Background: The presence of an intraluminal thrombus in acutely symptomatic carotid stenosis is thought to represent a high-risk lesion for short-term stroke reccurrence though evidence on natural history and treatment is lacking, leading to equipoise and much variation in practice. The objective of this study was to map these variations in practice (medical management and timing of revascularization), determine the considerations that influence clinician decision-making in this condition and gather opinions that inform the development and design of future trials in the area.

Methods: This was a mixed-methods study using both quantitative survey methods and qualitative interview-based methods.

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are trimeric cation-selective channels activated by extracellular acidification. Amongst many pathological roles, ASICs are an important mediator of ischemic cell death and hence an attractive drug target for stroke treatment as well as other conditions. A peptide called Hi1a, isolated from Australian funnel web spider venom, inhibits ASIC1a and attenuates cell death in a stroke model up to 8 h after stroke induction.

Background: Disparities in health outcomes, including increased chronic disease prevalence and decreased life expectancy for Indigenous people, have been shown across settings affected by white settler colonialism including Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Purpose: This study leverages pre-procedural data and machine learning (ML) techniques to predict outcomes at one year following prostate artery embolization (PAE).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective analysis combines data from the UK-ROPE registry and patients that underwent PAE at our institution between 2012 and 2023. Traditional ML approaches, including linear regression, lasso regression, ridge regression, decision trees and random forests, were used with leave-one-out cross-validation to predict international prostate symptom score (IPSS) at baseline and change at 1 year.

Many of the world's most devastating crop diseases are caused by fungal pathogens that elaborate specialized infection structures to invade plant tissue. Here, we present a quantitative mass-spectrometry-based phosphoproteomic analysis of infection-related development by the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, which threatens global food security. We mapped 8,005 phosphosites on 2,062 fungal proteins following germination on a hydrophobic surface, revealing major re-wiring of phosphorylation-based signaling cascades during appressorium development.

Given there are no known studies which have examined multiple lower extremity muscles between different ankle positions during bridging activities, the objective was to assess how employing two different ankle positions (PF versus DF) while performing five common bridging exercises (three bipedal and two unipedal) used in rehabilitation and athletic performance affect core and select lower extremity muscle EMG recruitment. Twenty healthy subjects performed a 5 s isometric hold during five two- and one-leg bridge exercises: (1) on right leg with left knee to chest (1LB-LFlex); (2) on right leg with left knee extended (1LB-LExt); (3) standard two-leg bridge (2LB); (4) two-leg bridge with resistance band around knees (2LB-ABD); and (5) two-leg bridge with ball between knees (2LB-ADD). Surface electromyographic (EMG) data were collected using a Noraxon Telemyo Direct Transmission System from fourteen muscles: (1) three superficial quadriceps (VM, VL, and RF); (2) three hip abductors (TFL, GMED, and GMAX); (3) medial hamstrings (ST) and lateral hamstrings (BF); (4) hip adductors (ADD); (5) erector spinae (ES); (6) latissimus dorsi (LATS); (7) upper rectus abdominis (RA); and (8) external oblique (EO) and internal oblique (IO).

Background: Our previous research showed that, in Alberta, Canada, a higher proportion of visits to emergency departments and urgent care centres by First Nations patients ended in the patient leaving without being seen or against medical advice, compared with visits by non-First Nations patients. We sought to analyze whether these differences persisted after controlling for patient demographic and visit characteristics, and to explore reasons for leaving care.

Trauma is the leading non-obstetric cause of maternal and fetal mortality and affects an estimated 5-7% of all pregnancies. Pregnant women, thankfully, are a small subset of patients presenting in the trauma bay, but they do have distinctive physiologic and anatomic changes. These increase the risk of certain traumatic injuries, and the gravid uterus can both be the primary site of injury and mask other injuries.

An immunosuppressive microenvironment causes poor tumor T cell infiltration and is associated with reduced patient overall survival in colorectal cancer. How to improve treatment responses in these tumors is still a challenge. Using an integrated screening approach to identify cancer-specific vulnerabilities, we identified complement receptor C5aR1 as a druggable target, which when inhibited improved radiotherapy, even in tumors displaying immunosuppressive features and poor CD8+ T cell infiltration.

Aversive reactivity to negative affect has been described as a transdiagnostic mechanism that links distal temperamental vulnerabilities to clinically relevant behaviors. However, the abundance of constructs reflecting aversive reactivity has resulted in a proliferation of models that may ultimately be redundant. We performed a circumscribed review of studies measuring associations between six constructs - anxiety sensitivity, experiential avoidance, distress intolerance, intolerance of uncertainty, thought-action fusion, and negative urgency - and ten relevant coping behaviors.

Some of the pesticides used historically were efficacious, nonselective, persistent, and have led to serious impacts on the environment.
