Background: Food biodiversity in human diets has potential co-benefits for both public health and sustainable food systems. However, current evidence on the potential relationship between food biodiversity and cancer risk, and particularly gastrointestinal cancers typically related to diet, remains limited. This study evaluated how dietary species richness (DSR) was associated with gastrointestinal cancer risk in a pan-European population.

Prevalence of movement asymmetries in high-performing riding horses perceived as free from lameness and riders' perception of horse sidedness.

A high proportion of horses in training, perceived as free from lameness by their owner, exhibit vertical movement asymmetries. These types of asymmetries are sensitive measures of lameness, but their specificity as indicators of orthopaedic pathology or locomotor function remains unclear. Equine athletes performing at a high level could be assumed to exhibit a higher degree of movement symmetry compared with the general horse population, but this has not been confirmed.

Muscle sympathetic nerve responses to sudden sensory stimuli have been elucidated in several studies on young healthy men, showing reproducible interindividual differences ranging from varying degrees of inhibition to no significant change, with very few subjects showing significant excitation. These individual response patterns have been shown to predict the neural response to mental stress and coupled blood pressure responses. The aim of this study was to investigate whether premenopausal healthy women show similar neural and blood pressure responses.

Here, we study the Koa'e fault system (KFS), located south of the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano in Hawai'i, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, prone to active faulting, episodic dike intrusions, and flank instability. Two rift zones and the KFS are major structures controlling volcanic flank instability and magma propagation.

Background: Deep sternal wound/mediastinitis is a rare but feared complication in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients and seems to increase the risk of cardiac death, and is also associated with the risk of early internal mammary artery (IMA) graft obstruction. The pathological mechanism explaining the link between mediastinitis and IMA graft obstruction and the impact on mortality is complex, multifactorial, and not fully investigated.

Objectives: Mediastinitis has been associated with increased concentrations of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and troponin T (TnT) at mid-term follow-up, representing persistent low-grade myocardial injury and impaired cardiac function.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is practiced worldwide. This practice in English is guided through a small collection of training manuals. Despite ubiquitous practice and formal training materials, little is known about what topics are covered and in what depth in these influential manuals.

Perceived sidedness and correlation to vertical movement asymmetries in young warmblood horses.

The prevalence of vertical asymmetries is high in "owner-sound" warmblood riding horses, however the origin of these asymmetries is unknown. This study investigated correlations between vertical asymmetries and motor laterality. Young warmblood riding horses (N = 65), perceived as free from lameness were evaluated on three visits, each comprising objective gait analysis (inertial measurement units system) and a rider questionnaire on perceived sidedness of the horse.

Introduction: The substantial compression of the dural sac and the subsequent cranial shift of cerebrospinal fluid caused by a high-volume caudal block has been shown to significantly but transiently reduce cerebral blood flow. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this reduction in cerebral perfusion is significant enough to alter brain function, as assessed by electroencephalography (EEG).

Serum nerve growth factor in horses with osteoarthritis-associated lameness.

Background: Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophin that is increased in osteoarthritic joints of horses. In humans, NGF has been associated with pain, and both synovial and serum NGF concentrations are increased in osteoarthritic patients. Studies in humans also have shown that serum NGF concentration can increase with stress.

Investing in a nest egg: intraspecific variation in the timing of egg laying across a latitudinal gradient.

Avian reproductive strategies vary widely, and many studies of life-history variation have focused on the incubation and hatching stages of nesting. Birds make proximate decisions regarding reproductive investment during the laying stage, and these decisions likely constrain and tradeoff with other traits and subsequent behaviors. However, we know relatively little about egg-laying stage behaviors given the difficulty of locating and monitoring nest sites from the onset of laying.

Prevalence of vertical movement asymmetries at trot in Standardbred and Swedish Warmblood foals.

Many horses, just before and during their athletic career, show vertical movement asymmetries, to the same degree as clinically lame horses. It is unknown whether these asymmetries are caused by pain or have alternative explanations, such as inherent biological variation. In the latter case, movement asymmetries would be expected to be present at a very young age.

Increased levels of NT-proBNP and troponin T 2 years after coronary artery bypass grafting complicated by mediastinitis.

Background: Mediastinitis after coronary bypass grafting (CABG) increases the risk of the internal mammary artery (IMA) graft obstruction, and has a detrimental effect on long-term survival. The pathogenesis for this increased mortality is poorly understood. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between mediastinitis and persistently elevated cardiac-specific biomarkers [troponin T (TnT) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP)] and C-reactive protein (CRP) at mid-term follow-up following CABG.

Diversity and training delivery trends in psychological first aid during COVID-19: Implications for researchers and practitioners.

Objective: Psychological first aid (PFA) refers to evidence-supported intervention by nonmental health professionals to assist those affected by disaster to achieve stability. This study probed the level of PFA academic discourse on three important topics (race/ethnicity, general training and delivery, and online training delivery) and explored PFA training delivery trends.

Method: This study reviewed all available abstracts in the Web of Science database from 1975 to 2021 with keyword searches for PFA.

Application-specific approaches to MicroCT for evaluation of mouse models of pulmonary disease.

The advent of micro-computed tomography (microCT) has provided significant advancement in our ability to generate clinically relevant assessments of lung health and disease in small animal models. As microCT use to generate outcomes analysis in pulmonary preclinical models has increased there have been substantial improvements in image quality and resolution, and data analysis software. However, there are limited published methods for standardized imaging and automated analysis available for investigators.

Epidemiology of hamstring injuries in 538 cases from an FC Barcelona multi sports club.

Objectives: Hamstring injuries are the most common muscle injuries in team sports. The aims of this study were to describe the epidemiology of hamstring muscle injuries in the professional and amateur sport sections of a multi-sport club Football Club Barcelona (FCB) and to determine any potential correlation between return-to-play (RTP) and injury location, severity of connective tissue damage, age, sex, and athlete's level of competition.

Methods: This descriptive epidemiological study with data collected from September 2007 to September 2017 stored in the FCB database.
