The study aims to evaluate how effective the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is for suspected gastrointestinal bleeding in hospitals and its impact on hospital stays and endoscopic procedures.
It found that FOBT is often misused for diagnosing gastrointestinal bleeding, showing low sensitivity and leading to inefficient management decisions, such as unnecessary endoscopies and extended hospital stays.
The authors recommend that FOBT should primarily be used for outpatient colorectal cancer screening, not for hospital evaluations of gastrointestinal bleeding or anemia.
