This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts from juçara fruits (Euterpe edulis Martius) through measurement of nitric oxide (NOx) and cytokines (IL-12p70, TNF-α, INF-γ, MCP-1, IL-6, and IL-10). J774 macrophages were stimulated with lipopolysaccharides (1 µg/mL) and treated with various concentrations (1-100 µg/mL) of juçara fruits extracts from crude extracts, and hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions. Potential relationships between the phenolic composition of the extracts determined by LC-ESI-MS/MS and their anti-inflammatory capacity were also evaluated.

Primary studies have demonstrated that despite being useful, most of the drug-drug interaction (DDI) alerts generated by clinical decision support systems are overridden by prescribers. To provide more information about this issue, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of DDI alerts generated by CDSS and alert overrides by physicians. The search strategy was implemented by applying the terms and MeSH headings and conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases.

The hematophagous common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is not known to transmit human pathogens outside laboratory settings, having evolved various immune defense mechanisms including the expression of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). We unveil three novel prolixicin AMPs in bed bugs, exhibiting strong homology to the prolixicin of kissing bugs, Rhodnius prolixus, and to diptericin/attacin AMPs. We demonstrate for the first time sex-specific and immune mode-specific upregulation of these prolixicins in immune organs, the midgut and rest of body, following injection and ingestion of Gr+ (Bacillus subtilis) and Gr- (Escherichia coli) bacteria.

Larval net-spinning caddisflies (Hydropsychidae) function as ecosystem engineers in streams where they construct protective retreats composed of organic and inorganic material affixed with silk filtration nets that alter streambed hydrology. We hypothesized that hydropsychid bio-structures (retreats, nets) are microhabitats for microbes with oxygen-sensitive metabolisms, and therefore increase the metabolic heterogeneity of streambed microbial assemblages. Metagenomic and 16 S rRNA gene amplicon analysis of samples from a montane stream (Cherry Creek, Montana, USA) revealed that microbiomes of caddisfly bio-structures are taxonomically and functionally distinct from those of the immediately adjacent rock biofilm (~2 cm distant) and enriched in microbial taxa with established roles in denitrification, nitrification, and methane production.

Prolonged inflammatory expression within the central nervous system (CNS) is recognized by the brain as a molecular signal of "sickness", that has knock-on effects to the blood-brain barrier, brain-spinal barrier, blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, neuro-axonal structures, neurotransmitter activity, synaptic plasticity, neuroendocrine function, and resultant systemic symptomatology. It is concurred that the inflammatory process associated with cancer and cancer treatments underline systemic symptoms present in a large portion of survivors, although this concept is largely theoretical from disparate and indirect evidence and/or clinical anecdotal reports. We conducted a proof-of-concept study to link for the first time late non-CNS cancer survivors presenting chronic systemic symptoms and the presence of centralized inflammation, or neuroinflammation, using TSPO-binding PET tracer [ C]-PBR28 to visualize microglial activation.
