We report direct measurements of the magnetic field screening at the limits of the Meissner phase for two superconducting niobium (Nb) samples. The samples are processed with two different surface treatments that have been developed for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity applications-a "baseline" treatment and an oxygen-doping ("O-doping") treatment. The measurements show: (1) that the screening length is significantly longer in the "O-doping" sample compared to the "baseline" sample; (2) that the screening length near the limits of the Meissner phase increases with applied field; (3) the evolution of the screening profile as the material transitions from the Meissner phase to the mixed phase; and (4) a demonstration of the absence of any screening profile for the highest applied field, indicative of the full flux entering the sample.

Aims: We aimed to identify mechanisms underlying the tolerance of Proteus mirabilis-a common cause of catheter associated urinary tract infection-to the clinically used biocides chlorhexidine (CHD) and octenidine (OCT).

Methods And Results: We adapted three clinical isolates to grow at concentrations of 512 µg ml-1 CHD and 128 µg ml-1 OCT. Genetic characterization and complementation studies revealed mutations inactivating the smvR repressor and increasing smvA efflux expression were associated with adaptation to both biocides.

A new high field spectrometer has been built to extend the capabilities of the β-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) facility at TRIUMF. This new beamline extension allows β-NMR spectroscopy to be performed with fields up to 200 mT parallel to a sample's surface (perpendicular to the ion beam), allowing depth-resolved studies of local electromagnetic fields with spin polarized probes at a much higher applied magnetic field than previously available in this configuration. The primary motivation and application is to allow studies of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) materials close to the critical fields of Nb metal, which is extensively used to fabricate SRF cavities.

The complexation of Mg with adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) is omnipresent in biochemical energy conversion, but is difficult to interrogate directly. Here we use the spin- β-emitter Mg to study Mg -ATP complexation in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIM-Ac) solutions using β-radiation-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR). We demonstrate that (nuclear) spin-polarized Mg, following ion-implantation from an accelerator beamline into EMIM-Ac, binds to ATP within its radioactive lifetime before depolarizing.

Objectives: To facilitate exploring a link between pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and diabetes mellitus, we constructed a novel 3-dimensional (3D) in vitro coculturing system for studying interactions between PDAC and islet cells.

Methods: Adopting a 3D rotary cell culture system, we have cocultured several PDAC cell lines and MIN6 islet β cells. The cellular morphology and viability of both cell types were investigated by time-lapse imaging, confocal and scanning electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry.

Vandetanib-eluting radiopaque beads (VERB) have been developed for use in transarterial chemoembolization of liver tumours, with the goal of combining embolization with local delivery of antiangiogenic therapy. The objective of this study was to investigate how embolization-induced hypoxia may affect antitumoural activity of vandetanib, an inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), in the context of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. We studied the effect of vandetanib on proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis of HCC cells, in hypoxic conditions, as well as the direct effects of the beads on 3D HCC spheroids.

We perform detailed muon spin rotation (μSR) measurements in the classic antiferromagnet Fe_{2}O_{3} and explain the spectra by considering dynamic population and dissociation of charge-neutral muon-polaron complexes. We show that charge-neutral muon states in Fe_{2}O_{3}, despite lacking the signatures typical of charge-neutral muonium centers in nonmagnetic materials, have a significant impact on the measured μSR frequencies and relaxation rates. Our identification of such polaronic muon centers in Fe_{2}O_{3} suggests that isolated hydrogen (H) impurities form analogous complexes, and that H interstitials may be a source of charge carrier density in Fe_{2}O_{3}.

We investigate the near-surface relaxation of freestanding atactic polystyrene films with molecular dynamics simulations. As in previous coarse-grained simulations, relaxation times for backbone segments and phenyl rings are linked to their bulk relaxation times via a power-law coupling relation. Variation of the coupling exponent with distance from the surface is consistent with depth-dependent activation barriers.

A preconcentration method for the determination of noble metals (Ag, Au, Ir, Os, Pd, Pt, Re, Rh, Ru) was developed using alumina as a sorbent. The method involves an off-line preconcentration analytical procedure: the formation of chloro-complexes of these elements with HCl, loading of the chloro-complexes on alumina followed by elution of analytes and analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The effects of HCl/HNO concentration in the sample digest, mass of alumina, and concentration of eluents (HCl and HNO)/thiourea were studied using multivariate experimental designs.

Eurasian beaver () populations are expanding across Europe. Depending on location, beaver dams bring multiple benefits and/or require management. Using nationally available data, we developed: a Beaver Forage Index (BFI), identifying beaver foraging habitat, and a Beaver Dam Capacity (BDC) model, classifying suitability of river reaches for dam construction, to estimate location and number of dams at catchment scales.

We have studied a mosaic of 1T-CrSe single crystals using β-detected nuclear magnetic resonance of Li from 4 to 300 K. We identify two broad resonances that show no evidence of quadrupolar splitting, indicating two magnetically distinct environments for the implanted ion. We observe stretched exponential spin lattice relaxation and a corresponding rate (1/ ) that increases monotonically above 200 K, consistent with the onset of ionic diffusion.

