Elderly patients suffering from chronic cardio-pulmonary diseases commonly experience acute respiratory failure. As in younger patients, a well-known therapeutic approach of noninvasive mechanical ventilation is able to prevent orotracheal intubation in a large number of severe scenarios in elderly patients. In addition, this type of ventilation is frequently applied in elderly patients who refuse intubation for invasive mechanical ventilation.

Amyloidosis may involve the respiratory system with different clinical-radiological-functional patterns which are not always easy to be recognized. Recent literature and our previous proteomic findings prompted us to study the coagulation system in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the pathogenesis of which remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare coagulation factors in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and idiopathic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) patients and healthy controls. Thirty-three IPF patients (23 acute exacerbation and 10 stable IPF patients), 7 NSIP patients, and 44 controls were enrolled.

Omalizumab is a new anti-IgE treatment for severe-persistent allergic asthma. In this case presentation, we report the clinical features of a patient with Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) diagnosed after five months of omalizumab treatment. Administration of anti-IgE quickly improved asthma symptoms and enabled the gradual reduction and suspension of systemic steroids.
