Purpose: The biaxial flexural strength and fracture toughness for 3 representative types of ceramic core materials were studied to (1) ascertain the ranking of the 3 ceramic types for strength and toughness, and (2) provide clinicians with more information to predict clinical outcomes. The former aim was deemed important in view of the importance of flaw size in the relationship between failure stress and fracture toughness of brittle materials.
Materials And Methods: The 3 representative ceramic types included a leucite-reinforced glass, a glass-infiltrated sintered alumina, and a high-purity, high-density alumina.

The discovery and cloning of the cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF) gave rise to new hopes for a significant victory in the war against cancer. Preclinical in vitro studies in cell cultures and in vivo studies in animal models demonstrated the antitumor capacities of TNF. Little is known about the extent to which physicians who design and/or implement clinical trials differ from physicians in routine practice in their translation of the literature.
Methods: Our aims were to (1) evaluate recent trends in selected treatments of AMI in relation to the publication of RCTs, statistical overviews, and task-force guidelines, and (2) compare prescribing practices in AMI management between physicians in routine clinical practice and physicians who design and/or implement RCTs.
Background: Bolus thrombolytic therapy is a simplified means of administering thrombolysis that facilitates rapid time to treatment. TNK-tissue plasminogen activator (TNK-tPA) is a highly fibrin-specific single-bolus thrombolytic agent.
Methods And Results: In TIMI 10B, 886 patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction presenting within 12 hours were randomized to receive either a single bolus of 30 or 50 mg TNK-tPA or front-loaded tPA and underwent immediate coronary angiography.
Purpose: To compare the prognostic impact of tumor angiogenesis factors (vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF], angiogenin, and basic fibroblast growth factor [bFGF]), tumor proteolysis factors (urokinase-type plasminogen activator [uPA] and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 [PAI-1]), and conventional tumor markers (stage, grade, and steroid receptors) in early breast cancer.
Patients And Methods: In the primary clinical study, tumor angiogenesis and other factors were detected in frozen biopsies from 305 primary breast tumors. VEGF expression was assessed by chemiluminescence immunosorbent assay (ICMA); angiogenin, bFGF, uPA, and PAI-1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); and steroid receptors (estrogen receptor [ER] and progesterone receptor [PgR]) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA).
Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common problem in men and women; however, men and women with similar clinical presentations of myocardial ischemia may receive different revascularization treatments.
Hypothesis: Using the data base of the Asymptomatic Cardiac Ischemia Pilot (ACIP) trial, this study was undertaken to compare by gender the baseline demographic data and the clinical outcome results in patients randomized to various treatments in the ACIP study.
Methods: This randomized trial compared three treatment regimens [pharmacologic management of angina, pharmacologic management of angina and ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) evidence of ischemia, and revascularization--that is, angioplasty and coronary artery bypass surgery], in patients with known CAD, positive stress ECG tests, and ECG evidence of ischemia during 48 h ambulatory monitoring.
A substantial percentage (30-70%) of human breast carcinomas that initially respond to endocrine therapy acquire resistance during the treatment. Many patients with tumor progression despite treatment with anti-estrogen tamoxifen show continued expression of estrogen receptors (ER) and/or progesterone receptors (PgR) in the relapse tissue. This indicates that, in these tumors, mechanisms other than loss of ER expression are responsible for treatment failure.
