Perceived duration of visual stimuli contracts due to crowding.

Recent research on duration perception suggests that duration encoding is not a single general process but involves several separate processes, some of which are specific to visual modality. Moreover, different functional aspects of visual processing can influence duration perception in distinct ways. One of the most important functions of the visual system is to identify and recognize features, shapes, and objects.

Illumination by short-wavelength light inside the blind spot decreases light detectability.

Although the optic disk corresponding to the blind spot contains no classical photoreceptors, it contains photopigment melanopsin. To clarify whether melanopsin is involved in light detection, we conducted detection tasks for light stimuli presented in the normal visual field, with and without another illumination inside the blind spot. We found that a blue blind-spot illumination decreased the light detectability on a dark background.

Mean computed tomography value to predict spread through air spaces in clinical N0 lung adenocarcinoma.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the ability of radiologic factors such as mean computed tomography (mCT) value, consolidation/tumor ratio (C/T ratio), solid tumor size, and the maximum standardized uptake (SUVmax) value by F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography to predict the presence of spread through air spaces (STAS) of lung adenocarcinoma.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 118 patients those diagnosed with clinically without lymph node metastasis and having a pathological diagnosis of adenocarcinoma after undergoing surgery. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was used to assess the ability to use mCT value, C/T ratio, tumor size, and SUVmax value to predict STAS.

Aftereffect of perceived motion trajectories.

If our visual system has a distinct computational process for motion trajectories, such a process may minimize redundancy and emphasize variation in object trajectories by adapting to the current statistics. Our experiments show that after adaptation to multiple objects traveling along trajectories with a common tilt, the trajectory of an object was perceived as tilting on the repulsive side. This trajectory aftereffect occurred irrespective of whether the tilt of the adapting stimulus was physical or an illusion from motion-induced position shifts and did not differ in size across the physical and illusory conditions.

Effects of binocular disparity on binocular luminance combination.

This study aimed to examine the effects of binocular disparity on binocular combination of brightness information coming from luminance increments and decrements. The point of subjective equality was determined by asking the observers to judge which stimulus appeared brighter-a bar stimulus with variable disparity or another stimulus with zero disparity. For the bar stimulus, the interocular luminance ratio was varied to trace an equal brightness curve.

The moment of awareness influences the content of awareness in orientation repulsion.

Through the neurally evolving process of dynamic contextual modulation of perceptual contents, it remains unclear how the content of awareness is determined. Here we quantified the visual illusion of orientation repulsion, wherein the target appears tilted against the surrounding's orientation, and examined whether its extent changed when the target awareness was quickened by a preceding flanker. Independently of spatial cueing, repulsion was reduced when the flanker preceded the target by 100 ms compared with when they appeared simultaneously.

Local motion signals silence the perceptual solution of global apparent motion.

Stimuli for apparent motion can have ambiguity in frame-to-frame correspondences among visual elements. This occurs when visual inputs cause a correspondence problem that allows multiple alternatives of perceptual solutions. Herein we examined the influence of local visual motions on a perceptual solution under such a multistable situation.

Downregulation of fascin induces collective cell migration in triple‑negative breast cancer.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common types of cancer affecting female patients. Triple‑negative BC (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype. Fascin, an actin‑bundling protein, serves a significant role in cancer metastasis.

Kimura disease forming a human polyomavirus 6-negative parotid gland nodule with prominent squamous metaplasia in a young female: A case report.

A case of an asymptomatic 19-year-old woman with Kimura disease presenting with a nodule in the right parotid gland is presented. She had a medical history of atopic dermatitis and noticed a mass on her right-side neck. Cervical lymphadenopathy was clinically diagnosed.

Detection of Merkel cell polyomavirus in multiple primary oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Oral microbiome studies have mainly focussed on bacteria, with the relationship between viruses and oral cancers remaining poorly understood. Oral cancers can develop even in the absence of any history of daily smoking or drinking. Oral cancer patients frequently have multiple primary cancers in the oral cavity and other organs, such as the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Effects of a fertility-sparing re-treatment for recurrent atypical endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer: a systematic literature review.

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of progestin re-treatment for recurrent endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia (EIN), atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AH) and endometrial cancer (EC) following initial fertility-sparing treatment.

