Depression, anxiety, insomnia and interleukins in the early postpartum period.

Background: Some new mothers have been shown to suffer from anxiety and depression associated with insomnia during the postpartum period. Our study assessed the impact of demographic, psychopathological, and biochemical factors on the incidence of depression in women during the early postpartum period.

Methods: A total of 119 women were evaluated at 24-48 h postpartum with the following psychometric scales: Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS).

Clinicians' adherence to guidelines for the preoperative management of direct oral anticoagulants in a tertiary hospital: a retrospective study.

Introduction: Despite clear, relatively easy-to-use guidance, many clinicians find the preoperative management of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) challenging. Inappropriate management can delay procedures and lead to haemorrhagic or thromboembolic complications. We aimed to describe preoperative management practices regarding DOACs in a tertiary hospital and clinicians' adherence to in-house recommendations.

Factors Contributing to Risk of Persistence of Positive and Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia during Hospitalization.

The aim of the study was to evaluate factors that may contribute to the persistence of positive, negative and other psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenia. All patients were treated in general psychiatric wards between January 2006 and December 2017. The initial study sample comprised of the medical reports of 600 patients.

Genetics, Genomics and Emerging Molecular Therapies of Pancreatic Cancer.

The number of cases of pancreatic cancers in 2019 in Poland was 3852 (approx. 2% of all cancers). The course of the disease is very fast, and the average survival time from the diagnosis is 6 months.

Feasibility and comparison of laparoscopic laser speckle contrast imaging to near-infrared display of indocyanine green in intraoperative tissue blood flow/tissue perfusion in preclinical porcine models.

Objective: To determine if laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) mitigates variations and subjectivity in the use and interpretation of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence in the current visualization paradigm of real-time intraoperative tissue blood flow/perfusion in clinically relevant scenarios.

Methods: De novo laparoscopic imaging form-factor detecting real-time blood flow using LSCI and blood volume by near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) of ICG was compared to ICG NIRF alone, for dye-less real-time visualization of tissue blood flow/perfusion. Experienced surgeons examined LSCI and ICG in segmentally devascularized intestine, partial gastrectomy, and the renal hilum across six porcine models.

Pharmaco-Electroencephalography-Based Assessment of Antidepressant Drug Efficacy-The Use of Magnesium Ions in the Treatment of Depression.

Pharmaco-electroencephalography (pharmaco-EEG) is a technique used to assess the effects of psychotropic medications on the bioelectrical activity of the brain. The purpose of this study was to assess the treatment response with the use of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and via EEG. Over an 8-week period, we analyzed electroencephalographic tracings of 91 patients hospitalized for major depression at the Medical University of Warsaw.

Effects of Surface Charge, PEGylation and Functionalization with Dipalmitoylphosphatidyldiglycerol on Liposome-Cell Interactions and Local Drug Delivery to Solid Tumors via Thermosensitive Liposomes.

Purpose: Previous studies demonstrated the possibility of targeting tumor-angiogenic endothelial cells with positively charged nanocarriers, such as cationic liposomes. We investigated the active targeting potential of positively charged nanoparticles in combination with the heat-induced drug release function of thermosensitive liposomes (TSL). This novel dual-targeted approach via cationic TSL (CTSL) was thoroughly explored using either a novel synthetic phospholipid 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phosphodiglycerol (DPPG) or a conventional polyethylene glycol (PEG) surface modification.

RGB-color forward-viewing spectrally encoded endoscope using three orders of diffraction.

Spectrally encoded endoscopy (SEE) is an ultra-miniature endoscopy technology that encodes each spatial location on the sample with a different wavelength. One challenge in SEE is achieving color imaging with a small probe. We present a novel SEE probe that is capable of conducting real-time RGB imaging using three diffraction orders (6th order diffraction of the blue spectrum, 5th of green, and 4th of red).

Substance Use Disorder Status Moderates the Association between Personality Traits and Problematic Mobile Phone/Internet Use.

Background: Associations between personality traits and problematic smartphone use (PSU) among individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) have not been widely investigated. The current study aims to assess whether SUD status moderates the association between personality traits and PSU.

