The effects of intravenous elgodipine, a new second-generation dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, on hemodynamics and coronary artery diameter were investigated in 15 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for suspected coronary artery disease. Despite a significant decrease in systemic blood pressure, elgodipine infused at a rate of 1.5 micrograms/kg/min over a period of 10 minutes did not affect heart rate and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure.

Visceral movement due to impact loading is believed to play a role in the locomotor-respiratory coupling (LRC) that has been detected in a number of mammalian species. In the bird and bat species in which LRC has been described, the effect of the wing muscles on the timing of respiration appears to be a dominant influence. To test the hypothesis that LRC occurs in humans propelling wheelchairs (where there is no impact loading and the arms are used for locomotion), we studied 10 wheelchair athletes on a motorized treadmill at three speeds.

Cardiac-locomotor coupling (CLC) has been reported during a variety of rhythmic human activities. One reason postulated for such coupling is that axial movements of the viscera during some activities (the "visceral piston") may enhance expulsion of blood from the heart; if so, accentuated vertical movements of the body should provide a powerful stimulus to coupling. To test this hypothesis, we studied 20 subjects hopping and 20 others skipping rope for greater than or equal to 10 min while electrocardiographic and force-platform signals were recorded, from which we derived the subjects' exercise and heart rates.

An intensive nonlinearity in the visual system can produce distortion products, or difference frequency gratings, when observers view two high contrast, high spatial frequency interference fringes of slightly different frequency or orientation added together at the retina. These distortion products are visible even when the two fringes imaged on the retina are above the resolution limit. Our experiments take advantage of this nonlinearity to measure the spatial filtering in the visual system following the formation of the retinal image, but preceding the site of the nonlinearity.

Passive transfer of neutralizing antibodies and active immunization with a toxoid of purified Shiga-like toxin II variant (SLT-IIv, edema disease toxin) were used to protect pigs against challenge with SLT-IIv. Six 6-week-old pigs were passively immunized by intraperitoneal administration of an immunoglobulin preparation from porcine antiserum against purified SLT-IIv. Six 6-week-old pigs and twelve 2-week-old pigs were actively immunized by two intramuscular injections of 25 micrograms of SLT-IIv toxoid given 2 weeks apart.

Purified Escherichia coli Shiga-like toxin II variant (SLT-IIv) was characterized with regard to selected physical, chemical, and biological properties. N-terminal amino acid sequencing confirmed the identities of 33,000-, 27,500-, and 7,500-molecular-weight (MW) bands seen on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of purified SLT-IIv as the A subunit, A1 fragment, and B subunit, respectively. The arginine-serine bond between amino acids 247 and 248 in the A subunit was determined to be the site for proteolytic cleavage into A1 and A2 fragments.

A prospective study of 248 patients admitted consecutively under the care of a single surgeon was performed and data on a variety of patient details were collected daily during the period of their hospitalization. Analysis of the data identified four quantifiable indices of morbidity, namely duration of hospitalization, duration of intravenous infusion, analgesic requirement and antibiotic administration, which can be combined arithmetically and used to produce a morbidity profile. The use of such a profile may allow comparisons to be made between different units if applied to specific conditions and permit a more accurate assessment of overall patient morbidity than can be presently done using mortality rates.

An analysis of several G418-resistant ES cell lines produced by electroporation of a promoterless neo gene (NASTI), shows an enrichment for integrations within, or adjacent to, CpG islands. A detailed analysis of two of the cell lines reveals short regions of homology between the genomic target DNA and the construct ends, and that recombination may be mediated by DNA Topoisomerase I. The DNA flanking the insert detects transcription of endogenous genes, and in one cell line divergent transcripts are detected.

Thresholds were measured for detecting spatial luminance modulation in regular lattices of visually discrete dots. Thresholds for modulation of a lattice are generally higher than the corresponding threshold for modulation of a continuous field, and the size of the threshold elevation, which depends on the spacing of the lattice elements, can be as large as a one log unit. The largest threshold elevations are seen when the sample spacing is 12 min arc or greater.

Flicker modulation sensitivity measurements made on high intensity orange steady backgrounds indicate that signals from short-wavelength sensitive cones (S-cones) have access to two pathways. At low S-cone adaptation levels the frequency response falls quickly with increasing frequency, but at higher adaptation levels it extends to much higher frequencies. At these higher S-cone adaptation levels, the following procedures can selectively expose either a process sensitive to low frequencies or one more sensitive to higher frequencies: (1) at high flicker frequencies, the S-cone signal can be nulled by a long-wavelength sensitive cone (L-cone) signal of suitable amplitude and phase, but at low frequencies a residual flicker persists; the modulation sensitivity for the residual flicker is lowpass in shape with a rapid decline in sensitivity with increasing flicker frequency; (2) sensitivity to flicker in the presence of a 17 Hz S- or L-cone mask is also lowpass with a similarly steep loss of high frequency sensitivity; yet (3) sensitivity to flicker during transient stimulation of the S-cones at 0.

A study of the effects of preoperative skin depilation on skin microflora has been performed. Areas of skin were prepared with a chemical depilatory agent and compared with areas of unprepared skin. Preparation of skin with a chemical depilatory agent causes no increase in skin microflora, in contrast to the effects of shaving as demonstrated by earlier studies.

The effects of simulated unilateral and bilateral knee-flexion contractures on standing balance were studied by testing 15 normal subjects on a Kistler force platform. Postural sway (mediolateral and anteroposterior travel) and the mean position of the center of pressure (as a percentage of the distance between the midlines of the feet and from heels to toes) were determined from 20 s of data. Unilateral and bilateral knee-flexion contractures of 15 degrees and 30 degrees were simulated for each subject by means of an adjustable line from the subject's waist to the sole of each foot.
