Lf (lactoferrin) is an 80-kDa iron-binding protein, which has been suggested to promote bone growth in murine models. In view of this, we aimed to analyse the immunohistochemical distribution of Lf in human embryonal and fetal bone and cartilaginous tissues at different gestational weeks in order to evaluate whether a role for this protein might be proposed also in human osteogenesis. Lactoferrin (Lf) expression was investigated by using a Lf monoclonal antibody in 50 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded human bone tumours [10 giant cell tumours (GCTs), 7 osteoid osteomas, 6 ossifying fibromas, 19 enchondromas, 2 chondroblastomas, 2 chondrosarcomas, 2 chondroblastic osteosarcomas, 1 myeloma and 1 adamantinoma] as well as in 8 samples of adult and foetal human normal bone specimens. In addition, the immunohistochemical expression of the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and Ki-67 antigen was analysed on parallel sections from the same specimens. Endoglin is an 180 KDa protein which plays an important role in the vascular system and cardiac embryogenesis. Indeed, monoallelic mutations in the endoglin gene are associated with the development of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia type 1; moreover endoglin knockout mice die precociously because of severe arteriovenous and cardiac malformations. In this study, endoglin immunohistochemical expression was analyzed in the heart of 23 fetuses (9-38 weeks), 5 of which displayed cardiac malformations, as well as in cardiac samples from 4 preterm and 1 term infants.

Its expression is increased by the hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), a potent stimulator of VEGF expression. The expression of the Na/I Symporter (NIS) in the basolateral cell membrane of the thyroid follicular cells is responsible for the active accumulation of iodide within the thyroid gland and for the subsequent biosynthesis of thyroid hormones. However, several tissues, such as salivary glands, breast, stomach, colon, ovary and endometrium, express NIS even if they are unable to organify iodide.
