Background: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) targeted for global elimination by 2020. Currently there is considerable international effort to scale-up morbidity management activities in endemic countries, however there remains a need for rapid, cost-effective methods and adaptable tools for obtaining estimates of people presenting with clinical manifestations of LF, namely lymphoedema and hydrocele. The mHealth tool '' allows health workers in endemic areas to use their own mobile phones to send clinical information in a simple format using short message service (SMS).

Ethics and Professionalism 2016.

Trans Am Clin Climatol Assoc

May 2018

Whether a reaction to events in the clinical arena, a consequence of technological innovation, or the legitimization of the marked ethos in health care, the field of medical ethics has become a complex domain in our time. Indeed, the ubiquity of ethical dilemmas in the provision of health care is well documented with more than 99% of primary care physicians reporting ethical problems arising in the conduct of their practices (1-3). Although commentary relating to this domain has most often originated in the primary care setting, hospital-based medicine and its ethics committees are another fertile source, as is medical research.

Structure-property relationships are the key to modern crystal engineering, and for molecular crystals this requires both a thorough understanding of intermolecular interactions, and the subsequent use of this to create solids with desired properties. There has been a rapid increase in publications aimed at furthering this understanding, especially the importance of non-canonical interactions such as halogen, chalcogen, pnicogen, and tetrel bonds. Here we show how all of these interactions - and hydrogen bonds - can be readily understood through their common origin in the redistribution of electron density that results from chemical bonding.

Background: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is best known for the disabling and disfiguring clinical conditions that infected patients can develop; providing care for these individuals is a major goal of the Global Programme to Eliminate LF. Methods of locating these patients, knowing their true number and thus providing care for them, remains a challenge for national medical systems, particularly when the endemic zone is a large urban area.

Methodology/principle Findings: A health community-led door-to-door survey approach using the SMS reporting tool MeasureSMS-Morbidity was used to rapidly collate and monitor data on LF patients in real-time (location, sex, age, clinical condition) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Background: Individuals with high intensity of Loa loa are at risk of developing serious adverse events (SAEs) post treatment with ivermectin. These SAEs have remained unclear and a programmatic impediment to the advancement of community directed treatment with ivermectin. The pathogenesis of these SAEs following ivermectin has never been investigated experimentally.

Background: Oncolytic viruses (OVs), which preferentially infect cancer cells and induce host anti-tumor immune responses, have emerged as an effective melanoma therapy. Tanapoxvirus (TANV), which possesses a large genome and causes mild self-limiting disease in humans, is potentially an ideal OV candidate. Interleukin-2 (IL-2), a T-cell growth factor, plays a critical role in activating T cells, natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages in both the innate and adaptive immune system.

Local residents' changing perceptions of benefits and problems from living next to a protected area in western Uganda are assessed by comparing household survey data from 2006, 2009, and 2012. Findings are contextualized and supported by long-term data sources for tourism, protected area-based employment, tourism revenue sharing, resource access agreements, and problem animal abundance. We found decreasing perceived benefit and increasing perceived problems associated with the protected area over time, with both trends dominated by increased human-wildlife conflict due to recovering elephant numbers.

Human triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive disease, associated with a high rate of recurrence and metastasis. Current therapeutics for TNBC are limited, highly toxic and show inconsistent efficacy due to a high degree of intra-tumoral and inter-tumoral heterogeneity. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are an emerging treatment option for cancers.

The Protein Data Bank (PDB) has been an integral resource for shaping our fundamental understanding of protein structure and for the advancement of such applications as protein design and structure prediction. Over the years, information from the PDB has been used to generate models ranging from specific structural mechanisms to general statistical potentials. With accumulating structural data, it has become possible to mine for more complete and complex structural observations, deducing more accurate generalizations.

It is widely known that the recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa caused a serious disruption to the national health system, with many of ongoing disease focused programmes, such as mass drug administration (MDA) for onchocerciasis (ONC), lymphatic filariasis (LF) and schistosomiasis (SCH), being suspended or scaled-down. As these MDA programmes attempt to restart post-EVD it is important to understand the challenges that may be encountered. This commentary addresses the opinions of the major health sectors involved, as well as those of community members, regarding logistic needs and challenges faced as these important public health programmes consider restarting.

Background: Unbiased evaluation of trauma core competency procedures is necessary to determine if residency and predeployment training courses are useful. We tested whether a previously validated individual procedure score (IPS) for individual procedure vascular exposure and fasciotomy (FAS) performance skills could discriminate training status by comparing IPS of evaluators colocated with surgeons to blind video evaluations.

Methods: Performance of axillary artery (AA), brachial artery (BA), and femoral artery (FA) vascular exposures and lower extremity FAS on fresh cadavers by 40 PGY-2 to PGY-6 residents was video-recorded from head-mounted cameras.

Background: Bangladesh had one of the highest burdens of lymphatic filariasis (LF) at the start of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) with an estimated 70 million people at risk of infection across 34 districts. In total 19 districts required mass drug administration (MDA) to interrupt transmission, and 15 districts were considered low endemic. Since 2001, the National LF Programme has implemented MDA, reduced prevalence, and been able to scale up the WHO standard Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) across all endemic districts as part of its endgame surveillance strategy.

Rumpel-Leede phenomenon (RLP), also known as acute capillary rupture syndrome (ACRS), is a rare occurrence where distal dermal capillaries rupture in response to a proximal compressive force, such as a blood pressure cuff or tourniquet. This phenomenon has been reported to occur in states of vascular fragility such as long-term steroid use, hypertension or diabetes mellitus. Here, we provide a report of RLP occurring secondary to tourniquet application in a 26-year-old woman with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and a recent drug rash.
