Background And Purpose: Arts-based interventions are an emerging area of interest in health research for older adults. Music and Movement for Health (MMH) is one such systematically developed interdisciplinary arts-based intervention designed to enhance health and wellbeing of older adults. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the opinions and experiences of participants, facilitators, and community stakeholders of the MMH intervention.

The evaluation of video-assisted debriefing for improving performance in simulated medical student resuscitations.

Objectives: Simulation-based training is commonly used in medical education. However, there is a gap in knowledge regarding best practices in debriefing. We aimed to identify novel solutions to this by adapting video-assisted debriefing (VAD) methodologies used in athletic training.

Objective: There is a research gap on the impact of payment, reimbursement, and academic productivity in career decision-making for early-career (EC) attendings in gynecologic oncology. We sought to assess gynecologic oncology fellows and EC attendings on their knowledge and perceptions regarding the business of medicine.

Methods: An anonymous survey was electronically disseminated to fellow and EC SGO members.

Improving Cancer Care for Women Seeking Services in the Veterans Health Administration Through the Breast and Gynecological Oncology System of Excellence.

Women are the fastest growing population among Veterans and have substantial risk factors that increase their likelihood for developing cancer. To ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers the best possible cancer care to women Veterans, it established the Breast and Gynecologic Oncology System of Excellence (BGSoE) in 2021. The BGSoE offers telehealth oncology services and a comprehensive cancer navigation program.

Geographic and racial disparities in the quality of surgical care among patients with nonmetastatic uterine cancer.

Background: Although the rates of minimally invasive surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy have increased considerably over time in the surgical management of early-stage uterine cancer, practice varies significantly in the United States, and there are disparities among low-volume centers and patients of Black race. A significant number of counties in the United States are without a gynecologic oncologist, and almost half of the counties with the highest gynecologic cancer rates lack a local gynecologic oncologist.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationships of distance traveled and proximity to gynecologic oncologists with the receipt of and racial disparities in the quality of surgical care among patients who underwent a hysterectomy for nonmetastatic uterine cancer.

Objective: Hydrocephalus is a challenging neurosurgical condition due to nonspecific symptoms and complex brain-fluid pressure dynamics. Typically, the assessment of hydrocephalus in children requires radiographic or invasive pressure monitoring. There is usually a qualitative focus on the ventricular spaces even though stress and shear forces extend across the brain.

Integrative Review of Music and Music Therapy Interventions on Functional Outcomes in Children with Acquired Brain Injury.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) can result in a multitude of impairments to physical, cognitive, communicative, psychological, and psychosocial functioning. Music interventions are emerging as a valuable form of intervention in the rehabilitation of children with ABI, stimulating brain functions involved in movement, cognition, speech, emotions, and sensory perceptions. To date, the literature detailing the impact of music and music therapy interventions on functional outcomes in children with ABI has not been reviewed systematically.

The Landscape of Care for Women Veterans with Cancer: An Evidence Map.

Background: Women are the fastest growing veteran group in the US and the number of women veterans (WVs) with cancer is rising; however, little is known about this population. Cancer care for WVs is complex and it is essential to understand their unique needs and care coordination challenges to provide evidence-based care. The purpose of this review is to map the quantity, distribution, and characteristics of literature describing cancer and its treatment among WVs.

Application of novel non-invasive ophthalmic imaging to visualize peripapillary wrinkles, retinal folds and peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures associated with elevated intracranial pressure.

Background: Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, for which clinically useful non-invasive measures have been elusive, in some cases due to their inadequate sensitivity and specificity. Our aim was to evaluate novel non-invasive ophthalmic imaging of selected pathological features seen in elevated ICP, namely peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS), peripapillary wrinkles (PPW) and retinal folds (RF) as potential biomarkers of elevated ICP.

Methods: This single-center pilot study included subjects with untreated or incompletely treated high ICP.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation may benefit from the addition of N-acetylcysteine to facilitate motor learning in infants of diabetic mothers failing oral feeds.

Objective: This study aims to determine if pretreating with enteral N-acetylcysteine (NAC) improves CNS oxidative stress and facilitates improvement in oromotor skills during transcutaneous auricular nerve stimulation (taVNS) paired with oral feedings in infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) who are failing oral feeds.

