Burrowed discontinuity surfaces associated with condensed fossil concentrations demarcate breaks (hiatuses) in the Phanerozoic marine sedimentary record. Such intervals may be difficult to interpret in view of complex anatomy and varied fossil signatures. Transformation of a discontinuity surface into a heavily burrowed 'pseudobreccia' may further complicate the record, but this issue has remained unexploited to date.

Ammonoids are extinct cephalopods with external shells which predominated in many late Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine ecosystems. Stable isotope data from ammonoid shells constitute primary tools for understanding their palaeohabitats. However, in most sedimentary successions globally the aragonitic shells of ammonoids are dissolved during fossilisation process and therefore not available for geochemical studies.

Aragonite (along with calcite) is one of the most common polymorphs of the crystalline calcium carbonate that forms the skeletal structures of organisms, but it has relatively low preservation potential. Under ambient conditions and in the presence of water, aragonite transforms into calcite, the stable polymorph. Aragonite is also more soluble therefore, in water-permeable siliceous limestones (opokas) that are typical of Upper Cretaceous deposits of Poland and Ukraine, the primary aragonitic skeletons are either entirely dissolved and found as moulds and casts or transformed into secondary calcite, whereas the primary calcitic shells remain well preserved.

The paper contains a retrospective study of 12 cases of malignant small bowel tumors observed and treated in the Department of Oncological Chemotherapy of Medical University of Silesia. The authors presented the most common symptoms, typical diagnostic procedures and the difficulties in the diagnostics of small bowel neoplasms.

The paper presents a rare case of primary, non-Hodgkin brain lymphoma discovered in 64 years old woman. Non specific symptoms conducted to misdiagnoses of dementia and syderopenic anaemia. The proper identification has been made after 10 months by post-mortem histopathological analysis.

Two mutations of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene (C677T and A1298C) may lead to a decreased activity of the enzyme. These mutations may change a risk of some cancers. We evaluated these two polymorphisms of MTHFR in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NCSCL).

Wilson's disease defined also as hepatolenticular degeneration is an important clinical problem of young adults still causing diagnostic difficulties. In the course of the last decade, genetic background of the disease has been definitely established and elucidated, confirming the variety of genetic mutations, responsible for its origin. The current scheme of the disease treatment has been elaborated and established.

Unlabelled: The goal of this study was to evaluate serum level of EPO in 32 men with lung cancer (Squamous cell lung cancer N = 11, Adenocarcinoma N = 10, Small cell lung cancer N = 11) in relation to the degree of anemia, stage of disease and the regimen of anticancer therapy. The control group consisted of 29 men, among whom were 15 patients with posthemorrhagic anemia. Blood samples were withdrawn for assessment of blood count, serum concentration of EPO, iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and ferritin.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (Ormond's disease) is rare chronic inflammatory process, that can occur at any age. It is characterised by development of periaortic fibrous mass leading to progressive obstruction of vessels around the abdominal aorta and ureters. In the one third of cases we can find the causes of disease.

Aortic elastin turnover is significantly accelerated in atherosclerosis, partly because of activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system caused by hypercholesterolaemia. We postulated that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I) prevent the aortic elastin loss in experimental hypercholesterolaemia. Two doses of ACE-I (captopril, enalapril and quinapril) were used: a dose equivalent to that applied to human subjects and a dose 10 times higher.

Fibronectin (FN) is a glycoprotein component of connective tissue. It is involved in cancer progression. FN plays a role in non-neoplasmatic lung pathology in which fibronectin gene polymorphisms (RFLPs) have been studied.

A case of a 11-yr-long Wilson's disease treatment in a 16-yr-old boy with neurologic presentation was analyzed and monitored. In the face of severe symptoms of chelator intolerance, a comparatively low dose of 100 mg of zinc has been administered for the entire 11-yr-long treatment. Considerable improvement of clinical status was achieved, with accompanying regression of central nervous system lesion.

In hypercholesterolemia increased lipid and lipoprotein peroxidation occurs. The renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in atherogenesis. Angiotensin II induces smooth muscle cells proliferation and stimulates oxidation of LDL particles and foam cell accumulation.

Cancer patients often present altered serum lipid profile including changes of HDL cholesterol level. The aim of our work was to evaluate serum level of HDL cholesterol in patients with squamous cell and small cell lung cancer and its dependence on histological type and clinical stage of lung cancer. Fasting serum level of HDL cholesterol was analysed in 135 patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer and compared to a control group of healthy men.

In atherosclerosis numerous qualitative and quantitative changes in connective tissue metabolism parameters in serum and aorta occur. In atherosclerosis there is an enhanced activity of local renin-angiotensin systems. It leads to overexpression of ANG II, both in serum and arterial wall.

Epidemiological studies indicate that low serum total cholesterol level may increase the risk of death due to cancer, mainly lung cancer. The aim of our study was to evaluate serum levels of total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) in patients with squamous cell and small cell lung cancer and their dependence on the histological type and the clinical stage of the neoplasm. Lung cancer patients (n=135) and healthy controls (n=39) entered the study.

Epidemiological studies show that people with low level of total cholesterol have a greater risk of death due to cancer, predominantly lung cancer. The aim of our study was to evaluate serum level of LDL cholesterol and lipoprotein electrophoresis pattern in patients with small cell lung cancer and their dependence on clinical stage of the neoplasm. The studied group consisted of 34 patients with newly diagnosed small cell lung cancer and 39 healthy controls.

Elastin metabolism parameters (elastin-derived peptides and elastase-like activity) were determined in sera of patients with lung cancer and in healthy controls. The concentration of elastin-derived peptides was statistically significantly elevated in the lung cancer group. There was no statistically significant difference in the serum elastase-like activity between the groups studied.