Here we demonstrate that de-repression of the efflux system has occurred in clinical isolates of and reduces susceptibility to CHD and other cationic biocides. Compared to other isolates examined, RS47 exhibited a significantly higher CHD MIC (≥512 μg/ml) and significantly greater expression of Comparison of the RS47 and cognate repressor with sequences from other isolates, indicated that RS47 encodes an inactivated Complementation of RS47 with a functional s from isolate RS50a (which exhibited the lowest expression and lowest CHD MIC) reduced expression by ∼59-fold, and markedly lowered the MIC of CHD and other cationic biocides.

We report measurements of the diffusion rate of isolated ion-implanted ^{8}Li^{+} within ∼120  nm of the surface of oriented single-crystal rutile TiO_{2} using a radiotracer technique. The α particles from the ^{8}Li decay provide a sensitive monitor of the distance from the surface and how the depth profile of ^{8}Li evolves with time. The main findings are that the implanted Li^{+} diffuses and traps at the (001) surface.

Drug-eluting Embolic Bead - Transarterial Chemoembolisation (DEB-TACE) is a minimally invasive embolising treatment for liver tumours that allows local release of chemotherapeutic drugs via ion exchange, following delivery into hepatic arterial vasculature. Thus far, no single in vitro model has been able to accurately predict the complete kinetics of drug release from DEB, due to heterogeneity of rate-controlling mechanisms throughout the process of DEB delivery. In this study, we describe two in vitro models capable of distinguishing between early phase and late phase drug release by mimicking in vivo features of each phase.

Urethral catheters are the most commonly deployed medical devices and used to manage a wide range of conditions in both hospital and community care settings. The use of long-term catheterization, where the catheter remains in place for a period >28 days remains common, and the care of these patients is often undermined by the acquisition of infections and formation of biofilms on catheter surfaces. Particular problems arise from colonization with urease-producing species such as Proteus mirabilis, which form unusual crystalline biofilms that encrust catheter surfaces and block urine flow.

NMR spectra of Mg2+ ions in ionic liquids were recorded using a highly sensitive variant of NMR spectroscopy known as β-NMR. The β-NMR spectra of MgCl2 in EMIM-Ac and EMIM-DCA compare favourably with conventional NMR, and exhibit linewidths of ∼3 ppm, allowing for discrimination of species with oxygen and nitrogen coordination.

There is indirect evidence that the dynamics of a polymer near a free surface are enhanced compared with the bulk but there are few studies of how dynamics varies with depth. β-Detected nuclear spin relaxation of implanted 8Li+ has been used to directly probe the temperature and depth dependence of the γ-relaxation mode, which is due to phenyl rings undergoing restricted rotation, in thin films of atactic deuterated polystyrene (PS-d8) and determine how the depth dependence of dynamics is affected by sample processing, such as annealing, floating on water and the inclusion of a surfactant, and by the presence of a buried interface. The activation energy for the γ-relaxation process is lower near the free surface.

Environmental stressors associated with human land and water-use activities have degraded many riparian ecosystems across the western United States. These stressors include (i) the widespread expansion of invasive plant species that displace native vegetation and exacerbate streamflow and sediment regime alteration; (ii) agricultural and urban development in valley bottoms that decouple streams and rivers from their floodplains and reduce instream wood recruitment and retention; and (iii) flow modification that reduces water quantity and quality, degrading aquatic habitats. Here we apply a novel drainage network model to assess the impacts of multiple stressors on reach-scale riparian condition across two large U.

In vitro, pancreatic β-cells tend to reduce their ability to aggregate into islets and lose insulin-producing ability, likely due to insufficient cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions that are essential for β-cell retention, viability and functionality. In response to these needs, surfaces of succinylated chitosan-based beads (NSC) were modified with zwitterionic carboxy-betaine (CB) moieties, a compatible osmolyte known to regulate cellular hydration state, and used to promote the formation of β-cell spheroids using a conventional 2D cell culture technique. The NSC were synthesised by ionic gelation and surface-functionalised with CB using carbodiimide chemistry.

β-detected NMR (β-NMR) has been used to study the molecular-scale dynamics of lithium ions in thin films of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) containing either lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) or lithium trifluoroacetate (LiTFA) salts at monomer-to-salt ratios (EO/Li) of 8.3. The results are compared with previous β-NMR measurements on pure PEO and PEO with lithium triflate (LiOTf) at the same loading [McKenzie et al.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most frequent cause of cancer deaths worldwide. The standard of care for intermediate HCC is transarterial chemoembolization, which combines tumour embolization with locoregional delivery of the chemotherapeutic doxorubicin. Embolization therapies induce hypoxia, leading to the escape and proliferation of hypoxia-adapted cancer cells.

Since their introduction around a decade ago, embolic drug-eluting beads (DEBs) have become a well-established treatment option for the locoregional transarterial treatment of hepatic malignancies. Despite this success, the therapy is seen to be limited by the choice of drug and more effective options are therefore being sought. These include the small molecule multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (MTKi), which exert an anti-angiogenic and anti-proliferative effect that could be highly beneficial in combating some of the unwanted downstream consequences of embolization.
