In termites, the soldier caste, with its specialized defensive morphology, is one of the most important characteristics for sociality. Most of the basal termite species have both male and female soldiers, and the soldier sex ratio is almost equal or only slightly biased. However, in the apical lineages (especially family Termitidae), there are many species that have soldiers with strongly biased sex ratio.

Sedation in patients during gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy involves the risk of respiratory depression. Ventilation support with a conventional face mask without removing an endoscope is impossible. We devised a ventilation mask with a slit and membranous valve on the left side wall and the circular upper end enabling to pass the trunk of an endoscope in situ, based on an idea published in the Japanese Journal of Anesthesia "Masui" 2013; 62: 105-8.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create an affordable typing method for the HLA-A*31:01 marker, linked to increased risk of severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome from carbamazepine.
  • DNA from Japanese patients with these reactions was analyzed to develop the testing method.
  • The results indicated a strong association between HLA-A*31:01 and the risk of these reactions, showing that SNP genotyping is quicker and cheaper than traditional methods and can help identify at-risk patients.

Objective: In patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), a randomized controlled trial revealed that outcomes did not significantly improve after therapeutic hypothermia (TH) or normothermia (TN). However, avoiding pyrexia, which is often associated with intracranial disorders, might improve clinical outcomes. The objective of this study was to compare neurological outcomes among patients with moderate and severe TBI after therapeutic temperature modulation (TTM) in the absence of other interventions.

Background: Circulating lipid metabolites are associated with many physiological and biological processes in the body, and therefore could be used as biomarkers for evaluating drug efficacy and safety in preclinical studies. However, differences in circulating lipid profiles among humans and animals often used in preclinical studies have not been fully investigated.

Methods: We performed lipidomic analysis to obtain circulating lipid profiles of fasted humans (Caucasian, n = 15) and three animal species used in preclinical studies (mice [BALB/c, n = 5], rats [Sprague-Dawley, n = 5], and rabbits [New Zealand White, n = 5]) by using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a major health problem since it often leads to hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the underlying mechanisms of NASH development and subsequent fibrosis have yet to be clarified. We compared comprehensive lipidomic profiles between mice with high fat diet (HFD)-induced steatosis and STAM mice with NASH and subsequent fibrosis.

Purpose: Many studies have identified risk factors for dental implant failure, although few have investigated the correlation among implant fixtures within single patients. A better analytical method may include repeated measures analysis including generalized estimating equations (GEE). This retrospective cohort study aimed to (1) identify the risk factors for failure of dental implantation and (2) evaluate an analytical method using GEE analysis.

Background: Since school urinalysis screening was introduced in 1974, the number of cases requiring initiation of dialysis due to glomerulonephritis has been steadily decreasing and school urinalysis screening has been praised for contributing to the early detection and treatment of glomerulonephritis. However, the lack of nationwide epidemiological surveys is also a problem.

Methods: We conducted an epidemiological survey focusing on the frequency of occurrence of pediatric IgA nephropathy in Nishinomiya City.

X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) is a progressive, hereditary nephropathy. Although men with XLAS usually develop end-stage renal disease before 30 years of age, some men show a milder phenotype and develop end-stage renal disease later in life. However, the molecular mechanisms associated with this milder phenotype have not been fully identified.

Termite castes are a key example of polyphenism, in which reproductive division of labour is clearly seen in colonies. The reproductive castes in termites include primary and neotenic reproductives; primary reproductives found a new colony whereas neotenics succeed them in the reproductive role when the primary reproductives die or become senescent. Neotenics usually differentiate from nymphs or workers by developing functional gonads while retaining juvenile characteristics; however, the developmental mechanism during neotenic differentiation remains poorly understood.

While the gut microbiota of termites and its role in symbiotic digestion have been studied for decades, little is known about the bacteria colonizing the intestinal tract of the distantly related wood-feeding cockroaches (Blaberidae: Panesthiinae). Here, we show that physicochemical gut conditions and microbial fermentation products in the gut of Panesthia angustipennis resemble that of other cockroaches. Microsensor measurements confirmed that all gut compartments were anoxic at the center and had a slightly acidic to neutral pH and a negative redox potential.

Patients referred for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are older and more likely to have extensive vascular diseases than those referred for such procedures in the past. Undiagnosed cerebral small vessel diseases (SVD), such as lacunar infarctions or white matter lesions, and dementia are common. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remains a major concern in these elderly patients.
