The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently increased payment for evaluation and management (E/M) visits, but did not apply these updates to post-operative global period visits. We investigated the resulting Medicare fee-for-service revenue loss for otolaryngologists. Using publicly available Medicare spending/utilization data, we estimated how much additional payment otolaryngologists would have received in 2023 if CMS had reimbursed global period visits at the same rates as other E/M visits.

: African Americans (AAs) carry the largest burden for almost every type of cancer in the US and are also more likely to die from cancer. Approximately 10% of cancers can be explained by a hereditary factor and detected earlier. Many AAs, however, have inequitable access to hereditary cancer risk assessment (HCRA) tools and information, further exacerbating disparities in cancer rates.

Objective: Creating an intracortical brain-computer interface (iBCI) capable of seamless transitions between tasks and contexts would greatly enhance user experience. However, the nonlinearity in neural activity presents challenges to computing a global iBCI decoder. We aimed to develop a method that differs from a globally optimized decoder to address this issue.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex evokes tactile sensations whose properties can be systematically manipulated by varying stimulation parameters. However, ICMS currently provides an imperfect sense of touch, limiting manual dexterity and tactile experience. Leveraging our understanding of how tactile features are encoded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), we sought to inform individuals with paralysis about local geometry and apparent motion of objects on their skin.

Objective: Many people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience fatigue, pain and faecal incontinence that some feel are inadequately addressed. It is unknown how many have potentially reversible medical issues underlying these symptoms.

Methods: We conducted a study testing the feasibility of a patient-reported symptom checklist and nurse-administered management algorithm ('Optimise') to manage common medical causes of IBD-related fatigue, pain and faecal incontinence.

This paper presents a novel end-to-end architecture based on edge detection for autonomous driving. The architecture has been designed to bridge the domain gap between synthetic and real-world images for end-to-end autonomous driving applications and includes custom edge detection layers before the Efficient Net convolutional module. To train the architecture, RGB and depth images were used together with inertial data as inputs to predict the driving speed and steering wheel angle.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), caused by the highly variable PRRS virus (PRRSV), presents a significant challenge to the swine industry due to its pathogenic and economic burden. The virus evades host immune responses, particularly interferon (IFN) signaling, through various viral mechanisms. Traditional vaccines have shown variable efficacy in the field, prompting the exploration of novel vaccination strategies.

Unlabelled: The tonsils have been identified as a site of replication for Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus, human papillomavirus, and other respiratory viruses. Human tonsil epithelial cells (HTECs) are a heterogeneous group of actively differentiating cells. Here, we investigated the cellular features and susceptibility of differentiated HTECs to specific influenza viruses, including expression of avian-type and mammalian-type sialic acid (SA) receptors, viral replication dynamics, and the associated cytokine secretion profiles.

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

Article Synopsis
  • Variance in optical mesoscopic probes limits applications, especially as smaller probes show greater relative variance.
  • Specific viral protein cages, like the murine polyoma virus, can assemble efficiently and accurately, minimizing statistical fluctuations due to quality control.
  • An approach leveraging this assembly results in multichromophore particles that produce brighter, more consistent fluorescence than existing fluorescent nanosphere probes, validated by mass spectrometry and fluorescence microscopy.

Browsers are animals that consume significant proportions of leaves, twigs, and bark from woody plants. These species have evolved morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to subsist on a specialized diet. In zoos and other managed care facilities, the provision of browse in appropriate amounts helps promote positive animal welfare.

Tools can extend the sense of touch beyond the body, allowing the user to extract sensory information about distal objects in their environment. Though research on this topic has trickled in over the last few decades, little is known about the neurocomputational mechanisms of extended touch. In 2016, along with our late collaborator Vincent Hayward, we began a series of studies that attempted to fill this gap.

Tactile feedback from brain-controlled bionic hands can be partially restored via intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex. In ICMS, the location of percepts depends on the electrode's location and the percept intensity depends on the stimulation frequency and amplitude. Sensors on a bionic hand can thus be linked to somatotopically appropriate electrodes, and the contact force of each sensor can be used to determine the amplitude of a stimulus.

Article Synopsis
  • Proprioception, a sense crucial for movement control, remains underexplored, particularly in how limb position is mapped in the brain's somatosensory cortex.
  • The researchers developed a topographic variational autoencoder (topo-VAE) that, while not based on actual neural data, successfully mimics key aspects of proprioception observed in monkey movement studies.
  • Their model predicts a specific geometry for how neurons encode movement across the cortex and suggests that few neurons focus on single joints, offering insights into sensory feedback applications in brain-computer interfaces and robotics.

Evidence shows that gorgonians are more resistant to ocean acidification and rising temperatures than hard corals and are vital to reef health and the reestablishment of disrupted coral reef communities. Gorgonian coral's resilience and its diversity of morphology and environment make it well-suited as a model organism for bioinspired design applied to particle capture. We focus on flow near the polyps, using an updated form of the immersed boundary method to model the fluid-structure interaction of the flexible polyps and the surrounding ocean water.
