Hantaan virus (HTNV) and Puumala virus (PUUV) are rodent-borne hantaviruses that are the primary causes of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia. The development of well characterized animal models of HTNV and PUUV infection is critical for the evaluation and the potential licensure of HFRS vaccines and therapeutics. Dynamic self-organized structures with long-range order have been observed in emulsions and suspensions of particles under confined flows. Here, experiments on red blood cell suspensions under quasi-2D confined flows and numerical simulations were combined to explore long-distance self-organization as a function of the channel width, red blood cell concentration and flow rate. They reveal and quantitatively describe the existence of red blood cell long-range alignments and heterogeneous cross-stream concentration profiles characterized by red blood cell-enriched bands parallel to the flow.

Surface-attached bacterial communities called biofilms display a diversity of morphologies. Although structural and regulatory components required for biofilm formation are known, it is not understood how these essential constituents promote biofilm surface morphology. Here, using as our model system, we combine mechanical measurements, theory and simulation, quantitative image analyses, surface energy characterizations, and mutagenesis to show that mechanical instabilities, including wrinkling and delamination, underlie the morphogenesis program of growing biofilms.

The cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying senile osteoporosis remain poorly understood. In this study, transgenic mCol1α1-Pitx1 mice overexpressing paired-like homeodomain 1 (PITX1), a homeobox transcription factor, rapidly develop a severe type-II osteoporotic phenotype with significant reduction in bone mass and biomechanical strength similar to that seen in humans and reminiscent of the phenotype previously observed in Sca-1 (Ly6a)-null mice. PITX1 plays a critical role in hind limb formation during fetal development, while loss of expression is associated with primary knee/hip osteoarthritis in aging humans.

The facial artery did not give rise to branches that led to the submandibular gland; an artery arising directly from the external carotid artery vascularized the submandibular gland and gave rise to the ascending palatine artery that led to the maxilla.

We showed previously that during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the envelope glycoprotein (Env) of HIV-1, and in particular, the gp120 subunit, evolved toward an increased resistance to neutralizing antibodies at a population level. Here, we considered whether the antigenic evolution of the HIV-1 Env is associated with modifications of its functional properties, focusing on cell entry efficacy and interactions with the receptor and coreceptors. We demonstrate edge-emitting exciton-polariton (polariton) laser operation from 5 to 300 K and polariton amplifiers based on polariton modes within ZnO waveguides. The guided mode dispersion below and above the lasing threshold is directly measured using gratings placed on top of the sample, fully demonstrating the polaritonic nature of the lasing modes. The threshold is found to be smaller than that expected for radiative polaritons in planar ZnO microcavities below 150 K and comparable above.
