Trigger finger (TF) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are common conditions often occurring together with an unclear relationship. While some studies conclude that TFs occur as a result of carpal tunnel release (CTR), others have not established a causal relationship. Our purpose was to evaluate the prevalence and timing of TF development in the same hand after open CTR in our population.

Background: The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery requirements state that an orthopaedic residency must offer at least 5 years of clinical education and some exposure to research. To expose residents to basic research, some programs, including ours, have a research track that allows for 1 year of basic science research. The degree to which research productivity during residency-which may be something that can perhaps be influenced by interventions like research tracks during residency-affects residency graduates' future research contributions is unknown.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of operative and nonoperative management of medial epicondyle fractures in young athletes.
Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
To our knowledge, no report has been published of a flexor tendon rupture as a result of a closed phalangeal fracture.A 58-year-old woman with multiple medical comorbidities presented with a closed, apex volar fracture of her long finger proximal phalynx with clinically intact flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis tendons in zone 2 of the flexor tendon sheath. After 5 weeks of nonoperative treatment, the patient reported hearing a pop in her finger, and clinical findings suggested rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis tendons.

Swallowing and biting responses in the marine mollusk Aplysia are both mediated by a cyclical alternation of protraction and retraction movements of the grasping structure, the radula and underlying odontophore, within the feeding apparatus of the animal, the buccal mass. In vivo observations demonstrate that Aplysia biting is associated with strong protractions and rapid initial retractions, whereas Aplysia swallowing is associated with weaker protractions and slower initial retractions. During biting, the musculature joining the radula/odontophore to the buccal mass (termed the "hinge") is stretched more than in swallowing.

In this study, we employed an odor habituation paradigm to evaluate the olfactory function of T alpha 1-3RT transgenic mice that overexpress tau, a key pathogenic protein in AD, and compared such function to that of wild-type controls who do not overexpress this protein. The T alpha 1-3RT mice, but not the controls, exhibited responses indicative of decreased olfactory function.
