Background/aim: To assess the QOL in rectal cancer patients after preventative anal operation and to discuss the influence of age on perceived quality of life.

Methodology: A prospective study of 342 patients with rectal cancer from May 2011 to January 2012 in the gastrointestinal surgery department was randomly selected and divided into the elderly group and the young group, and the differences in their QOL assessed by the questionnaire QLQ-C30, after preventative anal surgery (7 days) were compared.

Results: A total of 207 patients met the study criteria and were divided into the elderly group (≥60 years, 107 cases) and the young group (<60 years, 100 cases).

Objective: To explore the clinical application and experience of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) diluted autologous transfusion so as to provide clinical rationales for blood conservation.

Methods: At Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital, Zhengzhou University, the clinical data were reviewed for 5000 CPB surgical patients without banked blood from September 1996 to March 2012 to analyze the clinical application of autologous blood transfusion and summarize the experience of depth hemodilution. In this work, we demonstrated a silicon nanowire (SiNW) biosensing platform capable of simultaneously identifying different Dengue serotypes on a single sensing chip. Four peptide nucleic acids (PNAs), specific to each Dengue serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4), were spotted on different areas of the SiNW array surface, and the covalently immobilized PNA probes were then interacted with different Dengue serotypes target to establish the specificity of detection. Aim: To investigate the effect of endogenous n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on bone marrow adipogenesis under osteoporosis conditions.

Methods: A mouse osteoporosis model overexpressing the FAT1 gene from Caenorhabditis elegans and converting n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs endogenously was used.

Results: The mice presented significantly lower bone marrow adiposity (adipocyte volume/tissue volume, mean adipocyte number) but increased the bone parameters (bone mineral density, bone mineral content, bone volume/total volume) in the distal femoral metaphysis.

Altered glycosylation is a hallmark of cancer. The core 1 β1,3-galactosyltransferase (C1GALT1) controls the formation of mucin-type O-glycans, far overlooked and underestimated in cancer. Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is a natural enzyme involved in the metabolic activation of many carcinogens, and the functional polymorphisms in the CYP2E1 gene might have impacts on colorectal cancer risk.
