Genetic Divergence in Domestic Japanese Quail Inferred from Mitochondrial DNA D-Loop and Microsatellite Markers.

To assess the genetic diversity of domestic Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) populations, and their genetic relationships, we examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequences and microsatellite markers for 19 Japanese quail populations. The populations included nine laboratory lines established in Japan (LWC, Quv, RWN, WE, AWE, AMRP, rb-TKP, NIES-L, and W), six meat-type quail lines reimported from Western countries (JD, JW, Estonia, NIES-Br, NIES-Fr, and NIES-Hn), one commercial population in Japan, and three wild quail populations collected from three Asian areas. The phylogenetic tree of mtDNA D-loop sequences revealed two distinct haplotype groups, Dloop-Group1 and Dloop-Group2.

Reliability and Validity of Kinetic and Kinematic Parameters Determined With Force Plates Embedded Under a Soil-Filled Baseball Mound.

We developed a force measurement system in a soil-filled mound for measuring ground reaction forces (GRFs) acting on baseball pitchers and examined the reliability and validity of kinetic and kinematic parameters determined from the GRFs. Three soil-filled trays of dimensions that satisfied the official baseball rules were fixed onto 3 force platforms. Eight collegiate pitchers wearing baseball shoes with metal cleats were asked to throw 5 fastballs with maximum effort from the mound toward a catcher.

Association between 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and left atrial diameter in pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients .

Objective: To investigate the correlation between serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) levels and left atrial diameter (LAD) using echocardiography in pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Subjects And Methods: From an initial population of 487 patients (109 met the exclusion criteria), a total of 378 patients with CKD stage 3a - 5 who had not undergone dialysis or kidney transplantation were included in the study. The relationship between serum 1,25D levels and LAD was examined.

Light and temperature affect state transitions through changes in the plastoquinone (PQ) redox state in photosynthetic organisms. We demonstrated that light and/or heat treatment induced preferential photosystem (PS) I excitation by binding light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) proteins. The photosystem of wheat was in state 1 after dark overnight treatment, wherein PQ was oxidized and most of LHCII was not bound to PSI.

Successful Treatment of Peritoneal Dialysis-related Peritonitis due to Mycobacterium iranicum.

A 68-year-old man on peritoneal dialysis (PD) was hospitalized with the clinical picture of peritonitis. The patient was diagnosed with peritonitis caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) according to positive Ziehl-Neelsen staining and negative Mycobacterium tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction results. Oral levofloxacin and clarithromycin, and later intraperitoneal imipenem were started.

Cell therapy and regenerative medicine technologies require strict cell manufacturing procedures to be defined and addressed. Maintenance of the aseptic environment is critical to preclude extrinsic contamination risks, similar to conventional pharmaceutical manufacturing. However, intrinsic contamination risks exist in all cell manufacturing processes owing to the use of cells as the raw materials that cannot be sterilized, thus giving rise to the primary and secondary risks of cell contamination and cross-contamination, respectively.

Toll-like receptor 1 variation increases the risk of transplant-related mortality in hematologic malignancies.

Toll-like receptor 1 (TLR1) genetic variant (rs5743551, -7202A>G) has been reported to be associated with susceptibility to various infectious diseases. We retrospectively examined the impact of TLR1 variation on transplant outcomes in a cohort of 320 patients who underwent unrelated HLA-matched bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for hematologic malignancies. A multivariate analysis showed that the G/G genotype in the recipients and the donors was associated with a significantly lower 3-year transplant-related mortality (TRM).

α-Solanine and α-chaconine, steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) found in potato (Solanum tuberosum), are among the best-known secondary metabolites in food crops. At low concentrations in potato tubers, SGAs are distasteful; however, at high concentrations, SGAs are harmful to humans and animals. Here, we show that POTATO GLYCOALKALOID BIOSYNTHESIS1 (PGA1) and PGA2, two genes that encode cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP72A208 and CYP72A188), are involved in the SGA biosynthetic pathway, respectively.

Aims/introduction: The involvement of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) on inflammation was explored in atherosclerosis and adipose tissue. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease, and is considered one of the diabetic complications. In the present study, to examine the effect of GIP on periodontitis, we induced experimental periodontitis in glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor-knockout mice (GIPRKO).

[Effect of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB), Irbesartan, on urinary markers in hypertensive patients].

Purpose: We examined the effect of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB), irbesartan (Irb), on urinary markers in hypertensive patients.

Subjects And Methods: We evaluated 87 patients in a 12-month prospective study: Group 1) 33 patients who were newly administered Irb (100 mg); Group 2) 33 patients who were switched to Irb ; and Group 3) 21 patients who did not undergo change to pre-existing Irb administration. Height, weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, clinical parameters, urine protein : creatinine ratio (UPC), and urinary markers (liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase, α1-microglobulin, and β2-microglobulin) were measured at the baseline and at 12, 24, and 48 weeks.

Background: The approach of using transgenic rodent malaria parasites to assess the immune system's response to antigenic targets from a human malaria parasite has been shown to be useful for preclinical evaluation of new vaccine formulations. The transgenic Plasmodium berghei parasite line [PvCSP(VK210)/Pb] generated previously expresses the full-length circumsporozoite protein (CSP) VK210 from Plasmodium vivax. The transgenic parasite expresses one of the two most common alleles of CSP, defined by nine amino acids at the central repeat region of this protein.

The variations of the middle colic vein tributaries: depiction by three-dimensional CT angiography.

Objective: Laparoscopic transverse colectomy is challenging owing to technical difficulties in identifying an adequate dissection plane, ligating and dissecting lymph nodes around the middle colic vessels. One of the reasons for the technical difficulties is the complex relationship between the middle colic vein (MCV) and its tributary. So, defining the venous anatomy around the MCV before laparoscopic surgery seems important to avoid massive bleeding.

[Total Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Using the Right Gastroepiploic Artery: Report of a Case].

An 82-year-old man, who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG) with the right gastroepiploic artery( RGEA) 13 years previously, suffered with abdominal pain after meal and tarry stools, and was diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer. Gastroscopy revealed an advanced Borrmann type 4 cancer at the lesser curvature of the gastric body to the pyloric ring. The gastrogram showed poor extension and stenosis at the same part.

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma derived from a maxillary cyst: A case report and literature review.

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare malignant central jaw tumor derived from odontogenic epithelial remnants. PIOSCC predominantly affects the mandible, although both jawbones may be involved. This case report describes a PIOSCC type 2 of the maxilla in a 37-year-old man, treated by partial maxillectomy.
