Cellular senescence is not only associated with ageing but also impacts physiological and pathological processes, such as embryonic development and wound healing. Factors secreted by senescent cells affect their microenvironment and can induce spreading of senescence locally. Acute severe liver disease is associated with hepatocyte senescence and frequently progresses to multi-organ failure.

Platelet-rich plasma applications in the larynx: snake oil or stupendous?

Purpose Of Review: To explore and summarize recent work examining the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) applications for vocal fold disorder.

Recent Findings: Intrachordal PRP injections have recently emerged as a treatment option for patients with damage to the lamina propria of the vocal fold (scar, atrophy, sulcus and inflammatory lesions). Studies support significant improvements in patient-reported and clinician-reported outcomes, and objective phonatory parameters.

Paediatric Laryngeal Ultrasound: A Retrospective Cohort Study in Aotearoa New Zealand and an International Survey.

Objective: Vocal fold immobility (VFI) is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in the paediatric population. Laryngoscopy is the current first-line investigation for patients with suspected VFI. Laryngeal ultrasound (LUS) has recently emerged as an alternative method of identifying VFI.

Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network Guidance on Dementia: The Investigation of Suspected Dementia (SIGN 168) with Focus on Biomarkers-Executive Summary.

This is an executive summary of the recent guidance produced by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) dementia guideline group with regards to the investigation of suspected dementia. This is a sub-section of the broader SIGN 168 guideline released in November 2023. The guideline group included clinicians with expertise in Old Age Psychiatry, Neurology, Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine supported by colleagues from the SIGN and Healthcare Improvement Scotland teams.

Should paediatric tonsillar asymmetry be an indication for tonsillectomy? A single centre experience.

Background: Paediatric tonsillar lymphoma (TL) is a rare diagnosis. Historically, the presence of clinical features such as tonsillar asymmetry, grossly abnormal tonsil appearance and cervical lymphadenopathy raise concern for this diagnosis. Tonsillar asymmetry is considered to be the most concerning clinical feature; however, asymmetry is often apparent due to differences in depth or shape of tonsillar fossa and tonsillar pillars, rather than a true difference in volume.

Editorial Commentary: Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair or Reconstruction With Internal Bracing, for Properly Indicated Patients, Is Safe, Biocompatible, and Biomimetic.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with internal bracing (IB)-and ACL repair with IB when indicated-reduces graft or repair failure. IB is safe and protects ligament reconstructions and repairs. The IB construct should not be misunderstood as a synthetic ligament.

Robotic-assisted surgery for left-sided colon and rectal resections is associated with reduction in the postoperative surgical stress response and improved short-term outcomes: a cohort study.

Introduction: There is growing evidence that the use of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) in colorectal cancer resections is associated with improved short-term outcomes when compared to laparoscopic surgery (LS) or open surgery (OS), possibly through a reduced systemic inflammatory response (SIR). Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) is a sensitive SIR biomarker and its utility in the early identification of post-operative complications has been validated in a variety of surgical procedures. There remains a paucity of studies characterising post-operative SIR in RAS.

Multinodal Cervical Angiomyomatous Hamartoma.

Angiomyomatous hamartoma (AMH) is a rare benign lesion of the lymph nodes. Angiomyomatous hamartoma tends to be found in inguinal lymph nodes, and usually in a single lymph node. We present a rare care case of a 53-year-old presenting with a neck lump, found to be AMH involving multiple lymph nodes in her neck.

Outcomes of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With Independently Tensioned Suture Tape Augmentation at 5-Year Follow-up.

Background: Reconstruction using autograft remains the gold standard surgical treatment for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, up to 10% to 15% of patients will suffer a graft failure in the future. Cadaveric studies have demonstrated that the addition of suture tape augmentation to ACL autograft constructs can increase graft strength and reduce elongation under cyclical loading.

Deficits in muscle strength are not seen following recovery from augmented primary repair of anterior cruciate ligament tears.

Objectives: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair for proximal tears, where the ligament is re-attached and augmented with suture tape, can negate the need for graft harvest, thereby maintaining native anatomy. Autograft harvest has been associated with persistent deficits in lower limb muscle strength after recovery from ACL reconstruction. The aim of this study is to compare lower limb muscle strength following ACL repair and reconstruction.

National audit of pathways in epileptic seizure referrals (NAPIER): A national, multicentre audit of first seizure clinics throughout the UK and Ireland.

