Reports of deaths are an exaggeration: all-cause and NAA-test-conditional mortality in Germany during the SARS-CoV-2 era.

Counts of SARS-CoV-2-related deaths have been key numbers for justifying severe political, social and economical measures imposed by authorities world-wide. A particular focus thereby was the concomitant excess mortality (EM), i.e.

In humans, compressive stress on intervertebral discs is commonly deployed as a measurand for assessing the loads that act within the spine. Examining this physical quantity is crucially beneficial: the intradiscal pressure can be directly measured in humans, and is immediately related to compressive stress. Hence, measured intradiscal pressure data are very useful for validating such biomechanical animal models that have the spine incorporated, and can, thus, compute compressive stress values.

Loads distributed in vivo among vertebrae, muscles, spinal ligaments, and intervertebral discs in a passively flexed lumbar spine.

The load distribution among lumbar spinal structures-still an unanswered question-has been in the focus of this hybrid experimental and simulation study. First, the overall passive resistive torque-angle characteristics of healthy subjects' lumbar spines during flexion-extension cycles in the sagittal plane were determined experimentally by use of a custom-made trunk-bending machine. Second, a forward dynamic computer model of the human body that incorporates a detailed lumbar spine was used to (1) simulate the human-machine interaction in accordance with the experiments and (2) validate the modeled properties of the load-bearing structures.

Lumbar posture and muscular activity while sitting during office work.

Purpose: Field study, cross-sectional study to measure the posture and sEMG of the lumbar spine during office work for a better understanding of the lumbar spine within such conditions.

Scope: There is high incidence of low back pain in office workers. Currently there is little information about lumbar posture and the activity of lumbar muscles during extended office work.

Pain relief due to physiotherapy doesn't change the motor function of the shoulder.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of different training methods in physiotherapy on pain relief and change in proprioception and kinesthesia of the shoulder. Further, the connections between pain relief and change in motor function of the shoulder will be investigated.

Interaction of beta-blockers with the renal uptake transporter OCT2.

Aim: The uptake of drugs from the blood into the renal tubular cells is a key determinant for renal secretion and may influence their systemic plasma concentrations and extrarenal effects. Metformin, used for treatment of type 2 diabetes, is taken up into renal tubular cells by the organic cation transporter 2 (OCT2). Because many patients with type 2 diabetes receiving metformin are concomitantly treated with beta-blockers, we tested whether beta-blockers can inhibit OCT2-mediated drug transport.

Musculoskeletal support of lumbar spine stability.

Using a biomechanical model and experimental data the self-stabilising behaviour of antagonistic trunk muscles was analyzed. The biomechanical model is constituted of a pair of antagonistic Hill-type muscles, their geometric arrangement with respect to the spine, and the instantaneous centre of rotation in frontal plane. Using Ljapunov's theory, the stability of certain motion and loading situations was analyzed.

Three-dimensional relation of skin markers to lumbar vertebrae of healthy subjects in different postures measured by open MRI.

The debate is to which extent external skin markers represent true underlying vertebral position and motion. Skin markers and lumbar vertebrae L3 and L4 were examined by vertically open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within different postures to investigate whether, and to which extent the position and orientation of skin markers represent the corresponding information of assigned underlying vertebra. Nine healthy volunteers sat within an open MRI scanner in five different seating postures: upright, low flexion, heavy flexion, upright left turn and upright right turn.

Stimulation of GABAB receptors increases the expression of the proenkephalin gene in slice cultures of rat neocortex.

In rat neocortex the proenkephalin gene is expressed in GABAergic interneurons. Immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridisation show only a small number of cells in layers II to VI which express the gene. In organotypic slices of rat neocortex, the GABAA receptor inhibitor bicuculline methiodide enhances the expression of the gene in numerous cells.

Intrinsic GABA neurons inhibit proenkephalin gene expression in slice cultures of rat neostriatum.

In the neostriatum, the proenkephalin gene is expressed in medium spiny GABA neurons, which project to the globus pallidus. The expression is activated by glutamatergic projections from the neocortex via NMDA receptors. In these experiments we have used slice cultures of rat neostriatum to study the role of GABA in proenkephalin gene expression.

Evidence for cell specific regulation by PACAP38 of the proenkephalin gene expression in neocortical cells.

During the first postnatal week, glial cell production for the neocortex continues in the neocortical subventricular zone. During this time, the proenkephalin gene (PEnk) is expressed in numerous cells of the subventricular zone and of the adjacent neocortex. [Abdominal complications after heart surgery interventions].

[Spontaneous liver rupture in eclampsia].

We report on a case of a 34-year old nullipara who suffered from rupture of the liver during eclampsia and survived despite most serious complications. Most cases of rupture of a non-traumatic subcapsular haematoma of the liver during pregnancy are associated with symptoms of pre-eclampsia. The pathogenesis of this severe complication as well as diagnostic imaging and surgical treatment are discussed.