Methods: The study group included 151 individuals with SUD and a normative sample (NS) comprised of 554 non-SUD students.

Psychometric properties of the polish version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT).

Background: Alcohol consumption is one of the risk factors associated with over 200 types of diseases, being strongly correlated with unemployment, low socioeconomic status, traffic accidents, and violence. Alcohol is also one of the main causes of premature deaths, especially among males. Early diagnosis based on screening may help to prevent the evolution from alcohol misuse to dependence by counseling or treatment.

Pathological use of smartphones may be the biggest non-drug addiction of the 21st century. Therefore, rapid screening tools designed for easy identification of people with problematic mobile phone use are needed. The main aim of the present study was to validate a short version of the Mobile Phone Problematic Use Scale (MPPUS-10) in the Polish population.

Background: Substance use is a growing problem worldwide, and there is a great need to develop national policies addressing prevention and treatment of substance-use disorders (SUD). However, the lack of a commonly used, valuable diagnostic tool to assess the symptoms of SUDs precludes comparison of the prevalence of drug-use problems as well as the efficacy of policy strategies applied in different countries. This study was conducted to validate one of the commonly used scales the Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (the DUDIT) for use in Polish condition.

Effects of Magnesium Supplementation on Unipolar Depression: A Placebo-Controlled Study and Review of the Importance of Dosing and Magnesium Status in the Therapeutic Response.

Animal studies using tests and models have demonstrated that magnesium exerts an antidepressant effect. The literature contains few studies in humans involving attempts to augment antidepressant therapy with magnesium ions. The purpose of our study was to assess the efficacy and safety of antidepressant treatment, in combination with magnesium ions.

SIMULTANEOUS ASSAY OF ARIPIPRAZOLE AND ITS ACTIVE METABOLITE IN SERUM BY HPLC.

A rapid, convenient, precise HPLC method was developed for the simultaneous determination of aripiprazole and its active metabolite dehydroaripiprazole in blood serum. The separation was carried out by RP HPLC on Symmetry C₁₈ column (150 x 4.6 mm; 5 μm).

Insomnia, postpartum depression and estradiol in women after delivery.

After childbirth, women may develop symptoms of depression with the associated sleep disturbances. This study assessed the relationship between insomnia and both depression symptoms and blood estradiol levels in women during the early postpartum period. 84 patients were assessed 24-48 h after labor.

Background: The neurobiology of alcohol dependence (AD) involves alterations in neurotransmitters and the stress response. We hypothesized that an interaction between functional variants of dopaminergic and neurotrophic genes may influence drinking in AD.

Methods: The relationship between alcohol consumption and single-nucleotide polymorphisms, Val66Met in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and Val158Met in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), was analyzed among 281 alcohol-dependent individuals.

Global Analysis of Predicted G Protein-Coupled Receptor Genes in the Filamentous Fungus, Neurospora crassa.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) regulate facets of growth, development, and environmental sensing in eukaryotes, including filamentous fungi. The largest predicted GPCR class in these organisms is the Pth11-related, with members similar to a protein required for disease in the plant pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae. However, the Pth11-related class has not been functionally studied in any filamentous fungal species.

Label-free quantitative mass spectrometry for analysis of protein antigens in a meningococcal group B outer membrane vesicle vaccine.

The development of a multivalent outer membrane vesicle (OMV) vaccine where each strain contributes multiple key protein antigens presents numerous analytical challenges. One major difficulty is the ability to accurately and specifically quantitate each antigen, especially during early development and process optimization when immunoreagents are limited or unavailable. To overcome this problem, quantitative mass spectrometry methods can be used.

Microfluidic purification and concentration of malignant pleural effusions for improved molecular and cytomorphological diagnostics.

Evaluation of pleural fluids for metastatic cells is a key component of diagnostic cytopathology. However, a large background of smaller leukocytes and/or erythrocytes can make accurate diagnosis difficult and reduce specificity in identification of mutations of interest for targeted anti-cancer therapies. Here, we describe an automated microfluidic system (Centrifuge Chip) which employs microscale vortices for the size-based isolation and concentration of cancer cells and mesothelial cells from a background of blood cells.
