Switching of symbiotic partners pervades most mutualisms, despite mechanisms that appear to enforce partner fidelity. To investigate the interplay of forces binding and dissolving mutualistic pairings, we investigated partner fidelity at the population level in the attine ant-fungal cultivar mutualism. The ants and their cultivars exhibit both broad-scale co-evolution, as well as cultivar switching, with short-term symbiont fidelity maintained by vertical transmission of maternal garden inoculates via dispersing queens and by the elimination of alien cultivar strains.

Perakine reductase (PR) is a novel member of the aldo-keto reductase enzyme superfamily from higher plants. PR from the plant Rauvolfia serpentina is involved in the biosynthesis of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids by performing NADPH-dependent reduction of perakine, yielding raucaffrinoline. However, PR can also reduce cinnamic aldehyde and some of its derivatives.

Background: The fungus-growing ant-microbe symbiosis consists of coevolving microbial mutualists and pathogens. The diverse fungal lineages that these ants cultivate are attacked by parasitic microfungi of the genus Escovopsis. Previous molecular analyses have demonstrated strong phylogenetic congruence between the ants, the ants-cultivated fungi and the garden pathogen Escovopsis at ancient phylogenetic levels, suggesting coevolution of these symbionts.

We use a combination of microsatellite marker analysis and mate-choice behavior experiments to assess patterns of reproductive isolation of the túngara frog Physalaemus pustulosus along a 550-km transect of 25 populations in Costa Rica and Panama. Earlier studies using allozymes and mitochondrial DNA defined two genetic groups of túngara frogs, one ranging from Mexico to northern Costa Rica (northern group), the second ranging from Panama to northern South America (southern group). Our more fine-scale survey also shows that the northern and southern túngara frogs are genetically different and geographically separated by a gap in the distribution in central Pacific Costa Rica.

Increased small bowel epithelial cell apoptosis and decreased cell proliferation lead to impairment of gut mucosal integrity and function after thermal injury. Impairment of gut integrity is associated with increased bacterial translocation and incidence of sepsis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether IGF-I/IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 can improve small bowel homeostasis after injury and by which cellular mechanisms these changes occur and to identify changes in apoptosis-related genes after burn and the effect of bile acid on small bowel epithelial cell apoptosis after burn.

The fungus-growing ants have long provided a spectacular example of coevolutionary integration. Their ecological success is thought to depend largely on the evolutionary alignment of reproductive interests between ants and fungi after vertical transmission and the ancient suppression of fungal sexuality. The interleukin (IL)-12 family is composed of three heterodimeric cytokines, IL-12 (p40p35), IL-23 (p40p19), and IL-27 (EBI3p28), and of monomeric and homodimeric p40. This review focuses on the three heterodimeric members of the IL-12 family. The p40 and p40-like (EBI3) subunits have homology to the IL-6R, the other subunits (p35, p19, and p28) are homologous to each other and to members of the IL-6 superfamily.

Integrin-mediated adhesion regulates the development and function of a range of tissues; however, little is known about its role in glandular epithelium. To assess the contribution of beta1 integrin, we conditionally deleted its gene in luminal epithelia during different stages of mouse mammary gland development and in cultured primary mammary epithelia. Loss of beta1 integrin in vivo resulted in impaired alveologenesis and lactation.

Cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) within the amyloid-beta (Abeta) sequence by the alpha-secretase prevents the formation of toxic Abeta peptides. It has been shown that the disintegrin-metalloproteinases ADAM10 and TACE (ADAM17) act as alpha-secretases and stimulate the generation of a soluble neuroprotective fragment of APP, APPsalpha. Here we demonstrate that the related APP-like protein 2 (APLP2), which has been shown to be essential for development and survival of mice, is also a substrate for both proteinases.

Objective: A case study at the department for heart surgery of an Austrian University Hospital in 2001, examined the outcome of improved communication aimed at empowering patients to be more effective co-producers of recuperation after surgery.

Methods: Evaluated were the effects of a training program for developing communication skills of health professionals (physicians, physiotherapists, and nurses) along with a reorganization of patient information schemes. The clinical outcomes after four types of surgery (bypass, stent, artificial valve insertion and combination of these) were observed in 100 patients without (control group) and 99 with the intervention administered (intervention group).

Integrin-extracellular matrix interactions play important roles in the coordinated integration of external and internal cues that are essential for proper development. To study the role of beta1 integrin in the mammary gland, Itgbeta1(flox/flox) mice were crossed with WAPiCre transgenic mice, which led to specific ablation of beta1 integrin in luminal alveolar epithelial cells. In the beta1 integrin mutant mammary gland, individual alveoli were disorganized resulting from alterations in cell-basement membrane associations.

Individual longitudinal data are indispensable for studying the differential incidence of diseases and of possible chronic conditions, health care interventions and outcomes in the course of time, the effects of changing population structure on morbidity, the demand and use of health services, as well as the efficacy and efficiency of health care guidelines. Here, we present an up to date survey of panel studies in Germany, in so far as these are either still active or were completed only recently, and in so far as they are accessible via public use files or equivalent solutions for the scientific community. There are some health related items on existing general purpose national panel studies, but no health related representative national panel study.
