These tensions reflect the commitment of interpreters featured in narratives to providing patient-centered care through challenging circumstances.

A multi-ancestry genome-wide association study identifies novel candidate loci in the RARB gene associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Genetic factors related to pregnancy-related traits are understudied, especially in ancestrally diverse cohorts. To assess maternal contributions to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), we performed a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study (GWAS) of HDP in data from the North Carolina-based Personalized Environment and Genes Study (PEGS) cohort with validation in the UK Biobank (UKBB). The GWAS revealed two maternal loci associated with HDP at the genome-wide significance level.

Adipose tissue regulates energy homeostasis and metabolic function, but its adaptability is impaired in obesity. In this study, we investigate the impact of acute PPARγ agonist treatment in obese mice and find significant transcriptional remodeling of cells in the stromal vascular fraction (SVF). Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we profile the SVF of inguinal and epididymal adipose tissue of obese mice following rosiglitazone treatment and find an induction of ribosomal factors in both progenitor and preadipocyte populations, while expression of ribosomal factors is reduced with obesity.

Dietary control of peripheral adipose storage capacity through membrane lipid remodelling.

Complex genetic and dietary cues contribute to the development of obesity, but how these are integrated on a molecular level is incompletely understood. Here, we show that PPARγ supports hypertrophic expansion of adipose tissue via transcriptional control of LPCAT3, a membrane-bound O-acyltransferase that enriches diet-derived omega-6 ( -6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the phospholipidome. Manuka Essential Oil Triggers Apoptosis and Activation of c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase in Fibroblasts and Fibrosarcoma Cells.

Manuka essential oil has long been used in traditional medicine, though the effects of the oil on cancer cells have limited studies. The goal of this project was to treat cancer cell lines with manuka essential oil at different concentrations and to ascertain the effects on the cell proliferation of normal fibroblast (CUA-4) and on fibrosarcoma (HT-1080) cells. Cell lines were grown on 24-well plates, and subconfluent cultures were treated with varying concentrations of manuka oil for 24 h.

The prospective impact of extradyadic stress on depressive symptoms and the mediating role of intradyadic stress in parents-an actor-partner interdependence mediation model.

Background: Stress outside of the couple relationship (extradyadic stress) can spill over into the couple relationship, increasing stress between the partners (intradyadic stress). Extra- and intradyadic stress are furthermore associated with depressive symptoms. Due to the interdependence of romantic partners, this study aimed to investigate the influence of the person's own and their partner's extra- and intradyadic stress on the person's depressive symptoms in parents of toddlers.

Applying theories, models, and frameworks to help genetic counselors and students achieve clinical and professional goals.

Some genetic counselors (GCs) may find theories, models, and frameworks (TMFs) useful in clinical skills selection and when reflecting on or evaluating genetic counseling practice. This paper aims to demonstrate how TMFs can be used to postulate how different skills may impact patients'/clients' decisions, behaviors, and outcomes and consider how multiple TMFs can inform the use of various skills or strategies to achieve different goals. Additionally, we provide examples of TMFs that may help GCs in nonclinical aspects of their work, such as implementing and evaluating new interventions or service delivery models.

BODIPY dyes for optical limiting applications on the nanosecond timescale.

Since 2017, the Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation at Rhodes University has studied the optical limiting properties of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes with respect to high-intensity nanosecond timescale laser pulses. Concerns over the irresponsible use of laser pointers in the context of aviation safety have provided a need for materials that can readily transmit light under ambient conditions while rapidly attenuating intense incident laser pulses. The structural flexibility of the BODIPY chromophore facilitates the red shift of the main BODIPY spectral band that typically lies at 500 nm to the red end of the visible and the near-infrared through the introduction of vinylene groups at the 3,5-positions or an aza-nitrogen atom.

Cholesterol binding to VCAM-1 promotes vascular inflammation.

Hypercholesterolemia has long been implicated in endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction, but the mechanisms by which excess cholesterol causes vascular pathology are incompletely understood. Here we used a cholesterol-mimetic probe to map cholesterol-protein interactions in primary human ECs and discovered that cholesterol binds to and stabilizes the adhesion molecule VCAM-1. We show that accessible plasma membrane (PM) cholesterol in ECs is acutely responsive to inflammatory stimuli and that the nonvesicular cholesterol transporter Aster-A regulates VCAM-1 stability in activated ECs by controlling the size of this pool.

Background: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses reveal the importance of an accepting attitude towards cancer for mental health and functional coping. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the German translation of the Peace, Equanimity, and Acceptance in the Cancer Experience (PEACE) questionnaire (Mack et al., 2008) and to investigate its associations with mental health, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and related constructs.

Functions of patient- and family-centered pediatric cancer communication in Pakistan.

Background: Communication is an essential aspect of high-quality patient- and family-centered care. A model for pediatric cancer communication developed in the United States defined eight communication functions. The purpose of this study was to explore the relevance of these functions in Pakistan as part of an effort to understand the role of culture in communication.

Purpose: Clear prognostic communication is associated with improvements in quality of life and suffering for children with advanced illness. Yet recent evidence demonstrates that pediatric oncologists often avoid, defer, or soften prognostic disclosure. We aimed to describe pediatric cancer shareholder perspectives on quality prognostic communication to inform design of an intervention to improve prognostic disclosure in advanced childhood cancer.
