Weight loss maintenance in severely obese adults after an intensive lifestyle intervention: 2- to 4-year follow-up.

Objective: To evaluate the long-term weight loss maintenance after 2 to 4 years in severely obese subjects after a lifestyle intervention at a weight loss camp in Denmark.

Research Methods And Procedures: In a retrospective follow-up study, we assessed weight loss after 21 weeks of treatment at a weight loss camp, weight loss maintenance after 2 to 4 years, and numbers of subjects with a weight loss maintenance of > or = 10% of a total number of 435 severely obese adults participating in an intensive lifestyle intervention with a primary focus on physical activity.

Results: We obtained follow-up data of 249 subjects (180 women and 69 men) with an initial body weight of 142 +/- 32 kg.

Purpose Of Review: Reports of the neurologic findings in adults with acquired copper deficiency as well as the development of novel models for Menkes disease have permitted a greater understanding of the role of copper in the central nervous system. A role of mitochondrial copper homeostasis in cellular energy metabolism suggests roles for this metal in cellular differentiation and biochemical adaptation.

Recent Findings: Acquired copper deficiency in adults is reported with increasing frequency, often without any identifiable cause.

The impact on post-surgical treatment of sentinel lymph node biopsy of internal mammary lymph nodes in patients with breast cancer.

Background: Since the introduction of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in breast cancer patients there is a renewed interest in lymphatic drainage to the internal mammary (IM) chain nodes. We evaluated the frequency of lymphatic drainage to the IM chain, the rate of SLNs that contain metastases and the clinical implications of IM LN metastases.

Methods: Between June 1999 and April 2005 506 consecutive patients underwent SLN biopsy as a staging procedure for clinically T1-2N0 breast cancer.

Normal and shear strain estimation using beam steering on linear-array transducers.

In current ultrasound elastography, only the axial component of the displacement vector is estimated and used to produce strain images. A method was recently proposed by our group to estimate both the axial and lateral components of a displacement vector following a uniaxial compression. Previous work evaluated the technique using both simulations and a mechanically translated phased array transducer.

Acute coronary artery thrombosis and a giant coronary artery aneurysm: an atypical combination and an unconventional catheter-based intervention.

Coronary artery aneurysm is an unusual finding at coronary arteriography. We present a case of acute myocardial infarction and a giant aneurysm of the left circumflex coronary artery (CX) in a 70-year-old male with hypertension. The culprit lesion was a thrombus occupying the aneurysm and the distal CX.

Anthropomorphic breast phantoms for testing elastography systems.

Two equivalent anthropomorphic breast phantoms were constructed, one for use in ultrasound elastography and the other in magnetic resonance (MR) elastography. A complete description of the manufacturing methods is provided. The materials used were oil-in-gelatin dispersions, where the volume percent oil differentiates the materials, primarily according to Young's moduli.

Anthropomorphic breast phantoms for qualification of Investigators for ACRIN Protocol 6666.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate various ultrasonic properties of breast phantoms developed for use in qualifying investigators for participation in the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) protocol 6666, "Screening Breast Ultrasound in High-Risk Women." Specifically, a tool was sought to consistently measure the performance of radiology personnel in detecting and characterizing lesions similar to those expected with screening breast ultrasonography (US). The phantoms are equivalent to one another except for the randomization of positions of 14 of the 17 simulated lesions.

Lesion detection and characterization in a breast US phantom: results of the ACRIN 6666 Investigators.

Purpose: To prospectively evaluate ultrasonographic (US) lesion detection and characterization in a breast phantom by potential investigators in a screening US protocol, American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) 6666.

Materials And Methods: National Cancer Institute Cancer Experimental Therapeutic Protocol review and ACRIN internal institutional review board approved the protocol; potential investigators were informed of the study purpose prior to participation. Six equivalent anthropomorphic phantoms were prepared with 17 masses (2-10 mm in mean diameter) in different locations at different depths.

Stable isotope probing (SIP) is a molecular technique that allows investigators to follow the flow of atoms in isotopically enriched molecules through complex microbial communities into metabolically active microorganisms. Thus, SIP has immense promise for discovering microorganisms responsible for ecologically important biogeochemical reactions in nature. Applications of SIP to biodegradation and bioremediation processes are still in their infancy.

Spherical lesion phantoms for testing the performance of elastography systems.

A set of three cubic one-litre phantoms containing spherical simulated lesions was produced for use in comparing lesion detection performance of different elastography systems. The materials employed are known to be stable in heterogeneous configurations regarding geometry and elastic contrast identical with (storage modulus of lesion material) / (storage modulus of background material), and regarding ultrasound and NMR properties. The materials mimic soft tissues in terms of elastic, ultrasound and NMR properties.

Lower urinary tract symptoms after total and subtotal hysterectomy: results of a randomized controlled trial.

The aim of this Danish multicenter trial was to compare the proportion of women with lower urinary tract symptoms after total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) and subtotal abdominal hysterectomy (SAH) for benign uterine disorders. A total of 319 women were randomized to TAH (n = 158) or SAH (n = 161). Women were followed up for 1 year by strict data collection procedures, including postal questionnaires.

Tissue-mimicking phantom materials for narrowband and ultrawideband microwave applications.

We propose and characterize oil-in-gelatin dispersions that approximate the dispersive dielectric properties of a variety of human soft tissues over the microwave frequency range from 500 MHz to 20 GHz. Different tissues are mimicked by selection of an appropriate concentration of oil. The materials possess long-term stability and can be employed in heterogeneous configurations without change in geometry or dielectric properties due to osmotic effects.

Interlaboratory comparison of ultrasonic backscatter coefficient measurements from 2 to 9 MHz.

Objective: As are the attenuation coefficient and sound speed, the backscatter coefficient is a fundamental ultrasonic property that has been used to characterize many tissues. Unfortunately, there is currently far less standardization for the ultrasonic backscatter measurement than for the other two, as evidenced by a previous American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM)-sponsored interlaboratory comparison of ultrasonic backscatter, attenuation, and speed measurements (J Ultrasound Med 1999; 18:615-631). To explore reasons for these disparities, the AIUM Endowment for Education and Research recently supported this second interlaboratory comparison, which extends the upper limit of the frequency range from 7 to 9 MHz.

Optimization of angular and frequency compounding in ultrasonic attenuation estimations.

Previous reports have shown that the variance in ultrasound attenuation measurements is reduced when spatial and frequency compounding were applied in data acquisition and analysis. This paper investigates factors affecting the efficiency of compound attenuation imaging methods. A theoretical expression is derived that predicts the correlation between attenuation versus frequency slope (beta) estimates as a function of the increment between measurement frequencies (deltaf ) and the angular separation between beam lines (Delta (theta)).
