Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows real-time, in vivo examination of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A new high definition OCT with high lateral and axial resolution in a horizontal (en-face) and vertical (slice) imaging mode offers additional information in the diagnosis of BCC and may potentially replace invasive diagnostic biopsies.

Protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) represent important regulatory states that when combined have been hypothesized to act as molecular codes and to generate a functional diversity beyond genome and transcriptome. We systematically investigate the interplay of protein phosphorylation with other post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms in the genome-reduced bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Systematic perturbations by deletion of its only two protein kinases and its unique protein phosphatase identified not only the protein-specific effect on the phosphorylation network, but also a modulation of proteome abundance and lysine acetylation patterns, mostly in the absence of transcriptional changes.

U73122 which was originally identified as a phospholipase C inhibitor represents a potent direct inhibitor of purified 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) with an IC50 value of 30 nM. 5-LO catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid (AA) into leukotrienes which represent mediators involved in inflammatory and allergic reactions and in host defense reactions against microorganisms. Since the efficient inhibition of the human 5-LO enzyme depended on the thiol reactivity of the maleinimide group of U73122, we used this property to identify cysteine residues in the 5-LO protein that are important for 5-LO inhibition by U73122.

We introduce an effective low-energy pairing model for Fe-based superconductors with s- and d-wave interaction components and a small number of input parameters and use it to study the doping evolution of the symmetry and the structure of the superconducting gap. We argue that the model describes the entire variety of pairing states found so far in the Fe-based superconductors and allows one to understand the mechanism of the attraction in s(±) and d(x(2)-y(2)) channels, the competition between s- and d-wave solutions, and the origin of superconductivity in heavily doped systems, when only electron or only hole pockets are present.

In this article, a new tool for the intraoperative measurement of distances within the middle ear by means of a micromanipulator is presented. The purpose of this work was to offer the surgeon a highly accurate tool for measuring the distances between two points in the 3D operational field. Aim: To (1) evaluate the use of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-driven bioluminescence for quantification of total plaque bacteria in orthodontic patients, (2) compare plaque bacteria amounts at the bracket-tooth interface with use of elastomeric-ligated and self-ligating brackets after 1 year of orthodontic treatment, and (3) analyze formation of white spot lesions by photographic evaluation and laser-light fluorescence (DIAGNOdent).

Background: While the serological tumour marker S100 is well established for the detection of metastatic melanoma, the extracellular matrix protein osteopontin (OPN) seems to be a promising novel marker for invasive melanoma.

Current methods for identification of yeast from blood cultures may take several days after these microorganisms have been observed by Gram stain smears from positive blood cultures. We explored the use of a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) Biotyper system in combination with Sepsityper specimen processing and Microflex analysis for improved detection and identification of yeast species directly from positive blood culture specimens demonstrating yeast-like organisms by Gram stain. The mitotic spindle checkpoint (SPC) is a highly regulated mechanism in eukaryotic cells that ensures the even distribution of the duplicated genome between daughter cells. Malfunction of the SPC or deregulated expression of SPC regulatory proteins is frequently associated with a poor response to chemotherapeutic agents.
