This response requires appropriate communication between the sympathetic nerve terminal and vascular smooth muscle cell in the neurovascular space. A cross between two different races (race 7xrace 25) of the soybean root and stem rot pathogen Phytophthora sojae was analyzed to characterize the genomic region flanking two cosegregating avirulence genes, Avr4 and Avr6. Both genes cosegregated in the ratio of 82:17 (avirulent:virulent) in an F(2) population, suggestive of a single locus controlling both phenotypes. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of closed fracture healing using computed tomography and conventional radiography.

Rationale And Objectives: Development of new agents to induce fracture healing requires more sensitive methods to detect early changes in fracture repair. The aims of this study were to determine quantitative and qualitative features of fracture healing using volumetric computed tomography (CT) and to compare them with conventional radiography during the weeks following uncomplicated fractures of the appendicular skeleton.

Materials And Methods: 39 otherwise healthy men and women with acute, closed fractures of the distal radius, tibial and/or fibular malleoli, or tibial shaft, were enrolled and underwent CT and X-ray imaging at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16 (tibial shaft only) weeks post fracture.

The use of defenses and physician health care costs: are physician health care costs lower in persons with more adaptive defense profiles?

Background: The objective of the present study was to determine if persons who use more adaptive defenses have lower physician health care costs compared to those who use less adaptive defenses.

Methods: We randomly selected 667 persons from the 1995 population-based Nova Scotia Health Survey who completed a videotaped structured interview. Each interview was rated for typical defense use by the Defense-Q.

Methods: Eligible patients had normal renal, hematologic, and liver functions. Laparoscopy was performed on the first two courses for evaluation, adhesiolysis, and chemotherapy administration.

Ascidians are protochordates related to vertebrate ancestors. The ascidian larval tail, with its notochord, dorsal nerve cord, and flanking rows of sarcomeric muscle cells, exhibits the basic chordate body plan. Molecular characterization of ascidian larval tail muscle may provide insight into molecular aspects of vertebrate skeletal muscle evolution.

Safety-catch linker strategies for the production of radiopharmaceuticals labeled with positron-emitting isotopes.

A novel synthetic stratetegy for compounds labeled with the positron-emitting isotope carbon-11 is described. The use of precursors attached to a solid support via safety-catch linkers allows selective release of radiolabeled material, leaving unreacted precursor attached to the support. Two different linkers demonstrate the application to the preparation of radiolabeled N-alkyl tertiary amines and N-alkylsulfonamides.

Pathogen challenge can trigger an integrated set of signal transduction pathways, which ultimately leads to a state of "high alert," otherwise known as systemic or induced resistance in tissue remote to the initial infection. Although large-scale gene expression during systemic acquired resistance, which is induced by salicylic acid or necrotizing pathogens has been previously reported using a bacterial pathogen, the nature of systemic defense responses triggered by an incompatible necrotrophic fungal pathogen is not known. We examined transcriptional changes that occur during systemic defense responses in Arabidopsis plants inoculated with the incompatible fungal pathogen Alternaria brassicicola.

Improving the effectiveness of smoking cessation in primary care: lessons learned.

Aims: The 'Smokescreen' smoking cessation programme was introduced in Christchurch in 1995, with an initial study showing six-month, self-reported quit rates of 10% and 17% (with a validated deception rate) in primary and secondary care settings. Substantial modifications were made to try to improve this rate in the primary care setting and the programme has been implemented widely. Our primary aim was to estimate programme utilisation and six-month quit rates for enrolled patients in this general primary care setting.

Effects of thyroid hormone on food intake, hypothalamic Na/K ATPase activity and ATP content.

The effects of thyroid hormone on whole body energy metabolism and compensatory effects on food intake are well established. However, the hypothalamic mechanisms that translate perceived whole body energy demands into subsequent appetitive behavior are incompletely understood. In order to address this question, we tested the effects of T3 on food intake and body weight in rats and measured neuronal Na/K ATPase activity and ATP content in the hypothalamus.

Oxidative stress and bioindicators of reproductive function in pulp and paper mill effluent exposed white sucker.

This study investigates oxidative stress and bioindicators of reproductive function in wild white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) collected from environments receiving pulp and paper mill effluent discharges in northern Ontario. Samples were collected over an eight-year period adjacent to three pulp and paper mills using a variety of processing and bleaching techniques. Fish collected downstream of pulp and paper mills within the Moose River basin exhibited elevated hepatic and gonadal 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), the presence of which is indicative of oxidative stress in these tissues.

Coordination of plastid and nuclear gene expression.

The coordinated expression of genes distributed between the nuclear and plastid genomes is essential for the assembly of functional chloroplasts. Although the nucleus has a pre-eminent role in controlling chloroplast biogenesis, there is considerable evidence that the expression of nuclear genes encoding photosynthesis-related proteins is regulated by signals from plastids. Perturbation of several plastid-located processes, by inhibitors or in mutants, leads to decreased transcription of a set of nuclear photosynthesis-related genes.

Drug interaction in a renal transplant patient: cyclosporin-Neoral and orlistat.

An overweight 56-year-old type II diabetic on peritoneal dialysis (body mass index 35 kg/m(2)) was taking Orlistat for some months up until live-unrelated renal transplantation. Despite oral cyclosporin A (CyA) for 48 hours pretransplantation, it was very difficult to achieve adequate CyA blood levels for the first week postengraftment despite the use of much larger oral CyA doses. After opening his bowels on day 7, and the use of 3 days intravenous CyA, good CyA blood levels were achieved then maintained with conventional oral doses.

Leg blood flow during submaximal cycle ergometry is not reduced in healthy older normally active men.

The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that leg blood flow responses during submaximal cycle ergometry are reduced with age in healthy normally active men. Eleven younger (20-25 yr) and eight older (62-73 yr) normotensive, nonendurance-trained men performed both graded and constant-load bouts of leg cycling at the same absolute and relative [% of peak O(2) consumption (Vo(2 peak))] exercise intensities while leg blood flow (femoral vein thermodilution), mean arterial pressure (MAP; radial artery), cardiac output (acetylene rebreathing), blood O(2) content, and plasma catecholamines were measured. Dietary reference intakes: a comparison with the Nova Scotia Nutrition Survey.

The purpose of this study was to compare the newly released dietary reference intakes with the 1990 Nova Scotia Nutrition Survey and identify characteristics that influence compatibility with these new recommendations. For each of 17 nutrient recommendations, we calculated the proportion of participants who consumed intakes within the recommended range. We constructed a score reflecting overall compatibility between the new recommendations and the Nova Scotia Nutrition Survey data.

Comparative analysis of nutrition data from national, household, and individual levels: results from a WHO-CINDI collaborative project in Canada, Finland, Poland, and Spain.

Effects of graded LBNP on MSNA and interstitial norepinephrine.

Exposure to lower body negative pressure (LBNP) leads to an increased activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and an increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). In this study, we examined the relationship between MSNA and interstitial norepinephrine (NE(i)) concentrations during LBNP. Twelve healthy volunteers were studied (26 +/- 6 yr).
