The effect of coptis chinensis on the signaling network in the squamous carcinoma cells.

The effects of Coptis chinensis on the behavior of squamous cell carcinoma have not yet been established. We examined the anticancer activity of Coptis chinensis on human squamous carcinoma cells, both in vitro and in xenografted nude mice, and applied Pathway Array Technology to understand possible involvement of signaling pathways in Coptis Chinensis induced tumor cells inhibition as well. Following Coptis chinensis treatment, a time-dependent reduction in proliferation was observed in both cell lines and NCR/NU mice.

Capecitabine-based chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer.

Purpose: Metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC) remains a significant public health concern. The objectives of present study are to investigate the efficacy and safety profile of capecitabine-based chemotherapy in the treatment of MCRC.

Materials And Methods: We performed a computerized search using combinations of the following keywords: "metastatic colorectal cancer," "Xeloda," "chemotherapy," "capecitabine," or "5-fluorouracil.

A vaccine for hypertension based on peptide AngI-R: a pilot study.

Methanol extract of Longanae Arillus augments pentobarbital-induced sleep behaviors through the modification of GABAergic systems.

This experiment was performed to investigate whether methanol extract of Longanae Arillus (MELA) has hypnotic effects and/or enhances pentobarbital-induced sleep behaviors through the GABAergic systems. MELA prolonged sleep time and reduced sleep latency induced by pentobarbital similar to muscimol, a GABAA receptors agonist. MELA also increased sleep rate and sleep time in the combined administration with pentobarbital at the sub-hypnotic dosage and showed synergic effects with muscimol in potentiating sleep onset and enhancing sleep time induced by pentobarbital.

Heroin impairs map-picture-following and memory tasks dependent on gender and orientation of the tasks.

Male and female heroin-dependent patients (HDPs) matched with "normal" people were tested on 4 topographical orientation tasks: schematic map-following, map-memory, schematic picture-following, and picture-memory tasks. The results showed that, in general, female HDPs demonstrated greater performance deficits in map-following and map-picture-memory tasks than did other participants. In the map-picture-following tasks, participants showed a preference for turning right versus turning left, reflected by lower correct scores and longer latencies in completing left-oriented tasks.

Formation of rectangularly shaped Pd/Au bimetallic nanorods: evidence for competing growth of the Pd shell between the 110 and 100 side facets of Au nanorods.

In this letter, we report the competing growth of a Pd shell on the {110} and {100} facets of Au nanorods (Au NRs). This results in the disappearance of unstable {110} facets and the formation of rectangularly shaped Pd/Au bimetallic nanorods that show only four stable {100} side surfaces. The energy minimization to a more stable morphology is believed to be the driving force for the formation of the rectangular shape of the Pd shell.
