish cohort of 11,805 infants treated with 226Ra for hemangioma of the skin between 1930 and 1965. The cohort was followed up in the Swedish Cancer Register during the years 1958 through 1992, giving 402,958 person-years at risk. Forty-seven intracranial tumors developed in 46 individuals.

Serodiagnosis of sarcoptic mange in pigs.

A serodiagnostic test (ELISA) for detecting antibodies to Sarcoptes scabiei in the sera of pigs was evaluated. The ELISA results from 221 specific pathogen-free pigs of three different age categories were used to establish a cut-off value for the assay. Background optical density values differed significantly between the three groups, the sows having the highest values.

Tissue chambers--a useful model for in vivo studies of cytokine production in the pig.

An in vivo tissue chamber model was developed to enable studies of local cytokine production and cellular events during inflammatory and immune reactions in the pig. Tissue chambers made of sialistic rubber tubing were surgically implanted in the subcutaneous tissue- and samples of tissue chamber fluid (TCF) and inflammatory cells were collected by aspiration with a syringe. To evaluate the model for local cytokine production, two cytokine inducers, polyribinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (poly I:C) and fixed Aujeszky's disease virus infected PK15 cells (ADV-PK15), were injected into the tissue chambers and samples of TCF were collected 0, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h post injection.

Development of selected faecal microfloras and of phagocytic and killing capacity of neutrophils in young pigs.

Nine healthy piglets, weaned at the age of 35 days and emanating from two litters, were studied from 7 to 63 days of age. The development of their faecal flora was analysed by bacteriological quantification of coliforms, E. coli, enterococci and Clostridium perfringens.

A murine carbonic anhydrase-related protein (CARP) has been expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to near homogeneity. The polypeptide chain consists of 290 amino acid residues and has a calculated molecular mass of 32,950 Da. By introducing two mutations, Arg117 --> His and Glu115 --> Gln, we created a metal-binding center homologous to that in the carbonic anhydrases from the animal kingdom.

Reproductive disorders in 10 domestic male cats.

This study describes 10 tomcats with different reproductive disorders. Two of the cats had abnormal sex chromosomes; one was a tortoiseshell and white Cornish rex, while the other was a brown Burmese. The other eight cats were diagnosed as having testicular hypoplasia, diphallos in combination with unilateral cryptorchidism, a persistent penile frenulum, retrograde ejaculation, temporary oligozoospermia, teratozoospermia, azoospermia and congenital poor libido.

Timing of radiotherapy and chemotherapy following breast-conserving surgery for patients with node-positive breast cancer. International Breast Cancer Study Group.

Purpose: A controversy exists regarding whether it is safe to delay radiation therapy until the completion of chemotherapy following breast-conserving surgery for patients with node-positive breast cancer. Within the context of two concurrent randomized clinical trials we had the opportunity to evaluate outcomes for patients who received breast irradiation after completing different durations of chemotherapy.

Methods And Materials: From July 1986 to April 1993 the International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG) Trial VI randomly assigned 1554 pre/perimenopausal node-positive breast cancer patients to receive cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil (CMF) for either three consecutive courses on months 1-3, or six consecutive courses on months 1-6, both with or without reintroduction CMF.

Oxygen consumption in infants and children during heart catheterization.

Oxygen consumption was measured in infants, children, and adolescents during diagnostic heart catheterizations. A total of 825 measurements of oxygen consumption (VO2) was performed in 504 subjects using a semiopen hood system and a paramagnetic oxygen analyzer. In 256 subjects under 3 years of age, body dimensions and heart rate were found to be significant factors for oxygen consumption.

Xenograft rejection of porcine islet-like cell clusters in normal and natural killer cell-depleted mice.

Fetal porcine islet-like cell clusters (ICC) were transplanted under the renal capsule of normoglycemic normal or athymic (nu/nu) C57BL/6 mice. Control animals were implanted with allogeneic minced kidney tissue from C57BL/Ks mice. The animals were killed 6 or 14 days after transplantation and the grafts were processed for flow cytometric analyses or immunohistochemistry.
