The main objective of this study was to assess the histological changes of colon ephitelium in Cebus apella induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) administration. Twelve monkeys, males, (aged x: 30 months) with an average body weight of 2,800 g were utilized. The DMH was injected subcutaneously at 25 mg/kg and continued once a week for 16 weeks.

Cefuroxime selective electrodes for batch and FIA determinations in pharmaceutical preparations.

Different cefuroxime selective electrodes, without internal reference solution and comprising PVC membranes, were constructed and evaluated. Membranes were prepared with cefuroxime tetraoctylammonium (A) or cefuroxime bis(triphenylphosphoranylidene)ammonium (B) as ion-exchanger, 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (X) or bis(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate (Y) as plasticizing mediator solvent and 4-tert-otcylphenol (TOP) as additive. From the comparative evaluation of the described electrodes, membranes comprising 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether, cefuroxime tetraoctylammonium and 4-tert-otcylphenol presented better working characteristics.

An histological and histochemical study analyzing cell density and distribution of extracellular matrix (ECM) components in two stages of developing secondary palate and in two strains of mice with different H-2 backgrounds was undertaken to investigate differences between a strain that is susceptible to glucocorticoid-induced cleft palate (A/Sn) and one that is resistant (C57/BL). In addition, the influence of dexamethasone treatment on ECM components was evaluated. A/Sn strain had significantly higher mesenchymal cell density compared to C57/BL at 13 days of gestation when the palatine processes are in vertical position.

We have previously shown the existence of a novel peripheral reflex inhibitorily modulating the vas deferens sympathetic activity. An interaction between noradrenergic and histamine-containing neurons is involved in this reflex. As an overall mechanism of sympathetic autoregulation, we found that enhanced sympathetic activity in the rat during the stress induced by brief inescapable footshocks caused a marked rise of blood histamine that was seemingly dependent upon sympathetic activity.

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the causative agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), was first isolated from armadillos from the Amazonian region where the mycosis is uncommon. In the present study, we report on the high incidence of PCM infection in armadillos from a hyperendemic region of the disease. Four nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) were captured in the endemic area of Botucatu, Sao Paulo, Brazil, killed by manual cervical dislocation and autopsied under sterile conditions.

Isolation of fungi from nature in the region of Botucatu, state of São Paulo, Brazil, an endemic area of paracoccidioidomycosis.

In an attempt to isolate Paracoccidioides brasiliensis from nature 887 samples of soil from Botucatu, SP, Brazil, were collected cultured in brain heart infusion agar supplemented with dextrose, in potato dextrose agar and in yeast extract starch dextrose agar, all with antibiotics, at 25 degrees and 37 degrees C. Five thermo-dependent dimorphic fungi morphologically resembling P. brasiliensis were isolated; two from armadillo holes; further studies of the biology, antigenicity and genetic features of the five dimorphic fungi are necessary to clarify their taxonomy and their possible relation to P.

A flow injection (FI) analytical method for the simultaneous assay of nitrite, nitrate and chloride in meat products is reported. The method is based on the potentiometric determination of chloride using a tubular ISE and on the spectrophotometric determination of nitrite. The FI system consisted in splitting the flow after potentiometric detection using a tubular detector and the subsequent confluence of the flow before reaching the spectrophotometric detector.

An electrochemical method for the determination of residual styrene in polystyrene.

A rapid electroanalytical method for the determination of residual styrene in polystyrene is described. The sample of polymer was dissolved in toluene and, following the addition of 10% DMF and electrolyte, a square-wave voltammogram was recorded at a gold microdisc electrode (radius, 6 mum). A standard addition technique was used to relate the peak current to the styrene concentration in solution and, hence, the styrene content of the polymer.

The hamster cheek pouch: an immunologically privileged site suitable to the study of granulomatous infections.

The hamster cheek pouch is an invagination of oral mucosa, characterized histologically as skin-like. In this paper we describe anatomical, histological and embriological features of the pouch and comment on the pouch as an immunologically privileged site since it lacks lymphatic drainage and has few Langerhans cells. We present the review from literature and our observations after inoculation in the pouch of mycobacteriae (BCG, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae) and a fungus (Paracoccidioides brasiliensis).
