Article Synopsis
  • Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare neurological condition characterized by a sudden, temporary loss of memory, both for current events and past experiences.
  • A case study of a 58-year-old woman highlighted TGA, as she experienced sudden memory loss and disorientation after an ocean dive, with all medical tests returning normal results.
  • After close monitoring in the emergency department, she gradually recovered her ability to form new memories and was discharged with no lasting symptoms, with a need for further research to understand TGA's causes and risk factors.

Background Central venous cannulation provides venous access in different settings. Multiple guidelines and checklists still recommend confirmation of central venous catheter (CVC) tip position using a chest radiograph. The rationale is to detect and prevent complications thus optimizing CVC placement.

Problem: The health sector is a critical partner in the response to violence against women, but little is known about how to translate international guidelines and sustainable good practice in remote and under-resourced health systems.

Aim: This research explores the barriers and enablers that midwives report in responding to domestic and sexual violence in Timor-Leste, a country with a very high rate of violence against women. The aim is to inform a systems approach to health provider training and engagement applicable to Timor-Leste and other low-resource settings.

Purpose: Previous studies have shown that microvascular dysfunction (MD) is associated with a number of cardiovascular risk factors, including obesity. Few studies have assessed microvascular reactivity in children, and in most of these, results were confounded by the effects of puberty. Our aim was to establish whether MD is already present in obese prepubertal children.

Hepatic fibropoiesis has been confirmed in canine visceral leishmaniasis. In fibrotic disease, hepatic stellate cells (HSC) play an important role in fibropoiesis, undergoing activation by TGF-β to acquire characteristics of myofibroblasts. These cells show extensive capacity for proliferation, motility, contractility, collagen synthesis and extracellular matrix component synthesis.

In canine visceral leishmaniasis a diffuse chronic inflammatory exudate and an intense parasite load throughout the gastrointestinal tract has been previously reported. However, these studies did not allow a properly description of canine cellular morphology details. The aim of our study was to better characterize these cells in carrying out a qualitative and quantitative histological study in the gastrointestinal tract of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum by examining gut tissues embedded in glycol methacrylate.

Soft tissue complications following hip arthroplasty may occur either in cases of total hip arthroplasty or in hip resurfacing, a technique that has become popular in cases involving young patients. Both orthopedic and radiological literatures are now calling attention to these symptomatic periprosthetic soft tissue masses called inflammatory pseudotumors or aseptic lymphocytic vasculites-associated lesions. Pseudotumors are associated with pain, instability, neuropathy, and premature loosening of prosthetic components, frequently requiring early and difficult reoperation.

Article Synopsis
  • Early exposure to cardiovascular risk factors can lead to inflammation and damage to blood vessel linings, resulting in thicker carotid intima-media, which is a concerning health indicator.
  • The study focused on 129 prepubertal children aged 5 to 10 years to analyze the relationship between certain cardiovascular risk factors and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT).
  • Findings revealed that higher body mass index (BMI) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) significantly correlated with increased cIMT, making them key risk factors in early cardiovascular health.

Introduction: Patients who have chronic renal disease present challenges to anesthesiologists because of the sequelae of the underlying disease. Postoperative pain is usually mild to moderate after renal transplantation and is a concern because of underlying co-morbidities and variable responses of the graft. Effective postoperative pain management contributes to a a successful outcome after renal transplantation.
