Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates long-term recovery in patients undergoing two types of minimally invasive surgical approaches to total hip arthroplasty (THA) and compares them to control subjects.
  • Significant differences in gait recovery patterns were found one year post-surgery, particularly in hip abductor function, even though overall recovery appeared complete by three months.
  • The study highlights the need for further research to enhance biomechanical outcomes, as patients are increasingly expecting better functionality and durability from their surgeries.

Objective: To evaluate the relation between walking speeds measured in a gait laboratory and those measured in real-world settings (habitual speed) in subjects with total hip replacements (THRs) and control subjects. The secondary objective is to determine whether the relationship between gait laboratory and habitual speeds was affected by recovery time or related to clinical indices.

Design: Cohort study.
