In this multi-ancestry genome-wide association study (GWAS) and fine mapping study of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) subsites, we analysed 19,073 cases and 38,857 controls and identified 29 independent novel loci. We provide robust evidence that a 3' UTR variant in (rs78378222, T>G) confers a 40% reduction in odds of developing overall HNSCC. We further examine the gene-environment relationship of and variants demonstrating their effects act through both smoking and alcohol use.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a solvent used to dissolve a variety of organic compounds. It is presumed to be non-toxic at concentrations below 1 % v/v, although several studies have demonstrated that low dose DMSO exposure can alter cellular biochemistry. This study evaluated the toxicity of DMSO at 0.

We analysed a large population-based cohort (UK Biobank) using a causal framework, to determine if childhood maltreatment is related to chronic "all over" body pain in adulthood. We used doubly robust estimation with inverse probability weights to estimate the difference in risk of chronic pain "all over" between those exposed/not exposed to childhood maltreatment (abuse or neglect).

Metals, such as lead (Pb) often occur in urban mangrove forests, where shore crabs reside, and being neurotoxic may cause sub-lethal effects on behaviour. In this study, we asked whether exposure to Pb influences the outcomes of male-male competition in the Semaphore crab, Heloecius cordiformis, thereby altering outcomes of intrasexual selection.

There remains uncertainty surrounding the causal effects of smoking and alcohol on the development of these two cancer types. Here we perform multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) to evaluate the causal effects of smoking and alcohol on the risk of HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC in 3431 cases and 3469 controls.

Remote monitoring using electronic patient reported outcomes (ePROs) in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) may improve self-management and reduce the need for consultations. However, knowledge regarding patients' willingness to use remote care and adherence to reporting ePROs is scarce. The objective of this study was to assess axSpA patients' willingness to use remote care and adherence to reporting of ePROs.

Methods: Prospectively collected data on secukinumab-treated axSpA patients with known radiographic status were pooled from nine countries.Remission rates based on patient-reported outcomes (PROs; Numeric Rating Scale (0-10), for example, pain ≤2/Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) ≤2 and Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS) inactive disease (ID) <1.
The UK Antimicrobial Registry (UKAR) has been developed to capture data on real world usage of antimicrobial agents with an initial focus on those used to treat drug-resistant infections. Several industry partners have committed support for the study, which is included in the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio in England with similar arrangements in the three devolved UK nations. The two antimicrobials in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) subscription model pilot (cefiderocol and ceftazidime/avibactam) are included in the UKAR and future expansion of work in this area is planned.

Arising from previous work, a project proposal was presented at the 2023 meeting; the project aims to improve early diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) by comparing a physician-based vs a patient questionnaire-based approach. This project has received the backing of the GRAPPA research committee, but additional funding will be required.

Such patients, however, rarely have access to programmes to help them manage their fatigue.
Aims: To quantify the relationship between fatigue, work impairment and health-related job loss.
Objective: Because 66/68 joint counts are not always performed in routine care, we aimed to determine which of the modified 28-joint disease activity index for psoriatic arthritis (DAPSA28) or 28-joint disease activity score with C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) should be preferred for monitoring disease activity in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) when the original DAPSA (66/68 joints) is not available.
Methods: Prospectively collected real-world data of European bionaive patients with PsA initiating a first tumor necrosis factor inhibitor were pooled. Remission and response status were evaluated at 6 months by remission (DAPSA ≤ 4, DAPSA28 ≤ 4, and DAS28-CRP < 2.
Background: Fibromyalgia is a common reason for referral to a rheumatologist and is a centralised pain state with symptoms beginning in adolescence/early adulthood and manifests as pain throughout the body, fatigue and cognitive dysfunction. Whilst there is considerable evidence on effective treatments, diagnosis and management are complex. There is almost no evidence on how to organise health services to deliver recommended therapies.

Metal(loid)s primarily accumulated to roots (BCF > 1). Barriers to transport were observed at the root to non-photosynthetic stem transition (TF < 1) for all metal(loid)s, suggesting this species is suitable for phytostabilisation.

Reduced survival was observed at 1 day post-fertilisation (dpf) in larvae from bi-parental exposure (FM). Motile larvae at 2 dpf were fewer from maternal (FM), paternal (FM), and FM exposures.

In aquatic environments the concurrent exposure of molluscs to microplastics (MPs) and estrogens is common, as these pollutants are frequently released by wastewater treatment plants into estuaries. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the independent and co-exposure impacts of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EEDCs) at environmentally relevant concentrations on polar metabolites and morphological parameters of the Sydney rock oyster. A seven-day acute exposure revealed no discernible differences in morphology; however, significant variations in polar metabolites were observed across oyster tissues.

The objective of this study was to conduct an updated systematic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of chronic pain (ie, overall, headache, abdominal pain, back pain, musculoskeletal pain, multisite/general pain, and other) in children and adolescents. EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched for publications between January 1, 2009, and June 30, 2023.

Many non-pharmacological interventions have been investigated in recent years and some have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing fatigue and fatigue impact, however, there is limited guidance for clinicians to follow regarding the most appropriate management options. The objective of this scoping review is to understand and map the extent of evidence in relation to the factors that relate to the outcome of non-pharmacological interventions on MSK condition-related fatigue across the lifespan.

Although ASDAS-CRP and ASDAS-ESR are not interchangeable, the same disease activity cut-offs are used for both. We aimed to estimate optimal ASDAS-ESR values corresponding to the established ASDAS-CRP cut-offs (1.

Objectives: Previous attempts to pool prevalence studies in PsA have failed to take account of important methodological differences between studies which may have created biased estimates. The aim of this review is to estimate the prevalence of PsA within the adult general population worldwide, considering potential differences between population-based and health administrative studies separately.
Methods: Four electronic databases were systematically searched for articles reporting the prevalence of PsA.
Saltmarsh sediments are susceptible to accumulation of excessive concentrations of anthropogenically elevated metals such as lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). The resident salt tolerant plants of saltmarsh ecosystems form the basal underpinning of these ecosystems. As such, metal-associated adverse impacts on their physiology can have detrimental flow-on effects at individual, population, and community levels.