Methods: We treated 10 IDMs who were gastrostomy tube candidates in an open-label trial of NAC and taVNS paired with oral feeding. NAC (75 or 100 mg/kg/dose) was given by nasogastric (NG) administration every 6 h for 4 days, then combined with taVNS paired with 2 daily feeds for another 14 days.

PyDesigner v1.0: A Pythonic Implementation of the DESIGNER Pipeline for Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

PyDesigner is a Python-based software package based on the original Diffusion parameter EStImation with Gibbs and NoisE Removal (DESIGNER) pipeline (Dv1) for dMRI preprocessing and tensor estimation. This software is openly provided for non-commercial research and may not be used for clinical care. PyDesigner combines tools from FSL and MRtrix3 to perform denoising, Gibbs ringing correction, eddy current motion correction, brain masking, image smoothing, and Rician bias correction to optimize the estimation of multiple diffusion measures.

ACO leakage among gynecologic cancer patients: Incidence, predictors, and impact on annual Medicare expenditure.

Objective: To examine patterns of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) leakage, the receipt of healthcare by ACO-assigned patients from institutions outside assigned ACO network, among patients with gynecologic cancer. ACO leakage was estimated as rates of patients seeking care external to their ACO assignment. Factors associated with ACO leakage were identified and cost differences within the first year of cancer diagnosis described.

Review of evidence for treatments of acute non arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Objective: To review treatment modalities that have been studied in acute non arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Methods: We performed a comprehensive literature search of English language publications in the last 5 years, with human species and NAION. Articles were reviewed to identify those that described original research on treatment of acute NAION.

Congressional Expansion of Enhancing Breast Cancer Screening and Care at the Veterans Health Administration.

Despite high screening rates, breast cancer disparities persist among women veterans because of occupational risks and barriers to access. Three essential bills recently passed in Congress seek to expand access to breast cancer screenings and cancer care within the Veterans Health Administration. The Making Advances in Mammography and Medical Options for Veterans Act expands screening via partnerships with the National Cancer Institute, integrating telescreening and upgrading imaging technology.

Introduction: Generation Z learners are entering emergency medicine (EM) residency training, bringing unique learning preferences that influence their engagement with residency education. To optimally teach and motivate this incoming generation of learners, EM educators must understand and adapt to the changing instructional landscape.

Methodology: The Simulation Leaders Advancing the Next Generation in Emergency Medicine (SLANG-EM) Workgroup was created to identify effective educational strategies for Generation Z learners entering EM.

Background: Simulation-based procedural practice is crucial to emergency medicine skills training and maintenance. However, many commercial procedural models are either nonexistent or lacking in key elements. Simulationists often create their own novel models with minimal framework for designing, building, and validation.

Effectiveness of a virtual reality trainer for retention of tourniquet application skills for hemorrhage control among emergency medicine residents.

Background: With a rise in mass casualty incidents, training in hemorrhage control using tourniquets has been championed as a basic-and lifesaving-procedure for bystanders and medical professionals alike. The current standard for training is in-person (IP) courses, which can be limited based on instructor availability. Virtual reality (VR) has demonstrated the potential to improve the accuracy of certain medical tasks but has not yet been developed for hemorrhage control.

Validity of Administrative Coding for Nonarteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

Background: Administrative claims have been used to study the incidence and outcomes of nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), but the validity of International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes for identifying NAION has not been examined.

Methods: We identified patients at 3 academic centers who received ≥1 ICD-10 code for NAION in 2018. We abstracted the final diagnosis from clinical documentation and recorded the number of visits with an NAION diagnosis code.

A Comparative Study of Large Language Models, Human Experts, and Expert-Edited Large Language Models to Neuro-Ophthalmology Questions.

Background: While large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in medicine, their effectiveness compared with human experts remains unclear. This study evaluates the quality and empathy of Expert + AI, human experts, and LLM responses in neuro-ophthalmology.

Methods: This randomized, masked, multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 2023.

Acute Optic Neuropathy in Older Adults: Differentiating Between MOGAD Optic Neuritis and Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

Background And Objectives: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease optic neuritis (MOGAD-ON) and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) can cause acute optic neuropathy in older adults but have different managements. We aimed to determine differentiating factors between MOGAD-ON and NAION and the frequency of serum MOG-IgG false positivity among patients with NAION.

Methods: In this international, multicenter, case-control study at tertiary neuro-ophthalmology centers, patients with MOGAD presenting with unilateral optic neuritis as their first attack at age 45 years or older and age-matched and sex-matched patients with NAION were included.
