Evaluation of salivary biomarker interleukin-6 in oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders - A comparative cross-sectional South Indian study.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for nearly 90% of oral malignancies and represents a major global health care problem. It is often preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). Although regular clinical examination forms the backbone for oral cancer screening, subtle lesions go unnoticed and there is a need for more sensitive and specific molecular biomarkers in mass screening of population.

SARS-CoV-2 infections before, during, and after the Omicron wave: a 2-year Indian community cohort study.

Background: We measured the incidence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections and re-infections in an adult community-based cohort in southern India.

Methods: We conducted a 2-year follow-up on 1229 participants enrolled between May and October 2021. Participants provided vaccination histories, weekly saliva samples, and blood samples at 0, 6, 12, and 24 months.

Deep Learning and fMRI-Based Pipeline for Optimization of Deep Brain Stimulation During Parkinson's Disease Treatment: Toward Rapid Semi-Automated Stimulation Optimization.

Objective: Optimized deep brain stimulation (DBS) is fast becoming a therapy of choice for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the post-operative optimization (aimed at maximizing patient clinical benefits and minimizing adverse effects) of all possible DBS parameter settings using the standard-of-care clinical protocol requires numerous clinical visits, which substantially increases the time to optimization per patient (TPP), patient cost burden and limit the number of patients who can undergo DBS treatment. The TPP is further elongated in electrodes with stimulation directionality or in diseases with latency in clinical feedback.

The quality of caregiver-child interaction is predicted by (caregivers' perception of) their child's interests.

This current study examines the extent to which children's interests and caregivers' sensitivity to their children's interests are associated with the quality of caregiver-child interaction, and subsequent learning. Eighty-one caregiver-child dyads (24-30-month old children) completed an online shared book-reading task where caregivers and children read two e-books with pictures and descriptions of objects from different categories-one previously determined to be of low and one of high interest to the child (with one novel word-object mapping introduced in each book). We also obtained separate behavioural indices of children's interests and children's later recognition of newly introduced word-object mappings.

An examination of measures of young children's interest in natural object categories.

Developmental research utilizes various different methodologies and measures to study the cognitive development of young children; however, the reliability and validity of such measures have been a critical issue in all areas of research practices. To address this problem, particularly in the area of research on infants' interests, we examined the convergent validity of previously reported measures of children's interests in natural object categories, as indexed by (1) parents' estimation of their child's interest in the categories, (2) extrinsic (overt choices in a task), (3) intrinsic (looking time toward objects), and (4) physiological (pupil dilation) responses to objects of different categories. Additionally, we also examined the discriminant validity of all the aforementioned measures against the well-established and validated measure of parents' estimations of children's vocabulary knowledge.

Detailed characterisation of immune responses induced by COVID-19 vaccines rolled out in India: COVISHIELD (CS) and COVAXIN® (CO) in a pre-exposed population is only recently being discovered. We addressed this issue in subjects who received their primary series of vaccination between November 2021 and January 2022. Both vaccines are capable of strongly boosting Wuhan Spike-specific neutralising antibody, polyfunctional Th1 cytokine producing CD4+ T-cells and single IFN-γ + CD8+ T-cells.

Fungal Profile in Non-Invasive Fungal Sinusitis Using PCR in Post-Covid Scenario at a Tertiary-Care Centre in India.

Objective: To detect the presence of Mucorales in the sinuses of healthy individuals and non-invasive fungal sinusitis patients.

Materials And Methods: Post FESS specimens with appearance suggestive of fungal ball or allergic mucin from 30 immunocompetent patients was sent for KOH smear, HPE, fungal culture and PCR.

Results: Fungal culture was positive for Aspergillus flavus in one specimen.

Investigation of liver-targeted peripheral focused ultrasound stimulation (pFUS) and its effect on glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a proof of concept, phase 1 trial.

Background: Mechanical waves produced by ultrasound pulses have been shown to activate mechanosensitive ion channels and modulate peripheral nerves. However, while peripheral ultrasound neuromodulation has been demonstrated in vitro and in pre-clinical models, there have been few reports of clinical tests.

Aim: We modified a diagnostic imaging system for ultrasound neuromodulation in human subjects.

Improved Resting-State Functional MRI Using Multi-Echo Echo-Planar Imaging on a Compact 3T MRI Scanner with High-Performance Gradients.

In blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD)-based resting-state functional (RS-fMRI) studies, usage of multi-echo echo-planar-imaging (ME-EPI) is limited due to unacceptable late echo times when high spatial resolution is used. Equipped with high-performance gradients, the compact 3T MRI system (C3T) enables a three-echo whole-brain ME-EPI protocol with smaller than 2.5 mm isotropic voxel and shorter than 1 s repetition time, as required in landmark fMRI studies.

Machine learning based de-noising of electron back scatter patterns of various crystallographic metallic materials fabricated using laser directed energy deposition.

A novel machine learning (ML) method of refining noisy Electron Back Scatter Patterns (EBSP) is proposed. For this, conditional generative adversarial networks (c-GAN) have been employed. The problem of de-noising the EBSPs was formulated as an image translation task conditioned on the input images to get refined/denoised output of EBSPs which can be indexed using conventional Hough transform based indexing algorithms.

Immunogenicity and safety of homologous and heterologous booster vaccination of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (COVISHIELD™) and BBV152 (COVAXIN®): a non-inferiority phase 4, participant and observer-blinded, randomised study.

Background: Primary SARS-CoV-2 vaccination has been shown to wane with time and provide lower protection from disease with new viral variants, prompting the WHO to recommend the administration of booster doses. We determined the safety and immunogenicity of homologous or heterologous boosters with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (COVISHIELD™) or BBV152 (COVAXIN®), the two vaccines used widely for primary immunization in India, in participants who had already received two primary doses of these vaccines.

Methods: Participants primed with two doses each of COVISHIELD™ or COVAXIN® 12-36 weeks previously, were randomised to receive either COVISHIELD™ or COVAXIN® booster in a 1:1 ratio.

A Case Report of Rare Vocal Cord Hemangioendothelioma in a Paediatric Larynx.

Hemangioendothelioma (HEM) is a vascular tumour which is locally aggressive with a low-grade malignant potential. We present a rare case of HEM arising from the vocal cord of a 10-year-old female child. Video laryngoscopy clearly showed a large vocal cord polyp-like mass attached to middle one-third of left cord.

Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome and Ischemic Stroke Secondary to Peripartum Cardiomyopathy - Report a Rare Case.

Acute cardioembolic stroke is a rare presentation of peripartum cardiomyopathy. We present an unusual case of peripartum cardiomyopathy, that subsequently developed cardioembolic ischemic stroke and reversible cerebral vasospasms.  A 26-year-old G1P1 caucasian woman presented to the emergency department 10 days after a spontaneous vaginal delivery with the clinical and physical presentation of acute heart failure.

Risk of COVID-19 re-infection and its predictors (CORES): protocol for a community-based longitudinal cohort study in Vellore, India.

Introduction: The incidence of SARS-CoV-2 re-infection has not been widely evaluated in low-income and middle-income countries. Understanding immune responses elicited by SARS-CoV-2 natural infection and factors that lead to re-infection in a community setting is important for public health policy. We aim to investigate the risk of primary infection and re-infection among those without and with evidence of prior infection as defined by the presence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

Probing responses to deep brain stimulation with functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for certain movement disorders and has additionally shown promise for various psychiatric, cognitive, and seizure disorders. However, the mechanisms through which stimulation exerts therapeutic effects are incompletely understood. A technique that may help to address this knowledge gap is functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Stimulation of the hepatoportal nerve plexus with focused ultrasound restores glucose homoeostasis in diabetic mice, rats and swine.

Peripheral neurons that sense glucose relay signals of glucose availability to integrative clusters of neurons in the brain. However, the roles of such signalling pathways in the maintenance of glucose homoeostasis and their contribution to disease are unknown. Here we show that the selective activation of the nerve plexus of the hepatic portal system via peripheral focused ultrasound stimulation (pFUS) improves glucose homoeostasis in mice and rats with insulin-resistant diabetes and in swine subject to hyperinsulinemic-euglycaemic clamps.

A CNN Segmentation-Based Approach to Object Detection and Tracking in Ultrasound Scans with Application to the Vagus Nerve Detection.

Hepatocellular carcinoma patients with portal vein thrombosis treated with robotic radiosurgery: Interim results of a prospective study.

Background: This is a prospective study evaluating the role of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) with CyberKnife (CK) in Indian patients suffering from hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein thrombosis (HCC-PVT).

Methods: Patients with inoperable HCC-PVT, good performance score (PS), and liver function are accrued for treatment on CK (version M6) and planned with Multiplan (iDMS V2.0).
