Glutamate and GABA levels in the anterior cingulate cortex in treatment resistant first episode psychosis patients.

Background: Around 30 % of schizophrenia patients do not respond sufficiently to conventional antipsychotic treatment. Glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may be implicated in treatment resistant (TR) patients. Some data indicate that TR patients show increased glutamate levels compared to responders, but findings are inconclusive and limited in the early disease stage.
