Antifungal stewardship (AFS) programs are key to optimizing antifungal use and improving outcomes in patients with invasive fungal infections. Our systematic literature review evaluated the impact of diagnostics in AFS programs by assessing performance and clinical measures. Most eligible studies were from Europe and the United States (n = 12/17).

The most frequent complications of post-mastectomy reconstructions are breast implant (BI) infection and capsular contracture (CC). The diagnosis of BI colonization is based on cultures from the sonicated BI and from the capsule tissue. Therefore, we first aimed to assess the yield of conventional culture and molecular techniques in periprosthetic fluid, in addition to BI and capsular tissue.

Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic agent applied in orthopedic surgery and has been proven to reduce post-surgery infection rates. We previously showed that TXA also had an additional direct antimicrobial effect against planktonic bacteria. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether it has a synergistic effect if in combination with antibiotics.

Flavor is among the most important traits valued by consumers of fresh fruits. Human perception of flavor occurs primarily through two main sensory inputs, taste and aroma. Through retronasal olfaction, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the fruit are able to produce the sensation of aroma which when combined with gustatory inputs from the tongue together underly our perception of the thousands of flavors we experience throughout our lives.

Article Synopsis
  • Infective endocarditis (IE) in patients aged 80 and over is linked to high rates of morbidity, mortality, and functional impairment, highlighting significant health risks in this age group.
  • A study analyzed data from 726 octogenarians with IE, revealing that nearly half had a high Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI ≥ 3) which strongly predicted increased in-hospital and 1-year mortality rates.
  • Surgical intervention was less frequently performed in patients with higher comorbidity, and those treated conservatively faced higher mortality rates compared to those who underwent surgery, indicating that surgical delay or underperformance may negatively impact outcomes.

The increase in the area cultivated with vitamin-enriched transgenic crops producing Bt toxin raises the question of whether the addition of vitamins will in any way mitigates the effect of the toxin on the phytophagous insects that feed on those crops. On the other hand, the parental effect that feeding on these enriched transgenic crops may have on the offspring of the phytophagous that survive on them is not well known. In this work, the effect of vitamin A (β-carotene) addition to diets with or without Bt toxin on Helicoverpa armigera larvae and their offspring was determined.

Infection caused by Monkeypox Virus (MPVX) has small rodents as its natural reservoir and both monkeys and humans are occasional hosts. The causative agent is an Orthopoxvirus (MPVX) that was isolated in monkeys in 1958 and proved capable of passing to humans in 1970. It remained contained in Africa, causing isolated episodes of infection, until 2003 when an outbreak occurred in the United States following importation of animals from that continent.

Objectives: This work compares the effectiveness of blind versus ultrasound (US)-guided injections for Morton neuroma (MN) up to 3 years of follow-up.

Methods: This is an evaluator-blinded randomised trial in which 33 patients with MN were injected by an experienced orthopaedic surgeon based on anatomical landmarks (blind injection, group 1) and 38 patients were injected by an experienced musculoskeletal radiologist under US guidance (group 2). Patients were assessed using the visual analogue scale and the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability index (MFPDI).

Aims: To identify biomarkers of cardiomyopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and to identify associations between functional status, metabolomic profile and myocardial fibrosis.

Methods: In this prospective case control study, patients (n = 49) with T2DM without significant coronary artery disease, and matched controls (n = 18) underwent CMR, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and plasma metabolomic analyses.

Results: Patients with T2DM (n = 49, median [interquartile range] age 61 [56-63] years, 61% male, diabetes duration 11 [7-20] years), historical HbA1c 7.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease that affects skin and multiple internal organs. TGF-β, a central trigger of cutaneous fibrosis, activates fibroblasts with the involvement of the stress-inducible chaperone heat shock protein 90 isoform α (Hsp90α). Available evidence supports overexpression and secretion of Hsp90α as a feature in profibrotic pathological conditions.

Pompe disease (PD) is a rare disorder caused by mutations in the acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) gene. Most gene therapies (GT) partially rely on the cross-correction of unmodified cells through the uptake of the GAA enzyme secreted by corrected cells. In the present study, we generated isogenic murine GAA-KO cell lines resembling severe mutations from Pompe patients.

Unlabelled: Gastrointestinal tract Candida genotypes may associate with isolates later causing infections. We genotyped Candida spp isolates (n = 200 individual colonies) from rectal swabs to assess whether gastrointestinal gut colonization is caused by a single genotype (monoclonal pattern) or a combination of them (polyclonal pattern). C.

Plum is a stone fruit that stands out for having a short shelf-life because of its high susceptibility to rapid deterioration. Part of this deterioration is explained by fruit overripening. Recently, the role of melatonin in delaying postharvest decay has been investigated but its regulatory function during overripening is still under extensive debate.

Introduction: infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in transplant patients.

Objective: a retrospective single-center study was performed to evaluate the implementation of an Antimicrobial Treatment Optimization Program (PROA) on multidrug-resistant bacteria colonization and infection after liver transplant (LT).

Methods: colonization by multidrug-resistant bacteria and infections during the first year after a liver transplant were analyzed in a group of 76 transplanted patients in two stages, before and after PROA (2016-2019).
