This prospective, experimental, mixed study determined whether there were differences in intraosseous (IO) and intravenous (IV) whole blood transfusion relative to hemolysis and transfusion time. Swine were assigned to the IV group (n = 6) with an 18-gauge catheter in the auricular vein or the IO group (n = 7) with a 15-gauge 10 needle in the proximal humerus. Following baseline specimen collection, 900 mL of blood was collected from each animal.

This study demonstrates that the retention behavior of various circular double-stranded DNA molecules (3, 5, and 10 kb) increases over the entire flow-rate range (0.02-1.8 mL/min) at all the mobile phase viscosities (h).

The mechanism of the binding of D,L dansyl amino acids to teicoplanin was investigated. Na+ was used as an indicator of the interactions between the solutes and teicoplanin. The number (n) of sodium ions, Na+, excluded from the solute-teicoplanin interface when analyte transfer occurred was determined.

Given the often reported relationships between sleep-wake regulation and the cerebral prostaglandins (PGs), the effect of chronic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation on brain PGE2 and PGD2 biosynthesis in mouse was evaluated, since they are known to have opposite actions as respectively wake- and sleep-inducing substances. Mice were subjected to 5 and 10 days of REM sleep deprivation by the flower pot technique. After sacrifice, PGE2 and PGD2 were determined in the pituitary, hypothalamus and hippocampus.

Do the personality styles of dentists significantly influence their sense of well-being in their profession? A recent study using the Bi/Polar Inventory of Core Strengths differentiated 218 Texas dentists into eight personality profiles. Patterns VII and V (both risking and practical) as a group reported significantly higher self-esteem, higher ability to cope with stress, lower psychological distress, higher satisfaction with dentistry, and greater likelihood of choosing dentistry again as a career, than did Patterns III and IV (both thinking and theoretical). The results suggest that Patterns VII and V may be the most compatible with dentistry, and Patterns III and IV the least compatible.

Are individuals with certain personality styles uniquely attracted to dentistry? A recent study with 218 Texas dentists using the Bi/Polar Inventory of Core Strengths showed that the dentists were more thinking (57.3%) than risking, profoundly more practical (78.0%) than theoretical, and more independent (67.

The mass density normalized absorption and total scattering coefficients have been measured using in situ techniques at selected wavelengths from the visible to approximately 1 cm for soot generated by the open combustion of diesel fuel. Particle morphologies are complex although similar to those of soots of other hydrocarbons and methods of generation. An ellipsoidal model has been applied as an approximation to the often multiconnected, chainlike aerosol and then compared with the measured results.

The renal toxicity of combined administration of cyclosporin and aminoglycosides was evaluated in rats. Increasing doses of amikacin (A) or gentamicin (G) were injected alone or in association with cyclosporin (CS). Creatinine clearance rate, urinary N-acetyl-Beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity and NAG-B isoenzyme level were determined to evaluate glomerular or tubular dysfunctions.

The Bi/Polar Inventory of Core Strength was administered to two senior dental classes. This inventory identifies preferences on three fundamental underlying dimensions of personality and yields eight personality patterns, which were subsequently correlated with the students' self-assessment of various aspects of the dental school experience. Individuals with preferences for risking, practical thinking, and independence consistently demonstrated higher self-esteem, higher ability to cope with the stresses of dental school, lower psychological distress in dental school, and higher satisfaction with dentistry than individuals with polar opposite preferences--thinking, theoretical thinking, and dependence--although only some of these comparisons reached statistical significance.

Our study indicates that amikacin (AK) inhibited urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed significant increase of Michaelis constant of urinary NAG, in human and in rat, treated by amikacin. Our data indicate that the inhibition of amikacin on NAG and its isoenzymes was "apparently competitive" rather than competitive as reported by others.

Lysosomal enzyme activities can be modified by aminoglycosides. In this study, we have investigated the "in vitro" effect of gentamicin (G), tobramycin (T), dibekacin (D), netilmicin (N) and amikacin (AK) on urinary N-acétyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) and its isoenzymatic forms. G, D and N are activators of this enzyme, specifically of the B isoenzymatic form, while T inhibits slightly the A, I1 and I2 forms.
