Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of analgesia in critically ill pediatric patients undergoing mechanical ventilation during transport, focusing on its prevalence and influencing factors.
  • From 903 patients reviewed, 85.3% received pain relief, primarily opioids or ketamine, with those lacking analgesia experiencing higher rates of hypotension and hypoxemia.
  • Findings suggest the need for better pain management protocols during transport, particularly considering factors like transport duration and pre-existing health conditions.

To understand the multicellular composition of tissues, and how it is altered during development, ageing and/or disease, we must visualise the complete cellular landscape. Currently, this is hindered by our limited ability to combine multiple cellular markers. To overcome this, we adapted a highly multiplexed immunofluorescence (IF) technique called 'Iterative Bleaching Extends Multiplexity' (IBEX) to the zebrafish retina.

Accelerating text input in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a long-standing area of research with bearings on the quality of life in individuals with profound motor impairments. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) pose opportunities for re-thinking strategies for enhanced text entry in AAC. In this paper, we present SpeakFaster, consisting of an LLM-powered user interface for text entry in a highly-abbreviated form, saving 57% more motor actions than traditional predictive keyboards in offline simulation.

Although positive correlations between nursing professional development (NPD) staffing and organizational outcomes have been demonstrated, no evidence of optimal NPD department structures was found. Using an organizational participatory research method, NPD department structures in acute care hospital systems and their relationships to publicly reported patient outcomes and satisfaction were explored. Hospitals with centralized NPD departments had significantly fewer unplanned readmissions for pneumonia than hospitals with hybrid structures.

In genetic and refractory epileptic patients, seizure activity exhibits sleep-related modulation/regulation and sleep and seizure are intermingled. In this study, by using one het KI mice as a genetic epilepsy model and optogenetic method , we found that subcortical POA neurons were active within epileptic network from the het KI mice and the POA activity preceded epileptic (poly)spike-wave discharges(SWD/PSDs) in the het KI mice. Meanwhile, as expected, the manipulating of the POA activity relatively altered NREM sleep and wake periods in both wt and the het KI mice.

Alcohol-impaired driving is a formidable public health problem in the United States, claiming the lives of 37 individuals daily in alcohol-related crashes. Alcohol-impaired driving is affected by a multitude of interconnected factors, coupled with long delays between stakeholders' actions and their impacts, which not only complicate policy-making but also increase the likelihood of unintended consequences. We developed a system dynamics simulation model of drinking and driving behaviors among adolescents and young adults.

Article Synopsis
  • Transmission spectroscopy has been an essential method for studying exoplanet atmospheres, but recent studies question the assumption that the atmosphere is uniform, particularly for heated gas giants like WASP-39 b.
  • Using the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers detected differences in the morning and evening transmission spectra of WASP-39 b, finding that the evening spectra had significantly larger transit depths compared to the morning ones.
  • The findings suggest that the evening terminator is hotter and possibly clearer than the morning terminator, leading to implications about atmospheric circulation and cloud formation on the exoplanet.
