The degree of recycling of leucine derived from protein breakdown into the precursor pool for protein synthesis was measured in rat brain at different postnatal ages, and age-specific values were used in the calculation of regional (local) rates of cerebral leucine incorporation into protein (lCPSleu) in 44 brain regions and the brain as a whole. Early in development, a greater fraction of the precursor leucine pool is derived from protein breakdown, indicating that protein degradation is higher in young rats compared with adults. In whole brain and in most regions, values for lCPSleu were highest at 10 days and gradually decreased with age.

Phylogenetic relationships among the extant lemurid prosimians were assessed cladistically using stereotyped vocal, olfactory, and visual communication characters. Among our results are 3 findings of particular importance. First, our data are consistent with those from several recent studies of highly repeated DNA fragments in supporting a close phyletic affinity between Lemur catta and the genus Hapalemur.

Schistosoma japonicum-infected mice were injected with antibodies to interleukin-2 (IL-2) and/or IL-2 receptor to clarify the role of IL-2 on the granulomatous reaction around schistosome eggs in the liver. Granulomas were of normal or slightly increased size in animals subjected to IL-2 blockade, but hepatic fibrosis was markedly decreased in treated animals 10 weeks after infection. Anti-IL-2 treatment significantly decreased the in vitro secretion of IL-5 by antigen-stimulated spleen cells, and peripheral eosinophilia and tissue eosinophilia were diminished.

Structure, usage and inferred function of the vocalizations of adults and immatures are examined and discussed. In 1971 we estimated that Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the tissues of mice were destroyed with an approximate half-life of four weeks. Our present results of five experiments suggest that egg destruction is not as rapid, and no significant destruction of eggs was detected for up to 26 weeks after treatment. However, in these experiments, a mean of 60% of the eggs in intestinal tissues were found in the feces at the time of treatment.

Granulomas around Schistosoma mansoni eggs are a principal cause of morbidity in mice infected with this helminth. In vivo treatment of infected mice with anti-IL-2 antibodies, with or without anti-IL-2 receptor antibodies, significantly diminished the size of circumoval granulomas in the liver and decreased hepatic fibrosis to half that in untreated mice. Antibody-treated animals also displayed a marked reduction in both peripheral blood and tissue eosinophilia while IgE levels were unchanged or increased.

Schistosoma japonicum-infected mice were treated with antibodies to interleukin-5 (IL-5) or gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) from week 3 or 4 to week 10 of infection. Neither antibody affected egg production by the parasite, and neither had a consistent effect on the secretion of IFN-gamma or IL-5 cell-related cytokines by spleen cells from infected mice. Mice treated with antibody to murine IL-5 had only rare eosinophils in hepatic circumoval granulomas.

A stable social group of 7 semifree-ranging black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata variegata) was studied for 4 months to catalog the behavioral repertoire of this species. Observations focussed on particular aspects of behavior were conducted before and after this 4-month period to supplement information gathered. Behavior in 11 major categories is detailed: postures, terrestrial locomotion, arboreal locomotion, feeding behavior, vocalizations, scent-marking, affinitive social behavior, agonistic social behavior, play behavior, sexual behavior, and parental behavior.

A vocalization of the ringtailed lemur (Lemur catta) was examined for individual differences according to several temporal- and frequency-dependent variables. Vocalizations were tape recorded at the Duke University Primate Center (Durham, NC) and spectrographically analyzed. Significant differences were found in pair-wise comparisons of call structure among the study subjects, thus providing the physical basis for individual discrimination.

A loud call of the ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) was analyzed for subspecific and gender differences according to four variables: pulse rate, median pulse duration, median high frequency, and median low frequency. These vocalizations of black-and-white and red ruffed lemurs and one hybrid ruffed lemur were recorded at the Duke University Primate Center (Durham, NC). Significant differences were found between subspecies but not between the sexes.
