- Delta-endotoxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and crystal proteins from Bacillus sphaericus (Bs) have been used for insect control, raising biosafety concerns.
- Testing showed that none of the Bt or Bs strains caused lethality in fish (Danio rerio) or effects on mouse bone marrow cells.
- However, exposure to Bt strains increased the frequency of necrotic cells in fish erythrocytes, while Bs strains showed no cytotoxic effects or apoptosis.
