Article Synopsis
  • Maternal mortality due to abortion complications is a significant issue in Botswana, ranking among the top three causes of maternal death, particularly in the context of restrictive abortion laws.
  • A study reviewed 619 patient records, revealing that most abortions were spontaneous (95.5%), with incomplete abortions accounting for two-thirds of admissions; key complications included anaemia, septic shock, and a notable case fatality rate of 1.5%.
  • The findings suggest that self-induced abortions and delayed medical interventions are linked to higher rates of post-abortion complications, highlighting the need for improved medical responses in facilities handling such cases.
