Background: Urine is an attractive biospecimen for nutritional status and population health surveys. It is an excellent non-invasive alternative to blood for appropriate biomarkers in young children and is suitable for home-based collection, enabling representative collections across a population. However, the bulk of literature in this population is restricted to collection in primary care settings.

We present a portable polarimeter capable of real-time visualization of partial and fully polarized light over a broad band of wavelengths. Our system utilizes a Raspberry Pi computer with a low-cost data acquisition "HAT" and an integrated photodetection circuit. Wide bandwidth operation is achieved through digital calibration of an arbitrary retardance waveplate presented herein.

Despite this, PCC has not been fully adopted in RAC in Australia and internationally, and concerns about the quality of care persist. Over the past 2 decades, Montessori for dementia and ageing has been introduced in RAC to support and inform a cultural change towards PCC.

Serum ferritin concentration is the preferred biomarker for measuring iron status because it reflects iron stores; however, blood collection can be distressing for young children and can be logistically difficult. A noninvasive means to measure iron status would be attractive to either diagnose or screen for ID in young children.

However, in recent years, significant efforts have been made to develop biosensing technologies enabling rapid and close-to-real-time detection of waterborne pathogens. In previous studies, we developed a plastic optical fiber (POF) immunosensor using an optoelectronic configuration consisting of a U-Shape probe connected to an LED and a photodetector.

Developing protein confinement platforms is an attractive research area that not only promotes protein delivery but also can result in artificial environment mimicking of the cellular one, impacting both the controlled release of proteins and the fundamental protein biophysics. Polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) are attractive platforms to confine proteins due to their superior biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and controllable release under external stimuli. However, loading proteins into PNPs can be challenging due to the potential protein structural perturbation upon contacting the interior of PNPs.

Detection tools are fundamental to the diagnosis and management of those diseases. Current immunohistochemistry (IHC) tests, using sera raised against whole parasite lysates, have not been able to distinguish between and We used and recombinant proteins, expressed in and purified using insoluble conditions, to produce specific polyclonal rabbit antisera.

Biodegradation of insoluble biomass such as cellulose via carbohydrase enzymes is an effective approach to break down plant cell walls and extract valuable materials therein. Yet, the high cost and poor reusability of enzymes are practical concerns. We recently proved that immobilizing multiple digestive enzymes on metal-organic materials (MOMs) allows enzymes to be reused via gravimetric separation, improving the cost efficiency of cereal biomass degradation [ , , 36, 43085-43093].
View Article and Find Full Text PDFEnzyme immobilization offers a number of advantages that improve biocatalysis; however, finding a proper way to immobilize enzymes is often a challenging task. Implanting enzymes in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via co-crystallization, also known as biomineralization, provides enhanced reusability and stability with minimal perturbation and substrate selectivity to the enzyme. Currently, there are limited metal-ligand combinations with a proper protocol guiding the experimental procedures.

Rising anthelmintic resistance and regulation of synthetic drug use in organic farming is driving research and development of sustainable alternatives for GIN control. One alternative is the feeding of plants that contain secondary metabolites (PSMs) e.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is the traditional way for proteolytic studies, yet it is challenging when time-resolved, step-by-step details of the degradation process are needed. We recently found a way to resolve the cleavage site, preference/selectivity of cleavage regions, and proteolytic kinetics by combining site-directed spin labeling (SDSL) of protein substrate, time-resolved two-dimensional (2D) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, protease immobilization via metal-organic materials (MOMs), and MS.

Objectives: The importance of trauma-informed care (TIC) within residential aged care (RAC) settings has been increasingly recognised. TIC would ensure that older people who have experienced trauma over their lifetime have their needs better understood and accommodated. This scoping review examined the extent to which TIC has been applied within RAC settings.

The roles of AMF in reducing crop stress caused by cadmium (Cd) toxicity and in the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil are not fully understood. Here we report on a meta-analysis that sought to identify the functions of AMF in cereals under Cd stress.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAqueous-phase co-crystallization (also known as biomimetic mineralization or biomineralization) is a unique way to encapsulate large enzymes, enzyme clusters, and enzymes with large substrates in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), broadening the application of MOFs as enzyme carriers. The crystallinity of resultant enzyme@MOF biocomposites, however, can be low, raising a concern about how MOF crystal packing quality affects enzyme performance upon encapsulation. The challenges to overcome this concern are (1) the limited database of enzyme performance upon biomineralization in different aqueous MOFs and (2) the difficulty in probing enzyme restriction and motion in the resultant MOF scaffolds, which are related to the local crystal packing quality/density, under the interference of the MOF backgrounds.

To date, few qualitative studies have looked at farmers' antibiotic use on dairy farms in the UK.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were used to explore 15 Scottish dairy farmers' antibiotic use behaviours and the factors influencing their antibiotic use on farms.
Improvements in agricultural productivity are required to meet the demand of a growing world population. Phytopathogens, weeds, and insects are challenges to agricultural production. The toxicity and widespread application of persistent synthetic pesticides poses a major threat to human and ecosystem health.

Proteases are involved in essential biological functions in nature and have become drug targets recently. In spite of the promising progress, two challenges, () the intrinsic instability and () the difficulty in monitoring the catalytic process in real time, still hinder the further understanding and engineering of protease functionalities. These challenges are caused by the lack of proper materials/approaches to stabilize proteases and monitor proteolytic products (truncated polypeptides) in real time in a highly heterogeneous reaction mixture.

Microalgae are regarded as a promising source of biodiesel. In contrast with conventional crops currently used to produce commercial biodiesel, microalgae can be cultivated on non-arable land, besides having a higher growth rate and productivity. However, microalgal biodiesel is not yet regarded as economically competitive, compared to fossil fuels and crop-based biodiesel; therefore, it is not commercially produced.