Background: Current guidelines set clinical standards for the management of suspected first seizures and epilepsy. We aimed to assess if these standards are being met across first seizure clinics nationally, to describe variations in care and identify opportunities for service delivery improvement.

Methods: Multicentre audit assessing the care of adults (≥16 years) referred to first seizure clinics from 31st December 2019 going backwards (30 consecutive patients per centre).

Valproate pregnancy prevention scheme: what are the barriers to enrolling patients and how do we meet them?

Background: The UK Medicines Health products Regulation Agency instructs that valproate prescriptions should be restricted in women of childbearing age to those consenting to the Pregnancy Prevention Programme (PPP). We assessed the compliance and barriers to the valproate PPP.

Methods: We retrospectively audited NHS Grampian's compliance with PPP guidelines among women of childbearing potential prescribed valproate between October 2017 and March 2018.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction and Accelerated Rehabilitation with InternalBrace™ Augmentation in a Professional Footballer.

Introduction: Interest in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair has been increasing as an alternative to traditional reconstructive techniques and encouraging results have been demonstrated using internal bracing with suture tape augmentation (FiberTape®, Arthrex, Naples, Florida). ACL repair is challenging if the rupture is mid-substance or distal. We describe the case of a hybrid ACL reconstruction with internal brace augmentation.

Challenges and solutions to cancer-related financial toxicity according to Australian health professionals: qualitative results from a national survey.

Purpose: To qualitatively explore Australian healthcare professionals' perspectives on how to improve the care and management of cancer-related financial toxicity, including relevant practices, services, and unmet needs.

Methods: We invited healthcare professionals (HCP) who currently provide care to people with cancer within their role to complete an online survey, which was distributed via the networks of Australian clinical oncology professional associations/organisations. The survey was developed by the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia's Financial Toxicity Working Group and contained 12 open-ended items which we analysed using descriptive content analysis and NVivo software.

The Who, What, When, and Where of Inpatient Direct Oral Penicillin Challenge-Implications for Health Services Implementation.

Inpatient direct oral challenge programs are increasingly deployed as part of antimicrobial stewardship initiatives to reduce the burden and impacts of penicillin allergy labels on antibiotic prescribing. Using data from a prospective, multicenter cohort inpatient penicillin allergy program, we identify the key targets for delabeling to aid health service implementation.

Key performance indicators for improving outcomes from retroperitoneal sarcoma surgery in New Zealand.

Background: Retroperitoneal sarcomas are a rare and heterogenous group of tumours. There is increasing evidence that high volume sarcoma units achieve superior outcomes than low volume units. Due to the relatively small population, New Zealand is unlikely to generate a sufficient case volume to be considered high volume.

Current landscape of cancer survivorship research in Australia.

Aim: Response to the substantial and long-term impacts that a cancer diagnosis and treatment has on the growing population of cancer survivors, requires priority-driven, impactful research. This study aimed to map Australian cancer survivorship research activities to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement and compare activities against identified survivorship research priorities.

Methods: An online survey was completed by Australian researchers regarding their cancer survivorship research, and the barriers they identified to conducting such research.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of secondary surgery following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair with suture tape augmentation in comparison to conventional hamstring ACL reconstruction. We hypothesised that there would be no differences between the groups.

Methods: This was a retrospective comparison study of patients undergoing ACL surgery between September 2011 and April 2018.

The effect of substance P and its common in vivo-formed metabolites on MRGPRX2 and human mast cell activation.

The tachykinin neuropeptide substance P (SP) is the canonical agonist peptide for the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK R). More recently, it has also been shown to activate the Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor X2 (MRGPRX2) receptor on mast cells (MCs), triggering degranulation and release of inflammatory mediators. SP undergoes rapid C-terminal truncation in vivo by a number of proteases to generate the metabolites SP(1-9)-COOH and in particular SP(1-7)-COOH.

Cyclocreatine Suppresses Creatine Metabolism and Impairs Prostate Cancer Progression.

Unlabelled: Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer mortality in men worldwide. Applying a novel genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM) of aggressive prostate cancer driven by deficiency of the tumor suppressors PTEN and Sprouty2 (SPRY2), we identified enhanced creatine metabolism as a central component of progressive disease. Creatine treatment was associated with enhanced cellular basal respiration in vitro and increased tumor cell proliferation in vivo.