Methods: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by an Expert Panel of the Japan Society of Gynecologic Oncology Endometrial Cancer Committee. Multiple search engines, including PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Database, were searched in December 2021 using the keywords "Endometrial neoplasms," "Endometrial hyperplasia," "Endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia," "Fertility preservation," "Progestins," AND "Recurrence.

EBV-positive pyothorax-associated lymphoma expresses CXCL9 and CXCL10 chemokines that attract cytotoxic lymphocytes via CXCR3.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma associated with chronic inflammation (DLBCL-CI) develops in the setting of long-standing inflammation. This type of lymphoma may have specific expression profiles of chemokines involved in the pathogenesis of DLBCL-CI. EBV-positive pyothorax-associated lymphoma (PAL) is a prototype of DLBCL-CI and represents a valuable model for the study of this disease category.

Temporal resolution and temporal extent of orientation repulsion.

A vertical target is perceived as tilted against a slightly tilted inducer surrounding it. To identify the temporal resolution and temporal extent of this phenomenon of orientation repulsion in the same paradigm, we used an alternating pair of inducer stimuli having complementary orientation distributions and quantified repulsion at various alternation frequencies. The duration of each inducer stimulus was inversely proportional to the frequency.

We often need to search for an object in a dynamic environment. However, there remains a limited understanding of search processes responding to dynamic inputs of stimuli, especially regarding the mid-level stages of our visual processing hierarchy. In this study, we investigated whether and to what extent search asymmetry is observed between a search for a directionally changing item among constantly drifting items and vice versa.

ECG Changes Through Immunosuppressive Therapy Indicate Cardiac Abnormality in Anti-MDA5 Antibody-Positive Clinically Amyopathic Dermatomyositis.

Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibody, a dermatomyositis (DM)-specific antibody, is strongly associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD). Patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) who are anti-MDA5 antibody positive [anti-MDA5 (+)] often experience chest symptoms during the active disease phase. These symptoms are primarily explained by respiratory failure; nevertheless, cardiac involvement can also be symptomatic.

Fascin expression persists with fibronectin in embryonic rat hepatoblasts.

Both fascin and fibronectin are known to play important roles in cell adhesion and migration. They are noted as tumor markers or inhibiting target for tumor treatment. In this study, embryonic rat livers were obtained to examine the expression of fascin and fibronectin during liver development.

Development of a novel cell line-derived xenograft model of primary herpesvirus 8-unrelated effusion large B-cell lymphoma and antitumor activity of birabresib in vitro and in vivo.

Background: Primary human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8)-unrelated effusion large B-cell lymphoma is a clinical disease entity distinct from HHV8-positive primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). However, the lack of experimental HHV8-unrelated effusion large B-cell lymphoma models continues to hinder the pathophysiologic and therapeutic investigations of this disorder.

Methods: The lymphoma cells were obtained from the pleural effusion of a patient with primary HHV8-unrelated effusion large B-cell lymphoma and cultured in vitro.

Influence of new coronavirus pandemic on behavior and awareness of young nurses and nursing students in Japan.

Background: Although mental health disorders of health care workers in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have been focused, little is known about the psychological impact on nurses and the influence on their behavior and awareness, such as professionalism and views on life and death, in Japan where there are fewer cases of infection and deaths than in other countries. Moreover, the influence of the pandemic on nursing students is still unclear.

Methods: An online questionnaire survey was conducted among nurses and nursing students.

Glucocorticoid-induced redistribution lymphocytosis in mantle cell lymphoma with hyaline vascular Castleman disease-like features.

We report a case of mantle cell lymphoma mimicking Castleman disease. A 76-year-old man presented with generalized lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, anemia, polyclonal gammopathy, and pulmonary infiltrations. Lymph node biopsy revealed histological features of hyaline vascular Castleman disease.

Intra-tumor and Inter-tumor Heterogeneity in MET Exon 14 Skipping Mutations and Co-mutations in Pulmonary Pleomorphic Carcinomas.

Background: MET exon 14 skipping mutation is a driver mutation in lung cancer and is highly enriched in pulmonary pleomorphic carcinomas (PPCs). Whether there is intratumor or intertumor heterogeneity in MET exon 14 skipping status or in co-occurring genetic alterations in lung cancers driven by MET exon 14 skipping is unknown.
