Objective: Given the increasing relevance of the ANA assay to classification of SLE and the uncertainty and variation surrounding different ANA assay performance, we compared the human epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) to mouse liver (ML) substrate in our local cohort and provided a review of the evidence for their use in autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs).

Methods: Electronic health record data (2003-2008) were used to identify patients who had concurrent HEp-2 and ML ANA, and a diagnosis of SLE or other ARDs. We determined the agreement between HEp-2 and ML ANA regarding positivity, titre and pattern, and their predictors.

is a severe economic invasive pest of soft-skinned fruit crops. Management typically requires killing gravid adult female flies with insecticides to prevent damage resulting from oviposition and larval development. Fruits from cultivated and uncultivated host plants are used by the flies for reproduction at different times of the year, and knowledge of seasonal host plant use and movement patterns could be better exploited to protect vulnerable crops.

Article Synopsis
  • Carabid beetles may help control pests in US annual ryegrass crops, especially during autumn and winter when pests like slugs and lepidopteran larvae are active.
  • The study found that only certain carabid species actively feed on these pests, with one species showing a significant amount of gut DNA from lepidopteran and cranefly larvae.
  • None of the carabid species studied were negatively impacted by disk tilling, but one species showed a preference for vegetated field margins, highlighting considerations for ecosystem management.

Structural dimensionality and surface morphology are key properties that greatly affect the functionalities of materials. Herein, we report a synthesis of dimensionally coupled ternary nanocomposites from three-dimensional (3D) bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI), two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO), and one-dimensional (1D) bismuth sulfide (BiS) nanomaterials for tetracycline degradation under visible-light irradiation. The 2%-BiS@1%-GO/BiOI ternary nanocomposites show higher degradation efficiency than neat 3D-BiOI.

We designed a retrospective observational study to identify factors associated with ocular hypertension [OHTN, defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) > 25 mmHg] after intravitreal dexamethasone (IVD) implantation in diabetic macular edema (DME) patients. We measured IOP monthly after placement of an IVD implant, and identified the trend of IOP, incidence of OHTN, and its associated systemic or ocular factors. On average, IOP was highest at 2 months after IVD implantation.

Cluster of differentiation 93 (CD93) is a glycoprotein expressed in activated endothelial cells. The extracellular portion of CD93 can be secreted as a soluble form (sCD93) under inflammatory conditions. As diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a well-known inflammatory disease, we hypothesized that sCD93 would be a new biomarker for DN.

Persistent infection with high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer, the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. Two oncoproteins encoded by the HPV genome, E6 and E7, are required for epigenetic modifications that promote cervical cancer development. We found that knockdown of HPV E6/E7 by siRNA reduced the levels of ubiquitin-like containing PHD and RING finger domain 1 (UHRF1) but increased the levels of gelsolin (GSN) in early stage cervical cancer cells.
