Where in the World? Creating a Map Application to Support Nursing Students.

Successful completion of professional experience placement is a key factor for student progress through pre-licensure nursing programmes and subsequent registration as a nurse. Professional experience placement can be a time when students feel the impact of intersectional challenges, and is a point in which attrition occurs. A regional university partnered with their spatial analysis unit to create a customised, interactive, digital map application to support students undertaking professional experience placement.

Questionnaire format of modified frailty index as a predictor for 30-day readmission and length of stay in elderly patients undergoing multi-level lumbar interbody fusion.

Background: Frailty is a spectrum describing a demographic more likely to experience adverse events such as falls, disability, and hospital admission which can be quantified by the modified frailty index (mFI). Several studies have associated increased mFI score with higher rates of hospital readmission and length of stay (LOS). This study tests the predictive value of a frailty questionnaire based on the mFI on LOS and 30-day readmission rates.

The ZFHX3 GGC Repeat Expansion Underlying Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 4 has a Common Ancestral Founder.

Background: The identification of a heterozygous exonic GGC repeat expansion in ZFHX3 underlying spinocerebellar ataxia type 4 (SCA4) has solved a 25-year diagnostic conundrum. We used adaptive long-read sequencing to decipher the pathogenic expansion in the index Utah family and an unrelated family from Iowa of Swedish ancestry. Contemporaneous to our discovery, other groups identified the same repeat expansion in affected individuals from Utah, Sweden, and Germany, highlighting the current pivotal time for detection of novel repeat expansion disorders.

An Evolutionary Concept Analysis of Spiritual Competence in Nursing.

Aims: Clarify the concept of spiritual competence in the context of nursing through evidence-based extraction of attributes, antecedents and consequences.

Methods: Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis guided this analysis, and we followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews.

Background: Frailty is defined as a state in which depletion of physiologic reserves causes multisystem impairments independent of natural senescence. This phenomenon can be quantified by the 11-point modified frailty index (mFI-11). This study determines whether an 11-point patient questionnaire developed from the mFI-11 can be used as a predictor for discharge destination following multilevel lumbar interbody fusion surgery in elderly patients.

Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Melanoma Nodal Surveillance in a Multi-institutional Cohort.

Background: Nodal surveillance (NS) has overtaken completion lymphadenectomy as the preferred management for sentinel node-positive (SLN+) melanoma, but requires frequent exams and nodal ultrasound (US). Social determinants of health (SDoH) may affect US adherence in real-world populations, and evaluation of these potential impacts is needed.

Methods: Adults with SLN+ melanoma diagnosed from July 2017 to December 2019 who received NS at nine cancer centers were identified retrospectively.

Aggregation of microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT/tau) into conformationally distinct fibrils underpins neurodegenerative tauopathies. Fluorescent probes (fluoroprobes), such as thioflavin T (ThT), have been essential tools for studying tau aggregation; however, most of them do not discriminate between amyloid fibril conformations (polymorphs). This gap is due, in part, to a lack of high-throughput methods for screening large, diverse chemical collections.

A Quality Approach to Blinatumomab Delivery in Pediatric Oncology: A Children's Oncology Group Study.

Blinatumomab is a promising immunotherapy agent that has been shown to improve survival outcomes in children diagnosed with relapsed B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Expanded use of blinatumomab in the treatment of childhood cancer is expected; however, clinician perspectives regarding administering this agent in healthcare and home settings have not been explored. Semistructured interviews were conducted with clinicians ( = 13) from pediatric institutions across the United States and Canada.

Curricular initiatives for dementia education.

Dementia education can be an effective pedagogical tool to improve student perceptions of dementia and dementia care. In this article, we describe four evidence-based educational initiatives implemented in an undergraduate and graduate level social work course. Students participated in an informational presentation on dementia, a dementia simulation, and a virtual discussion board.

Common patient-reported sources of cancer-related distress in adults with cancer: A systematic review.

Background: Cancer-related distress (CRD) is widely experienced by people with cancer and is associated with poor outcomes. CRD screening is a recommended practice; however, CRD remains under-treated due to limited resources targeting unique sources (problems) contributing to CRD. Understanding which sources of CRD are most commonly reported will allow allocation of resources including equipping healthcare providers for intervention.

Background: With nodal surveillance increasingly used for sentinel lymph node-positive (SLN+) melanoma following the Second Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial (MSLT-II), high-quality nodal ultrasonography (U/S) has become a critical need. Previous work has demonstrated low utilization of MSLT-II U/S criteria to define abnormal lymph nodes requiring intervention or biopsy. Drugs of abuse activate defined neuronal ensembles in brain reward structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which are thought to promote the enduring synaptic, circuit, and behavioral consequences of drug exposure. While the molecular and cellular effects arising from experience with drugs like cocaine are increasingly well understood, the mechanisms that sculpt NAc ensemble participation are largely unknown. Here, we leveraged unbiased single-nucleus transcriptional profiling to identify expression of the secreted glycoprotein Reelin (encoded by the gene) as a marker of cocaine-activated neuronal ensembles within the rat NAc.
