A case of locally acquired (autochthonous) mosquito-transmitted Plasmodium vivax malaria was diagnosed in Arkansas in September 2023. This represents the 10th autochthonous case identified nationally in 2023, after 20 years without recorded local mosquitoborne malaria transmission in the United States. The public health response included case investigation, active case surveillance, mosquito surveillance and control, assessment of medical countermeasures, and clinical and public outreach.

Idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) is a poorly-understood sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness despite normal nighttime sleep. Combining human genomics with behavioral and mechanistic studies in fish and flies, we uncover a role for , synaptic adhesion molecules of the immunoglobulin superfamily, in excessive sleepiness. Neuronal knockdown of Drosophila results in sleepy flies and loss of the vertebrate ortholog of , , results in sleepy fish.

Background: Due to low numbers of active infections and persons presenting to health facilities for malaria treatment, case-based surveillance is inefficient for understanding the remaining disease burden in low malaria transmission settings. Serological data through the detection of IgG antibodies from previous malaria parasite exposure can fill this gap by providing a nuanced picture of where sustained transmission remains. Study enrollment at sites of gathering provides a potential approach to spatially estimate malaria exposure and could preclude the need for more intensive community-based sampling.

The classic view that neural populations in sensory cortices preferentially encode responses to incoming stimuli has been strongly challenged by recent experimental studies. Despite the fact that a large fraction of variance of visual responses in rodents can be attributed to behavioral state and movements, trial-history, and salience, the effects of contextual modulations and expectations on sensory-evoked responses in visual and association areas remain elusive. Here, we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study showing that hierarchically connected visual and association areas differentially encode the temporal context and expectation of naturalistic visual stimuli, consistent with the theory of hierarchical predictive coding.

The apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons in sensory cortex receive primarily top-down signals from associative and motor regions, while cell bodies and nearby dendrites are heavily targeted by locally recurrent or bottom-up inputs from the sensory periphery. Based on these differences, a number of theories in computational neuroscience postulate a unique role for apical dendrites in learning. Diabetes is known to delay wound healing, and this delay is attributed to prolonged inflammation. We found that microRNAs (miRNAs) might be involved in the dysfunction of diabetic-derived neutrophils, and dynamics of neutrophil and chronic inflammation might be initiated by miRNA-regulated genes. Moreover, studies of miRNA function in nephropathy have suggested that circular RNAs (circRNAs), which function as sponges of miRNA to regulate their expression, are potential biomarkers and new therapeutic targets for the diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy.

IgG serology can be utilized to estimate exposure to Anopheline malaria vectors and the Plasmodium species they transmit. A multiplex bead-based assay simultaneously detected IgG to salivary gland extract (SGE) and four antigens (CSP, LSA-1, PfAMA1, and PfMSP1) in 11,541 children enrolled at 350 schools across Haiti in 2016. Designing cereal-based products with appropriate metabolic responses is of high interest to the food industry in view of the potential health impact of the product. The objective of this study was to test whether a model that used the nutrient composition of breakfast cereals to predict their glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) could also accurately predict the GI and GL for complete (containing protein, reconstituted in water) infant cereal prototypes.
