Marginalized groups in Manitoba, Canada, especially females and people who inject drugs, are overrepresented in new HIV diagnoses and disproportionately affected by HIV and structural disadvantages. Informed by syndemic theory, our aim was to understand people living with HIV's (PLHIV) gendered and intersecting barriers and facilitators across the cascade of HIV care before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was co-designed and co-led alongside people with lived experience and a research advisory committee.

Unlabelled: The iSOLVE implementation project established and evaluated integrated processes and pathways, including a decision-making tool and educational interventions for general medical practitioners (GPs) and the upskilling of allied health professionals (AHPs). The study used a mixed-methods (parallel) design comprising surveys, qualitative methodologies, and an embedded cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT). Sampling was conducted within a Primary Health Network (PHN) geographic area in Sydney, Australia.

Purpose: Falls are a major concern for people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) due to associated motor and non-motor impairments. Promoting safe mobility behaviour may be an effective fall prevention intervention, however this concept is poorly articulated in the literature. The aim of this scoping review was to map out the definition and concepts of safe mobility behaviour to draw implications for PwPD.

Objectives: Describe the proportion of people newly living with HIV with sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) before, at, and after HIV diagnosis in Manitoba, Canada.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study reviewed clinical charts of all 404 people ≥18 years old newly diagnosed with HIV in Manitoba, Canada between 2018 and 2021. Syphilis, hepatitis C and B, gonorrhea, and chlamydia infections before, at, and after HIV diagnosis were recorded and analyzed by sex at birth, injection drug use status, use of methamphetamines, and housing status.

Purpose: This study examined how solvent-skin-solute interactions influenced the human epidermal permeation of three similar-sized phenolic compounds applied in a series of different solvents.

Methods: Human epidermal permeation fluxes and lag times of three phenolic compounds were assessed in Franz cells for a range of solvents varying in molecular size and solubility parameters. In order to develop a mechanistic understanding of the determinants of the permeation findings, the solubility of the compounds in solvents and stratum corneum, the extent of solvent uptake by the stratum corneum and the impact of the solvents on skin hydration and transepidermal water loss were also measured.

Background: The combination of intravenous hydrocortisone and enteral fludrocortisone may reduce mortality in patients with septic shock. The optimal dose and reliability of absorption of fludrocortisone in critically ill patients are unclear.

Methods: In a multi-centre, open label, phase II randomized clinical trial, intravenous hydrocortisone alone or in combination with one of three doses of enteral fludrocortisone (50 µg, 100 µg or 200 µg daily) for 7 days was compared in patients with septic shock.

Background: Ventricular tachycardia is an irregular heartbeat conventionally treated using invasive cardiac catheter ablation and medication. However, when standard treatments have been exhausted, cardiac SABR provides a final treatment option to this high-mortality condition. Complex diagnostic mapping and planning scans enable multi-disciplinary target delineation for a 25Gy single fraction.

The family comprising positive-sense RNA viruses, is characterised by its non-enveloped, small virions, broad host range, and notable tendency for host switching. These viruses are primarily associated with gastroenteric disease, though they can lead to haemorrhagic or respiratory infections. Our study employed a metagenomics analysis of faecal samples from stoats (), identifying two novel calicivirus species, named stoat vesivirus and stoat valovirus.

Introduction: Common major co-formulants in glyphosate-based herbicides, polyethoxylated tallow amine surfactants, are suspected of being more toxic than glyphosate, contributing to the toxicity in humans. However, limited information exists on using polyethoxylated tallow amine concentrations to predict clinical outcomes. We investigated if plasma concentrations of glyphosate, its metabolite and polyethoxylated tallow amines can predict acute kidney injury and case fatality in glyphosate poisoning.

Purpose: Accidental falls among adult cancer survivors are a health concern. Falls impose economic burdens and detrimental consequences to cancer survivors. This review aimed to synthesize findings from published research to explore the relationship between falls and cancer diagnosis and treatment among cancer survivors.

Objective: Australia has been undergoing a major aged care reform process since 2012 focused on consumer-oriented home and community-supported care, but little is known about the impact of these reforms on residential aged care delivery. This study aimed to review research about the quality of residential aged care service delivery during the implementation period of these reforms.

Methods: The review followed a five-stage scoping review framework and searched five databases for articles published between 2012 and February 2022 (the 10-year implementation period of the reforms).

Background: Manitoba saw the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in the province's history in 2021 and is the only Canadian province not meeting any of the previous UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets. Our goal was to describe sex differences and syndemic conditions within an incident HIV cohort in Manitoba, and the HIV treatment initiation and undetectable viral load outcomes.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of all people 18 years and older newly diagnosed with HIV in Manitoba, Canada between January 1st, 2018 and December 31st, 2021.

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of micro- and nanoplastic particles composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a significant contributor to plastic pollution, on human brain vascular pericytes. Specifically, we delved into their impact on mitochondrial functionality, oxidative stress, and the expression of genes associated with oxidative stress, ferroptosis and mitochondrial functions. Our findings demonstrate that the exposure of a monoculture of human brain vascular pericytes to PET particles in vitro at a concentration of 50 μg/ml for a duration of 3, 6 and 10 days did not elicit oxidative stress.

Background: This scoping review aimed to identify the barriers, facilitators and benefits of returning to work following burn injury, outcome measures used, management strategies, and models of care.

Objective: To provide a comprehensive overview about working-aged adults returning to their preinjury employment after burn injury.

Methods: We followed a pre-determined scoping review protocol to search MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, CCRCT and CDSR databases between 2000 to December 2023.

The occurrence of variations in human arterial branching of the upper limb has been commonly reported in peer-reviewed literature. However, the variability of upper limb arterial patterns may be underappreciated in medical practice, which can result in clinical and surgical errors. Here we report a case of a rare, unilateral arterial variation of the left upper limb of a 76-year-old Caucasian male cadaver, discovered during a routine educational dissection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the impact of a 6-month tailored physical activity program on depressive symptoms in older caregivers previously identified with depression.
  • Out of 212 participants, results showed no significant differences in depressive symptoms between caregivers in the physical activity, social-control, and usual-care groups at 6 and 12 months.
  • However, caregivers involved in the physical activity program who were caring for individuals with better cognitive function reported significantly lower depressive symptoms compared to those caring for individuals with cognitive impairment.

Repeat spillover of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) into new hosts has highlighted the critical role of cross-species transmission of coronaviruses and establishment of new reservoirs of virus in pandemic and epizootic spread of coronaviruses. Species particularly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 spillover include Mustelidae (mink, ferrets and related animals), cricetid rodents (hamsters and related animals), felids (domestic cats and related animals) and white-tailed deer. These predispositions led us to screen British wildlife with sarbecovirus-specific quantitative PCR and pan coronavirus PCR assays for SARS-CoV-2 using samples collected during the human pandemic to establish if widespread spillover was occurring.
